  • We introduced this 103 year old phonograph a few weeks ago. After some extensive research (and finally finding time to get to it) Chris is ready to embark on the repair journey.
In this video Chris will pull the motor and have a preliminary look at it to see if he can diagnose the issue at hand.
This is a Victor Victrola VV-XI from 1913. Its serial number is 57627. It plays 78 rpm records. It operates by cranking a spring and releasing a brake. The sound is reproduced with a steel needle and a sound box which is attached to the horn via the tonearm. The needles must be changed with every record! There are no electronics in this piece.
It currently does not crank. We believe it's due to a broken spring based on symptoms. The spring can be replaced however it is dangerous and care must be taken when doing so. We will have more videos up on this repair as we work on it.
If you have any suggestions for videos on this channel, please feel free to leave them in the comments below. We'd love to hear from you!

I am very happy to find this video! I just bought today the same model and very close to the same serial number. I was trying to find out how old mine was and stumbled onto your video :)

If you take the springs apart be careful they can cause injury when sprung. Get an old pillow case or burlap sack and put the casing in it and tie up the top. Wear heavy gloves and tap the spring out with a hammer. It should come off and unwind in the sack. Don't let the spring get dirty. You can examine it and see if the break is in the middle or at the end. If it's just the end you can recut the attachment part, re-hook and rewind it. (You may also want to clean off old grease before you re-pack it as well.) If the spring is broken in the middle you'll have to replace it. There are some replacement springs sold on EBay. Be careful and Good Luck!

How much energy, joules does this hold?
I am guessing about 25 watts per second. If it will run the system for 4 minutes, then about 1000 watt-seconds or Joules.

I like this. I have a Victrola my grantfather bought as a teenager circa 1920. I used to listen to it at our cottage as a boy, where we had no electricity. However lately it to runs slow inspite of the speed adjustment. I think I need to open it up and clean it. I dont know much about different lubricants. Should I use a brush and some WD40 or some silicone? Where do I use grease and where oil? Too bad yours was already cleaned. Would have been interesting.

Looks to me you have turn the spindle side 90o into repair modus.
These recordplayers must have been repaired at home by an mechanical operator on the spot as it was to difficult to move these delicate and very costly cabinets.
The replacement of the clock must go easy.
The springs of these clock break after time.

When I wind up my portable one, it makes a sound when I wind it like 3 times and then it loses all of it’s force. Do someone know how to fix it?

Sounds like you have a problem with the spring. Either the spring detached from the barrel or the spring is broken. Chilldude2007 made a great 6 part video on a Victor 2 spring motor rebuild. Also, The Compleat Talking Machine book Fifth Edition has a great section on how to repair a spring pages 15 - 16.

The flat weight in the governor is wrong. They should all be like the other two.
