I've spent a week with a late Turbo R recently. I had to throw away all my car experience, cos everything is different, especially the feel of the brake pedal. First half hour I hated the car, then I started to get used to it and then it became a love affair. I drove from the west of The Netherlands to mid Germany and back, and it was great. It just feels good to drive low speeds, on the unlimited German autobahn 130-140kph was just nice. And the party trick: acceleration from 50-80 kph to warp speed.
My home town is Crewe, which is, of course, where all Bentleys were and still are built. It was also where Rolls Royces were built until BMW bought it and moved production to the south of England. At one time, almost everyone in Crewe had family members who worked in the factory, many of whom started there as apprentices at 15/16 and worked there until they retired. Crewe is not the most exciting place to live but at least we can be proud of Bentley, which thankfully is still producing magnificent cars under German ownership.
When i had my 2 Rolls Royces 😊😊😊i just used them 4 times a week to go to the golf ⛳ club in. The problem is you can't leave them in certain places 😢 but just go go out and have a pose ❤😊❤😊❤😊 around in they are absolutely majestic 🎉😊
Lighter blue metallic and cream interior is just such a stunning combination! And as someone who loves bot German and English cars, design and feel of exclusivity will always be won by England. And honestly, if looked after, the engineering is pretty good as well. Just wafted along in my 1996 Daimler today, absolutely love that car. But my BMW corners like it’s on rails and my many Merc’s are somewhere in between. The more modern Merc’s are a bit soulless in my opinion, so I fully understand your sentiment. I was also out for a very short drive in my 560SEC, and that has soul!
An enjoyable video.... Thanks! I drove a number of V12 Jaguars for many, many, years as daily drivers.... XJ saloons and XJSs, including a 6 litre. Fuel consumption was always over 20 mpg and was accepable given the pleasure of driving and maintaining these cars myself. Never had any issues aside from normal maintenance, and they were more than cost effective to run. The point is, get the car you fancy and enjoy, and set against rhe ridiculous cost of any new car, it really makes sense. I sold on all of my cars at no or minimal loss, making a profit on some, and therefore had no depreciation to swallow. I was 'quids in' in every way. I considered a Rolls, but always preferred the driveabilty and looks of the Jaguars. If you fancy a particular 'classic, just do it!
Very nice Bentley! The key question is have you got a decent RR / Bentley specialist near you? I didn’t have one but have good Mercedes specialist so I bought a w126 instead. It’s been the best car I’ve ever owned.
This Bentley Mulsanne S for me is a beautiful car. This one has had some paint at some point but that is no bad thing. I think turbos can be a problem so this model is probably a better option. I wouldn't mind driving around in a living room but that might be down to my age (mid 60's) and if you enjoy driving why would you worry too much about fuel consumption? There is an argument for saying 'I have to be careful where I park' but you could say that about any modern car. There aren't many honest people about now sadly so waking your door in a supermarket is just part of modern motoring unless you have live cameras front and back to catch the toe rags! Great review (Lord!) Jack I will watch with interest for your final choice. 👍👍
Oh Jack, my word what a beautiful car, especially that interior. Great for wafting to the south of France! It sounds so silent inside as you are driving it! I currently own an Aston DB9 for Sundays and fundays but i was seriously considering a Continental GT as well, even watching the fun you had with yours i plumped for the Aston(which i adore by the way) but if i ever fancy a change id maybe get eithe a Conti GT or an Arnage red label in that fantastic crimson red that Bentley do! Great vid as usual!👍👏👏♥️🏴
I worked for RR Bentley in the road rest department at Crewe in this time. Build is fantastic. Just check the hydro pneumatic brakes and suspension before purchasing If you wan the car to handle better you have the wrong model It can be done easily. But not by a back yard tyre kicker.
Fuel costs in the UK would make me balk, but I'd spring for it in the US. Don't worry about the high miles: the worst thing you can do is let them sit, as you well know. Drive it always and sympathetically, keep up with fluid changes, and learn how to fix the hydraulics yourself. It will run forever, those 6¾ litre engines are so understressed.
