The fact that *this* book is now worthy of Codex Compliant, my first ever purchase aside from White Dwarf in the entire hobby, makes ME feel old so I sympathise somewhat! I wonder how players worked that out in narrative campaigns. Would they follow the wording to a t and revert them back once the game ends? Or have them be a squig the whole campaign?
@@WarhammerGeek I never had this happen to me, as I can't remember seeing Zogwort's Curse actually happening successfully, but I'd have said that they remained as a Squig, but an identical character would come and replace them.

This was the first codex I ever got back in High School when I started out in 5th. I thought it was radical, with how every unit had it's own lore and unique art; and the large chunks of writing on Ork society and kulture(especially about the bit of the Imperials trying to make sense of certain orky things, like how the hell their vehicles work and how their society functions day-to-day). And yes, I did scream WAAAGH, because the first match I ever played I still remember, mainly because I said something along the lines of "I will be declaring a Waaagh now" and my opponent said "Come on dude, these are Orks! You gotta scream it!" and he proceeded to scream WAAAGH! at the top of his lungs, with everyone else in the store's game room joining in. It was a thunderous noise that I'm sure the rest of the mall heard. Thanks for jogging some good memories Snip and Wob.

With my birthday being on April 1st amongst all this chaos, I just wanna say I love you two and this video made it less of a trudge to get through till tomorrow and helping time pass by watching your videos
Between this and some of the other Ork lore I've been learning, I really want to make an army that's based around the idea of attacking planets with the nicest stuff (furniture, art, etc.) and just trashing it. Smear snotlings on the walls. Food Fights going on in all of the kitchens. And most importantly: putting their dirty, nasty feet on all of the furniture just because they want to cause a ruckus everywhere. It'd be like making Da Choppa's from AoS for 40k. Their war cry alonside "Waaaaaagh" would be "Fek your couch!" I'd call them the Ricketeers.
I was just watching your episode on the early 40k games, and I just realized that that episode is closer (in terms of time) to this codex than it is to your codex compliant review of it.
As a long time Orky fan, this was an interesting watch, as it was from after I stopped reading new books. It I’d love you to look at the original 1st edition Orks and Freebooterz books, they were so random.
I remember going to the game store and picking this up when it came out! I started in 3 edition and it does not fee that long ago! I stopped playing only about a year and a half after it came out and just got back into the hobby. You are right about time seeming longer after 30!
12:55 In the current AoS Ogre book there is indeed a page of conversions! Its pretty neat! This book was also my first ever in the hobby, I still hold an awful lot of love for it!
Fun fact in the timeline of this codex the writer, Phill Kelly, makes a covert reference to the Squats in Ghazghkulls lore section. It is in the battle of Golgotha part, (in the old lore Golgotha was a Squat world which at the behest of a Inquisitor Horst send reinforcements to Armageddon. The had been delayed due to Warpstorm and only arrived after the space marines had forced Ghazghkull off the planet and proceeded to hunt down many of his stranded Boyz.) when Yarrick was hunting down Ghazghkull. "Using his Tellyportas to make a series of lightning strikes, Ghazghkull quickly overcame the war engines and battle collossi of the planet's abhuman defenders."
Ahh good times. I'm just now getting back into Orks but I played a whole lot of that codex back in the day. Nob wound cheese was fun, but man did my green tide always get shot off the board, even with a force field mek in my centerpiece battlewagon.
Have kids. The existential dread should subside when you have brand new little humans running around enjoying life, and show you all things for the very first time again.

