This is probably one of the best renditions of this piece in existence, and Ruth Laredo's performances of all the Scriabin sonatas are also amongst the best. She is far more faithful to the scores than an exaggerator such as Horowitz, for example, and she has a good feel for the music, too - so I am puzzled that she is so seldom mentioned whenever people debate the best performances of Scriabin's piano music.

I've been a huge Scriabin fan for decades and have really only just discovered this version of Vers la flamme. I'm thinking that Laredo is often overlooked because her Scriabin recordings were issued on a specialty label (Connoisseur) rather than on one of the majors such as DG (Szidon) or London (Ashkenazy). Also, the Laredo recordings are among the oldest of the cycle, and there have been so many of them produced over the years. But I actually do consider this version of Vers la flamme to be the best of the readily accessible recordings. Beautifully expressive, yet controlled in articulation and in dynamics. (And I don't like the Horowitz version(s) either.)

    This interpretation is a gem.

Playing this at a silent midnight time is a transcendental experience. Trust me, I bet you won't regret it.

Coming back here (my "first" video) 2 years later after having performed my first Scriabin recital... this might still be my favorite Vers la flamme on the planet. It's like holding a burning piece of paper in your hand until you're forced to drop it. (Laul's recording is a close second, similar in conception and with much better sonics, but this one throws all caution to the wind and is relentlessly exciting even on repeated listening.)