The "social factor" is something to think about. Good point ! For situations requiring a lower profile maybe it's an idea to have also an old Fiat Panda (also for bad weather days) ?
I did a valuation on one of these, as well as a 1976 Silver shadow and a 1995 928GTS prosche. All with less than 100,000km one owner, full log book service historys based on time not klms. The Bentley still had its matching umbrella. Marvelous cars. The merc is like a toyota camry. Dull. So! Id go for it
I am 5 years into a Mercedes CL500 ownership and agree with all the points you mention. However, I do enjoy driving the CL and find myself doing more miles than anticipated so I had to up the annual mileage on the classic car policy. Maybe it's because I am in my 60's now, but for the money the CL is a very fine motor car.
Bentleys are cool but try another Jag, namely an X350/X358 this time. Fantastic cars, cheaper than the previous X308 to run. I'm wafting around in a 2004 VDP as my DD here in North Carolina doing 140 mile round trips in supreme comfort and 25+ mpg to a US gallon!😁
I have a 2003 100k CL600 and a 2000 150K Bentley Arnarge Red Label. I'll keep both. The CL V12 twin turbo glides around, eating miles brilliantly. The Bentley, well, genuinely consumes the miles, keeps the outside world at bay. That's until you spool up the turbo, it's becomes a cruise missile with presence and poise. If one had to go, it would be the CL. Nothing wrong with it at all, it's just not got the overall dynamic approach of the Bentley..
Good cars, in 97 I was involved in buying and selling a 90 one, a budget Bentley at the time, lovely car stacked up well against a newer Jaguar for the same money.
Last year I drove a Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. This year I drove a Bentley Mulsanne. It is fair to say that I loved them both. There is something about the Rolls-Royce way (or, at least, the 1980s Rolls-Royce way) that is so unlike any other car as to give them a unique appeal. I've driven a variety of luxury barges from BMW, Jaguar, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and even Range Rover. They were all glorious, but none quite had what the Bentley and R-R had; the quality of the fixtures and fittings, the lightness and smoothness of the controls, the sense that all is right with the world.
Ah, Jack... Go ahead, make the swap...but first you should go to the bank and arrange to refinance your house. Because you'll NEED all that money when you start in on the Bentley. Bentleys and Rolls are the surest sign in the world that you have more money than sense, unless we are talking about OLD ones, and even those will break you when stuff starts to break...it just takes longer. I bought/sold some of these things when I was in the trade, and every single buyer later admitted that he/she (yes, even a few women succumbed) was stunned when it came to the cost of maintenance and repairs. Even simple parts like wheel covers and steel wheels (for earlier cars) were astonishingly expensive ($1400 for a set of wheel covers, in the mid-1980s). You don't want to know about the cost of refurbishing the suspension, and there is the nightmare of repairing vacuum leaks caused by the hard plastic lines that crack and break, and that lovely little knob that controls the HVAC can go bad and cost a scarey amount to replace. But your banker will look upon you in a different light - you're a Bentley Boy, and we all know how rich they are!

How many have you actually owned on a long term basis?
3, two Rolls and 1 Bentley Mulsanne. I kept the Bentley for almost 5 years and about 30k miles. I owned a dealership at the time with a splendid shop, and my guys kept the car running as it should. Spares prices were astonishing even bought wholesale, and the cars are quite tricky to service. Paying retail for maintenance and repairs would be DEAR!!
@@1968spikey I spent over 30 years in the motor trade, all of them dealing in top-shelf marques. And I have constantly warned potential buyers, "There ain't NO cheap exotics or premium European cars". The low purchase price soon disappears under a tsunami of repair/maintenance bills. Remember, when you sidle up to the parts counter at a Rolls dealer, the new ones cost over $450K...and the spares for your old one are priced accordingly. Yes, there are used parts and a few aftermarket ones (many of dubious quality), but then you'll have to find a shop that will install them and warranty the work. Better to buy a nice, clean LS-series Lexus and not have to re-mortgage your house...unless you really LIKE looking like a millionaire, but with a pauper's bank account!
the executive express of many a past entertainer! the term "driving your living room down the road" is exactly the term I used back in 1982 as a long haired spotty apprentice when I first drove a Silver Shadow.
