    Great advice! My experience with own-roots is exactly what Paul is saying - that spindly little own root looks like a full grown old rose in 4 years. I have one 4 year old climber that was one little cane when I got it. It's now 12-14 feet in either direction. They grow fast!

    Hi Paul, again, so happy I ran into your channel. I bought some 1 gallon David Austin own root roses and planted them on ground 6 months ago. They have not grown much at all. I watered them everyday and fish fertilized them a couple of times. The soil is amended with compost. Some have black spots and so I sprayed them with neem oil. I m in zone 8 where it constantly rains. I’ve been patiently waiting for them to grow but after watching this video I feel like my situation is an unusual and so wanted to reach out to get some insights.

      I would have expected some growth by now. As it's winter now they are dormant. I would contact Austin so you are on the record and then expect a growth spurt in spring. If you don't check back with them.

      @ thank you Paul. I did not get them from David Austin. They are from the “2x2 feet hole” people. If you can guess who I’m referring to 😀. I followed their instructions to the T. Had to hire folks to do all the digging( wish I knew about you sooner). Come spring I’ll know if all the labor, material and plants cost all are down the drain or if they actually survive. 🤞

    You can certainly add water before or as you are planting. I've found because the mix I just put back in is loose and I'm not stamping it down the water gets through it just fine.

    I put some freebie rose cuttings with small leaves in the ground at less than a foot apart coz I wanted a patch like you show. Deer got em a few times so they are still small and now I'm happy they are coz it looks like I'll have to move a few out of the mosh. I will keep those in a larger pot and give them some juice for a year :)

      @@Rena0Dawn Most likely they will ship in early spring. I assume it's a smaller pot and you want to put it in a one gallon pot to grow it to some size before you plant it in the ground? Assuming that's the case likely watering every other day will take care of it as long as the soil drains well. Roses don't like wet feet so don't be afraid to let the soil dry out a bit between watering.

    • @Paulzimmermanroses
      @Paulzimmermanroses  6 лет назад

      You will want a rose that is pretty disease resistant for that climate. I would ask around to see if there are any other rose growers in your area that might be able to give advice on what roses do well in that kind of climate.

    • @Paulzimmermanroses
      @Paulzimmermanroses  6 лет назад

    I am planting five Lady Emma Hamiltons in pots tomorrow. Should I add some root stimulator to the water? I live in northern Indiana. It's July 3rd now, so when should I transplant the pots to the ground? Should I put some cypress mulch in the pot or leave it uncovered?

    • @Paulzimmermanroses
      @Paulzimmermanroses  5 лет назад

      You can certainly add root stimulator to the water. It can only help. If you plant them in pots now I'd put them in the ground in early September so they have time to get established before winter. Mulch is always a good idea. Great choice of rose by the way!

    Why do people buy bare root roses when grafted ones are better?

    • @jjstatz29
      @jjstatz29 10 лет назад +4

      Grafted isn't necessarily better. Grafted puts on more of a show in the short term, but own root is better suited to colder climates and for the long run. Generally speaking too you can avoid graft born diseases and completely avoid die back that results in the undesirable looking graft taking over.
