why is it useful to determine if an organism produces indole?

Because as it is mentioned in this video this test allows us to identify Gram-negative bacilli! Also the Methyl red and the Voges proskauer tests are doing the same thing. They are tests to defferentiate Gram-negative bacillus bacteria!