Well, there is one fly in the ointment (besides the bankrupt inducing fuel/maintenance costs), and that is lack of any modern assist and safety features. I don't care much about automatic braking and line keeping assist, but with a car of this size and stature, I bet you would agree that parking camera and sensors would come handy. Also, lack of adaptive cruise control this days makes it a no-go for me. Sorry, Jevees, but non-adaptive cruise control just would not do...
A beautiful car indeed. Once sorted, and properly maintained, one of these is a terrific daily driver. The fuel economy is probably not bad on the motorway. The engine is never working. I had an 89 Mercury Grand Marquis with a 5.8 litre V8 fitted with a 2bbl variable venturi carburetor. On the open road it would do a solid 40 miles to the gallon thanks to torque and gearing. I would be hard pressed to pass up the Bentley you were driving. That colour is amazing.
Jack - loved this, got your temptation, got the Mercedes thing. Brilliant, never had a go of a Turbo R in my motor trade (brief) experience but personally I spend too long looking at them for sale on line! and would want one in anything other than 'Scrap Dealer Red' but give me Madagascar Purple!
Great video but I have had 3 Turbo RL's in the last 15 years & missing the Turbo is exactly why I have never owned a Mulsanne S . Takes all the fun away .😉 You also have the worlds fastest picnic tables 😃 !Also on the highway mine does 19 MPG @ 70 MPH. No Turbo related issues either even @ 175000 Kilometers on my current 1989.It's just a weekend special occasion car for me which it what I suggest owner's should use it for.
From a single exhaust thats a lovely sound. Aston Martin, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Bristol et all have been in the parts bins of other manufacturers for years. So your wood, leather and other things are exquisite but your knobs and switches amy come from another builder :-)
My friend bought a 1989 Silver Spirit with 64k miles and full history. A few weeks later it needed a radiator recore, new thermostat, and coolant. A month or so later it needed two shocks. It cost him an absolute fortune, I believe the thermostat alone was well over £100!!! Then he had some paintwork rectified which means the car now owes him much more than it's worth. He advertised it for a few weeks without a single sniff so he threw a cover over it, parked it in his lockup and said "It can stay there til it rots away." They're a very cheap car now Jack, I watched a lovely Shadow Series 2 go through an auction which struggled to reach a touch over over 4k. Please don't pay too much for one or like my friend (and my brother with his 1992 Brooklands) you will regret it. Lovely cars but these days pretty much worthless.
If, in these hard times, one wants to be despised, then get hold of one. The "snob" factor is unbeatable, hahaha. Jack is right, this car should not be parked in certain rougher areas. Also, be prepared to receive NOTHING at a discount, because everyone will assume your net worth to be over ten million pounds.
In my humble opinion, since you are in the UK, with numerous little or big garages specialized in British cars and with the help of an owners club, you could have this Bentley and enjoy it to the fullest. Hope she is a solid and looked after example though...
Iain Tyrrell said recently, regarding his Merc R230 SL500 (2003), although bought for a few thousand quid, you are still liable for the maintenance on an £80,000 car. It could seriously damage your pocket.
Friend of mine owned a 2001 Merc 500, V8 wagon. He kept telling my that at 5000 €, the car was a steal. The only drawback was that he spent over 12000 € on maintenance over the three years he had it ! He finally got rid of it because of an unsolved electrical problem, engine would stop sometimes at low idle, nobody could fix it... But still the only thing he remembers was how cheap he got it for!
Better looking but they don't drive as well ( I have an outstanding one) which is important if you intend using it. The Bentley will also be fuel injected.
My choice would be a w126 - a 500SE or SEC. More sence of occasion than the newer ones. I used to daily a 500SE and they're not too bad. 24mpg on motorway and 11-19 around town, depending on your right foot.
