I'm a 22 year old Kiwi, yet I somehow feel homesick for a culture I have never experienced. Despite all the so-called "progress" we've had and all the material wealth we've accumulated, I can't help feeling our world of today is a much poorer one.
I will learn this right away. It's not unlike African choral music. I love the sustained notes on Eflat and Aflat, and the rhythm. Never heard this before. 👌🙏
This is amazing Alan Lomax has done sooo much for the history of music, Where would we be if it was not for his dedication to documenting such amazing music?
Yep, my thoughts exactly. Blues, shapenote, folk, all kids of stuff that might have vanished if not for him, or at least worked out differently. If the living tradition of Sacred Harp had died out I think the world would be an immeasurably poorer place for it. I can hardly imagine the scope of the loss. In my mind it would be anyway. There would be choirs that would try to sing the stuff, but they'd do it like choirs do it even now, with an example of the real stuff to listen to, they still clean it up and make it soft-edged and smooth, and professional sounding, and it sounds nothing like Sacred Harp. BTW, I like your avatar. Very sweet.
And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. -Jeremiah 29:13 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. -John 3:16 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out. -Acts 3:19 :) :)
And let this feeble body fail, And let it faint or die; My soul shall quit this mournful vale, And soar to worlds on high, And I'll sing hallelujah, And you'll sing hallelujah, And we'll all sing hallelujah, When we arrive at home. Give joy or grief, give ease or pain, Take life or friend away, But let me find them all again, In that eternal day. And I'll sing hallelujah, And you'll sing hallelujah, And we'll all sing hallelujah, When we arrive at home. And I'll sing hallelujah, And you'll sing hallelujah, And we'll all sing hallelujah, When we arrive at home.
I love this. I went to the Church of Christ in childhood and have never forgotten the delights of singing a cappella, the only thing about church that ever made me feel a true sense of spiritual exaltation. This kind of music is a well kept secret, what I want to know is just how many people have never yet enjoyed hearing it and don't know what they're missing!
Heresy you boast that baptism can save you but it's the blood. A slap in the face to christ. He did it all if it's anything other than the blood it's heresy

My how times have changed. I'm from an hour away from this place, in west Georgia, born 1987 and my great-grandmother grew up Sacred Harp singing in east Alabama. Apart from the singing, I note the low or absent incidence of obesity, so unlike today, they're mostly older but all skinny. Lucy Heidorn must be about 50 but look at her arms. And no doubt none of these people ever darkened the door way of a gym even once. That was most definitely not a thing in 1982 rural Georgia. I guess it's what we eat. I also note their attention spans. Everybody immediately turns to the page when she says it. No one's texting or checking their hair or fiddling in pocket or purse. Must've been nice! But yeah A/C would be great. We do have that on them!
I grew up in the primitive Baptist Church I just lost one of one of my closest cousins and I am not taking it well. Listening to sacred hearp. Really helps me. I know that God is with me and God is with her.
I’m not a Christian but I’m a musician and love this music - there is such beauty in simplicity. Music is so powerful and transcends time, place, and all belief systems. The sense of community and closeness in these worshipers feels like a lost commodity. Belief is a deeply ingrained part of the human experience and I love seeing people gather in this way.
What amazes me is that if you go to sings in New England (at least), more than half of the people are under 30, and most of the rest are under 60. I just hope they all stick with it (and I've seen a great number of familair faces over the last 4-5 years).
@@annettemarshall4895 I've seen the movie many times. Was wondering which songs from the soundtrack you meant. Maybe "Down in the River to Pray" has a similar feel.
Why not do it when you're young? Anyone can do it. Just show up at the next sing. People will find a place for you to sleep, if need be, and food to eat, directions, a ride is likely. Fasola.com lists all the conventions out there.

Blood recognize blood.
It's because you're a fascist. All fascists are sad losers.
This is quite possibly one of the best things I have ever heard.
You should come to a Sacred Harp sing! You can't even imagine how good it sounds in person.

I liken it to hollerin' out for the Lord! It moves me deeply. Remember this when life gets you down. Start singing strong & loud & true.

Global IQ actually dropped 5 points compared to vicforian times, we are experiencing disgenics
"And let this feeble body fail..." .. Let come what may, Almighty God reigns.
Wow! This is absolutely beautiful! I am so moved. What a treasure this snapshot of the past is
Thank you, Alan Lomax.
Indeed !

Recalling our shape-note group from Centenary United Methodist Church...that eternal circle. Blessings, Pastor Ken snd Pastor Diane. #GoodTrouble
so special, once again.
something very deep and spiritual about this music. Wish there was a group where I live that I could join!
Chris Carney check fasola.org to see if there is a group near you!
Singing this tonight in central Vermont where some of this music was written
Also, any civil war reenactment should have type of singing in it somewhere
Start one!
Maybe you can make one :D
Ancient music, sung as it undoubtedly was in the 1700s and earlier, captured on film.

Wow, must have been hot in that room! I'll sing Hallelujah when they fix the AC! :) Seriously, love this hymn with all my heart! It never gets old!
the melody sounds almost like an irish folk tune
It might well be. A number of these tunes are actually re-purposed folk tunes.
Coen Brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou pays this stuff considerable attention and affection.
Can you elaborate?
@@custerranch suggest upi view the film - set in the south in the 1930s. There's a lot of this kind of group singing in it.

It was complete satire. The Cohen Brothers were completely making fun of the people in that time period.
How are they able to sing those shaped notes so skillfully?
I live in Enterprise, Alabama, and Dewey Williams is my Uncle that sing the numbers of the song
very cool. I wanna do that when im old

People of America.....Why isn't this shape note simple system being taught in public school?
Breathtaking. This pagan is in love. Our culture is so amazing.
I always hated acapella, like Pentatonix and the type ya know,...
But Sacred Harp is really magical.
What language are they singing in?
English lol
Wrong they are singing in Scottish.
The first time through, they are singing the names of the notes: Fa, Sol, La, etc.
Then they sing two verses of the song in English.
Not Scottish.
They start out by singing shaped notes, and then they do the song in its English lyrics....
M
They don't seem to be enjoying it quite as much as other groups I've seen.
We're losing this. Forgive and be Forgiven. Return to the Father. Don't for get where you come from. Ever.
