    Mark, UPDATE -- After my last post to you a short time ago, from the Internet I am learning that this engine coolant issue is somewhat common with Z3's. From what I am gathering, I may have to have the water pump replaced. Not sure yet.

    • @MomentofZed
      @MomentofZed  2 года назад

      Again, sorry it took me so long to see this- must have missed it on my trips. How about the sensor that kicks the fan on? Might be a start prior to the pump. But if your pump is original, might be smart to do it anyways.

      @@MomentofZed Good morning. Well, I have a new observation on this coolant issue, which has taken me by surprise. Apparently other Z3 owners have experienced the same issue. I have discovered that the coolant expansion tank on the driver side of the radiator has a fit problem with its cap. The cap has a challenging time threading on securely, which can leave a gap, which is not good. The cap can be tightened down and then immediately pop loose. The cap does not thread on the tank properly. So I try several times to get it to seal. So, I guess I will have the tank replaced, being sure it comes with a cap that I can check out before installation. I already tried a new cap, but it also did not work any better.

      @@walterreil4001 yes that is common. Might as well replace now.

    Hello again from California. This time I have an engine operation observation / question for your experience and understanding. Maybe this has been an unexpected learning lesson on how the engine works. A week ago I was driving my '97 1.9 (49k miles) and when I got home and parked, I realized that the coolant tank was bubbling / venting. So, in the past couple days I took it to my BMW service shop, they tested the system and determined that the issue was apparently the thermostat. All other possible causes were ruled out. So, today they replaced the thermostat. I then drove it for about 20 minutes around city streets and on the freeway with no problem. It was doing fine, with the engine temp right at mid-point, which is where it is normally during driving. Then, when I got home and parked, I let it idle for about 10 minutes. Shortly thereafter, the temp gauge began to increase in segments, finally stopping at between 3/4 and the start of the red zone. The coolant tank was bubbling and it was venting onto the driveway. Then the electronic fan kicked on and the temperature cooled down to normal half-way point. The fan then shut down. I continued to let it idle and the same thing happened again, with the temperature increasing back to between the 3/4 point and the red zone, then the fan started and the temp decreased to the half-way point. That is where I ended my test. Question: Does your Z do the same thing? Do you know if this is considered normal? It makes me wonder if maybe the electronic fan is not starting soon enough while idling. Any thoughts? Thanks, Mark.

      Walter- sorry had to dig into the channel to find your post, not sure how I missed it. This does not happen to mine and the fan kicks on much earlier. Coolant issues are common on the Z. The plastic waterpump impeller is a concern as well as the plastic coolant reservoir. My understanding is the impeller issue is a catastrophic failure, i.e. you'll know if it comes apart. The reservoir should be obvious if it fails.

    I just took my BMW Z3 out on a spirited drive after replacing the crankshaft and camshaft sensors. Holy cow, she feels smoother at 110 than she did at 65 before.
    If any of y’all get misfire codes in more than one cylinder, definitely check out the camshaft/crankshaft sensors. I’ve had my 1.9L Z3 for about six years now and the little devil is still a joy.
    Just have to recharge the AC tomorrow 🥵

    Mark, UPDATE #2 - Another possible culprit is the engine "fan clutch" not engaging as it should, driving the fan, and may need to be replaced.

    Many thanks for another informative video. The broken fog light housing clips look like a real pain. It's always frustrating when these plastic parts finally break (after ONLY 20+ years young!!!!). Your video touches on another interesting and sometimes heated subject to cover --- what bulbs can / should be used in the various exterior light fittings --- especially headlights, fog lights, tail lights, etc. -- how to get the brightest, then what about LED vs Halogen, etc. Also, I am curious, how do you detail your wheels, i.e. what cleaner you use and do you apply some kind of protectant to the wheels? Well done on your fog light repair --- sloppy is just fine, hopefully adding more strength. And thanks for recommended glue.

    That's a nice informative video about cracked plastic pieces. BTW if you were to change the bulbs, I'd recommend switching to LED's as they last longer and are brighter for night driving. How is your trunk light working?

    Mark, UPDATE #3 - Well, we shall see. After having the thermostat replaced today, I did end up adding more water to the coolant system since it did begin to overheat as the car sat idling for about 10 minutes. So, I waiting until this evening to go for another test drive. Apparent success --- must have needed to be fully filled with coolant water to be successful. My 30 minute drive just now went just fine, traveling between 35 and 65. The temperature stayed at the desired half-way mark. When I got home after a couple minutes of idling I shut it down. No apparent overheating. I checked the engine area and did not hear any bubbling or see any coolant dripping from the tank. So, for right now all looks as it should. Now to await a more robust hour or two drive to see how it goes. One correction to UPDATE #2 -- I was wrong about the "fan clutch". My Z does not have a mechanical fan connected to the engine, only the electronic fan behind the radiator. I am still wondering if the temperature set-point for the electronic fan is set properly, or should be at a lower "hot" coolant temperature to kick in as soon as the temperature starts jumping above the normal half-way mark. I will have to think on that and see what I might do. I have read that someone who had the same problem decided to rewire the electronic fan to have a manual On/Off switch on the dash --- that sounds very intriguing. One other possible suspect I was thinking about is the water pump -- but for now will just run as-is to see how it performs going forward. Apparently some folks replaced their water pump as some Z's water pumps had a plastic impeller that caused problems, so they replaced it with a pump having a metal impeller. That's all for this situation for now. Sorry for bothering you.