Daily driver with a nice big engine, classy styling, loads of leather and wood, but not as obnoxious as a large Bentley, have you looked into the likes of series III XJ12? Would also be in the budget range
Even with a Range Rover I find myself having to drive round and round looking for a big enough and safe enough car parking spot so imagine finding a spot for this old girl that doesn't leave you worrying what the doors will be like when you return. It's even 575mm longer!
@@garychilds1130 I don't believe that such a car would be stolen, however it's likely to succumb to some deliberate damage - ie. 'keying' damage - if left unattended in some parts of the country.
@@georgebettiol8338 yes this is true some jealous people out there I'm living in Thailand for the last 25 years and believe it or not yes meny accident but not so much vandalism to cars but in Thailand a pickup truck is more prestigious than a Bentley 555
Beautiful car. Not so sure as a daily though. In my idealized line up, it would be daily; convertible sports car; ....then an older Rolls or Bentley for their wonderfully embracing sense of occasion.
That is a scary fuel consumption figure but then I don't really 'daily drive' anything so it would be a trip out into the country here and there, and the odd cross-country trip. I think I could reconcile myself to it on those terms :-)
The V16 was never put into one of these. It started in the Goldfish during the 1980's, and was only fitted into one of these once it was decided to trial it in the Arnage which was a development of the same chassis. That V16 was interesting, as it wasn't a simple V8 combination as you might expect, but was a V16 with an extra 4 cylinders grafted onto each end. If your can find a picture of the engine and zoom in, you'll see the welded on parts.
Thank you for a great review. You are up to Harry Metcalfe's standard. I daresay even better today. In fact, after his recent flogging of the Lotus Emira, I've switched to your channel instead.
I endorse many of your comments, having gone from a 1972 Silver Shadow to a 2010 Mercedes S550. The Benz is a far more modern and better driving car (as you'd expect) but will never have the presence, atmosphere or sense of occasion of a much older Rolls-Royce.
I'm only eight sconds into the vid, and I'm already going Oof. You haven't even said anything yet :) I'd always choose soul over practicality. My house, apartment really, is old. 1885, high ceiling with ornaments, bad insulation, not even central heating, leaded glass panes in the sliding doors. You know the thing, walking from one side to the other might make you seasick. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. It has its downsides in the winter, though. But a Bentley? The mileage is killing, if not maintenance. I had a Merc once. Good car, master of giving you that King of the Road feel, but a bit... bland. Nothing personal there, it didn't love me and I didn't love it. It remained an It. A Bentley would bankrupt me while I loved it. Toxic relationship.
To me there are driver cars and there are passenger cars. Most manufacturers are trying to more or less balance the two. You are bored with the Merc because it is a perfect passenger car, I think. What would make you happy is a car weighing about 2200 lbs with about 200 hp excellent gas mileage and a great suspension with wide low-profile tires. Throw in a real steering wheel with a mechanical linkage to the front wheels, not a round thing in front of you linked by wiring to an electric motor far, far away, and I think that would be your sort of set up. Bonus for us if the car needed lots of minor work that you could craft many videos around. We love your roll-up-the-shirt-sleeves problem solving.
No Contest Jack but thats just me, im a luxobarge lover! So yeah id go the Bentley every time, probably a better comparison would be with a 500 series sedan of similar vintage? But i found whilst an incredible car, very boring too! I think you need X350/358 Jag XJR if you qant a luxo that aint boring 🥱🤣 Disclaimer:This is just my personal opinion Cheers Jack 🇦🇺
Noone ever did interiors like the top luxury Brits of this era. Jags, Rollses, Bentleys, all unassailable in a way the Germans could never match. And didn't.
I think these look great but the sums wouldn't add up for me. This is a complex, late-80s car where even a modest bit of maintenance or repair could cost more than it's worth. This one looks to have a great interior but it sounds like a new exhaust is on the cards and that mis-matched paint would annoy me every time I looked at it. For just a week-end driver the mid-teens fuel consumption wouldn't be a major issue but these days the 0-60 in the mid-tens would certainly occasionally frustrate.

Sounds like the exhaust is blowing. That 4K straight away. 👍😂
I thought that also when he first drove it away! That or it's been massaged in its exhaust.
Sounds like a tank .
Sounds great!
The exhaust is fine. I'm guessing you don't have much experience of L Series V8 cars?
It sounds like an old Lincoln Continental. I'm shocked..
Those quad headlights look soo good..
Man, I want me a V16 Bentley 😍😍
Very nice Bentley! The key question is have you got a decent RR / Bentley specialist near you? I didn’t have one but have good Mercedes specialist so I bought a w126 instead. It’s been the best car I’ve ever owned.
That Continental at 1:44 is possibly the most elegant thing I've ever seen.
What a fantastic old bus 😊 They don't build them like that anymore. I just love the clean straight line design if these cars, she's ageing well 👍
Family friends had the one Australian delivered Silver Shadow LWB, stunning vehicle. One of a handful of divider cars made worldwide.
The paintwork on both sides is horrendous.
Just check the hydro pneumatic brakes and suspension before purchasing
If you wan the car to handle better you have the wrong model
It can be done easily.
I owned one of these from 2000 to 2007 as my weekend/ sunday car and absolutely loved it. Every time i got in it ,it felt like a special day…..
Rolls Boyce? 😁
@@UberLummox like that 😂
@@philboyce1582 👋😁
Agreed and such they make a lot of sense. Had my Bentley T1 for 15 years.
The "social factor" is something to think about. Good point ! For situations requiring a lower profile maybe it's an idea to have also an old Fiat Panda (also for bad weather days) ?
Great video. I usually don't like the dark wood but this looks really nice!
Owned one of those Mulsannes for many years. Best car ever!
Only sold it when I had to downsize.
Wish I'd kept it instead of the MBZ.
I was convinced when you closed the drivers door. Thwunk!
It's a very beautiful and competent barge, but still a barge.
But we don't all want a speed-boat....
@@BibTheBoulderTheOriginalOne but a barge? For fun?
And a bland, slab-sided barge too. If we could scale it down by 25%, it'd be a comfy but tedious and uninspiring Wolseley of some sort. 😕
The comment on anonimity is valuable insight.
I'm not convinced by the Bentley's styling and driving dynamics. I think a 1990s Daimler XJ Series, Lancia Kappa, or Lancia Thesis would be my pick.
Jaguar Xj series 3, the most perfect car to drive and look at, closely followed by the Xj x350
I think that answers your question 😂
@@rustyturner431 very true, and you've certainly silenced the poser of the question of how many you've owned... I'd add them to your collection too 😆
the executive express of many a past entertainer!
the term "driving your living room down the road" is exactly the term I used back in 1982 as a long haired spotty apprentice when I first drove a Silver Shadow.
Dam. You some how do videos on things I'm thinking of. Great work once again
When we were living in Hungary, I was going to buy a Bentley for the dump run, but decided on a 1998 Jag XJ8
Good review. Car is looking good, Rafe! 👍🏻
Great review Jack. A good way to start my day
Great video but I have had 3 Turbo RL's in the last 15 years & missing the Turbo is exactly why I have never owned a Mulsanne S . Takes all the fun away .😉
You also have the worlds fastest picnic tables 😃 !Also on the highway mine does 19 MPG @ 70 MPH.
Sooner or later you'll end up with a Jaguar X350 XJ...
...or maybe try an S-type or X-type (3 liter, 4x4, stationwagon).
Thanks Jack🙏🙏 , think you're more a Rover P5b Coupe, or Reliant Scimitar GT man! Endless hours tinkering there!
Cool car. Love anything that does not have a black interior....this one just looks like the late 70s in that department...happy days!!
It does have a ‘bit’ of an image doesn’t it!!! 🤣🤣🤣
In my humble opinion, since you are in the UK, with numerous little or big garages specialized in British cars and with the help of an owners club, you could have this Bentley and enjoy it to the fullest. Hope she is a solid and looked after example though...
@Jack, the bodies for these were produced by BL/Austin Rover at Cowley Oxford.
I’ve been eyeing up similar Bentley and Rolls on Facebook recently. Why not make a silly decision every now and then?
Thank you for this video. The Bentley would be my pick. It has history and charm!
The early pre-big bumper Silver Shadows were way better looking imo. Looks fun though. Good luck with your hunt!
Better looking but they don't drive as well ( I have an outstanding one) which is important if you intend using it. The Bentley will also be fuel injected.
@2:33 'The Shilver Shadow'. Channelling Corn Shonnery, unless I'm very much mistaken, Miss Punnymany.
You have to be careful that no one steal your range rover but nobody wants to steal a Bentley
@@garychilds1130 Exactly, it wouldn't be a very clever thief if they thought someone in Romania would want to buy a Bentley to break up for parts!
Huge 17 ft 4 long in old money!
That colour is wonderful, understated but not really common.
I absolutely agree… best color for this car in my mind…
Beautiful car. Not so sure as a daily though. In my idealized line up, it would be daily; convertible sports car; ....then an older Rolls or Bentley for their wonderfully embracing sense of occasion.
That is a scary fuel consumption figure but then I don't really 'daily drive' anything so it would be a trip out into the country here and there, and the odd cross-country trip. I think I could reconcile myself to it on those terms :-)
Everything is a matter of taste so one could not tell what is better !
Jack you need to stroke the grille saying 'Behhhntlehh'
The most intense emotions from my car You I get from the garage bills.
Ian Tyrrell has a video on Shadow/Cornice in which he speaks about suspension modifications to make them handle better.
That's a very stately looking machine - lovely👌
Thank you for a great review. You are up to Harry Metcalfe's standard. I daresay even better today. In fact, after his recent flogging of the Lotus Emira, I've switched to your channel instead.
The Bentley is more of a "me" car, than for you Jack - I can't help feeling that the end of your search is gonna be in "Maserati territory". Cheers!
I endorse many of your comments, having gone from a 1972 Silver Shadow to a 2010 Mercedes S550. The Benz is a far more modern and better driving car (as you'd expect) but will never have the presence, atmosphere or sense of occasion of a much older Rolls-Royce.
Given how wide cars are now, this old bus should fit a supermarket parking slot. Might overhang a bit but what practicality!
By todays standards they really aren't overly wide, about the same as a Jaguar XF.
I'm only eight sconds into the vid, and I'm already going Oof. You haven't even said anything yet :)
I'd always choose soul over practicality.
I prefer the painted grille to the chrome unit, but these are my favourite British cars.
Did the person who did the paint matching know the car is blue?
It’s lovely. Personally I’d go for an Arnage - but, if you’re not daunted by the maintenance costs, why not?
Go for the Turbo R, Jack. Live a bit. Nice cars👍
No Contest Jack but thats just me, im a luxobarge lover! So yeah id go the Bentley every time, probably a better comparison would be with a 500 series sedan of similar vintage? But i found whilst an incredible car, very boring too! I think you need X350/358 Jag XJR if you qant a luxo that aint boring 🥱🤣
Disclaimer:This is just my personal opinion Cheers Jack 🇦🇺
Noone ever did interiors like the top luxury Brits of this era. Jags, Rollses, Bentleys, all unassailable in a way the Germans could never match. And didn't.
2:17 - 2:27 I want one! for that sound alone! 😂
I know what you mean, I have had a Mercedes, it really bored me to tears🤔
My ex-wife was like a Mercedes. High initial cost, but in the long run just too boring and not worth the outlay.
I'm pretty sure you'll get a Bentley, you're definitely a British car afficionado.
I daily drive a 2 door Bentley... once you get caught up on the initial deferred maintenance it's not difficult to own.
bit of a gratuitous brick but I agree about the special interior. I have a Merc of the same era and it's a satisfying and relatively sensible machine.
Thinking aloud, how about that Rover, MG officially, 75 rwd with the Mustang engine? Perks of both brands, interesting car.
What Mercury do you own that's so great? I had a Grand Marquis and it was not so great.