I haven't watched the video yet but this is gonna be nostalgic. This was the first army I ever played so this was also my first ever codex. My first ever game of Warhammer was the assault of black reach box playing as Orks…. I was told to declare a Waaagh! You actually HAD to shout Waaagh! I was really nervous to do it so on the count of three everyone in the store (like, four people) all shouted with me. It was a great introduction to Warhammer.
You guys stay safe/well too. Love the videos and your channel, I'm from exactly the same generation so totally get how this makes you feel old! At this point I'm totally down with any codex!
Aww I still have this Codex, the first one I ever owned, I started 40k in 5th edition with Assault on Black Reach and got this Codex not long after. Also still own the nids Codex from the same era.
Can still use looted wagons. Just counts as using the stat line of whichever new buggy suits it best. The sections on conversions is something i really miss in the new codexes
Fantastic episode! Keep up the great work, you're improving all the time! Also, I'd love to see more batreps, if you ever get the time and/or motivation to do so.
Kinda surprised you didn’t mention the fact in this book every Big Mek you took allowed you to take a Deff dread as a troop choice. I bring this up because I remember reading a battle report in a White Dwarf in which Phil Kelly (the books author) used this ability to spam Deff Dreads and Killa Kans (because back then you could only have 3 heavy support units and Deff Dreads couldn’t be taken in squadrons) Also, Thanks for the video guys! Hope everyone is staying safe!
This video allowed me to come to the realisation that I want a squad of Killa Kanz painted up like various canned foods. I.e. HEINZ BEANZ, KREAM OF WAAAAGH SOUP.
This was the codex I really got into tournament play with! Having a 65 army model at 750pts was truly disgusting, and forced me to become a much faster player to get games done in a reasonable timespan. Rolling 120 attacks for a 30-ork squad never got old... Also the models at the time were so gorgeous, with the new vehicles being killer (that Battlewagon!) and the special units having so much character (I remember adoring those metal Kommandos).
as someone who started playing right as 4th came out, and dropped out around the time 6th started, this was pretty much "the" ork codex i was facing. saw more than a few attempts to kitbash that biker warlord too, we had a few cult of speed types in the scene were i was. too bad they never made a proper model for it, otherwise he might have stuck around.
Sometimes when I'm rewatching codex compliant in parts of the video I start feeling anxious and I finally realized why: they are reusing the intro (which is great BTW.) but sped up where my reptile brain says "DANGER be careful". Like you can barely hear it over them talking but it is their.
@snipe and Wib " The standard tactic was to ram the vehicles with deff rolla" Incorrect this was the edition of black reach, everyone used twin linked rocket launchers that get to move in the scout phase, had turbo boost, toughness 5 bike rule, and a cover save. aka deff koptas.
Speaking of scatter dice, I played a game in 5th were I had wiped out a large amount of my opponents forces (space wolves if you were curious) in the first two turns and was making a solid assault on there objectives with some aspect warriors and an avatar of khaine when his squad of long fangs with missile launchers and plasma cannons proceeded to score 7 direct hits in a row, completely halting my advance and turning the game from a surefire victory into a tie.
Hang on, couldn't you target anyone with the Squig-modifying spell? The Skaven "Curse of Thirteen" allows you to target ANYONE on foot and turn 2D6 of them into Clanrats.
@@TheSmart-CasualGamer Turning some 300-400 pts HQ into a squig on a 4+ roll was dissapointing. Bear in mind, there was no way to resist spells back then.
Thats why when you saw your opponent take a Grey Seer in WF you shot at it with *everything* . Or make it rout as fast as possible. Or keep your dispell scrolls at hand
Despite having horrible wound allocation rules, 5th edition might still be my favorite edition of 40k. A lot of great models came out at that time, including the awesome Dark Eldar total range redesign, and there seemed to be a good balance between flavorful and streamlined rules. Apocalypse had come out and we had a plastic Baneblade, and everything seemed new and exciting.
I still have this book and fondly remember confounding most non-Ork players by taking no battlewagons or indeed vehicles of any kind unless they were Deff Dredds. Playing as Snakebites, I rarely bothered with even a mass assault, but usually just split my Boyz mobs into two groups. My favourite tactic being 40 of them ganging up on 10 space marines. Meks were great however. The KFF really gave the boyz a chance of surviving long enough to kill a Daemon Prince or Avatar of Khaine. Lootas however were best used in small numbers or kept right at the back of the board.
A bunch of my friends back in the day played Orks and only one used Old Zogwort. I was playing him with my Black Templars and I had a super powered Chaplin with a jump pack about to attack him and he pulled out Zogworts curse on me. We had a crowd watching us when the roll happened and I lost. I just put my head in my hands as he handed me the stat line and I removed my Chaplin and he replaced it with a squig with a skull helmet. I laughed and cried at the same time.
I want to get into Ork and even after finding out that wartraks, big gunz, and looted wagons are no longer competitive will not stop me from creating them.
12:00 can attest it does indeed work. Had more then once where a grot hit and wounded a alaitoc hemlock, and also taking a few heavy weapons hits that failed to wound them. Damn lucky grots. Also wow they went through 3 editions since I started and finished middle school?? Doesn't feel that long ago.
...Quiet at the back, there...*ahem*...played Space Wolves since Rogue Trader...first army were RTB01's...love me some Beakies...;-)...anyway, 50 odd now...keep up the good work, you two...love your style...
You forget the cool Flash Gitz rules they had in that edition, with the custom Snazzgun options and the ability to take a Painboy. I converted those guys off the bat from the Assault on Black Reach nobs. This was an awesome edition!

Just seeing that codex again makes me want to kitbash some vehicles. Love it :)
1:40 I get it Snipe, but I COULD LITTERALLY DO NOTHING BUT SIT HERE AND WATCH SINCE THE END OF FEBRUARY T_T
Stay safe and lots of love from Italy.
The oil paint makes the cover look so cool.
Hang on, couldn't you target anyone with the Squig-modifying spell? The Skaven "Curse of Thirteen" allows you to target ANYONE on foot and turn 2D6 of them into Clanrats.
Inedependent characters only.
@@EnragedOxygen Huh. That's a bit dissapointing.
@@TheSmart-CasualGamer Turning some 300-400 pts HQ into a squig on a 4+ roll was dissapointing. Bear in mind, there was no way to resist spells back then.
@@EnragedOxygen Fair point. Not sure what you'd be taking to have a 400pt HQ choice in 5th Edition though.
Thats why when you saw your opponent take a Grey Seer in WF you shot at it with *everything* . Or make it rout as fast as possible. Or keep your dispell scrolls at hand
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH thank you for the continual awesome vids.
This was my first introduction to the orks and it really holds up to todays’ standards through these ‘umie flower tinted mek goggles
*looks at his cabinet and sees the predecessor to this codex on the shelf* Oh Slaanesh, I *am* getting old...
Joking aside, great vid as always!
I saw the video in my subscription feed and as it was loading up I was just yelling "orks orks orks orks ORKS ORKS ORKS ORKS OAKS OAKS OAKS OAKS O-"
Good to see you both healthy!
Remember to moisturise, all of this handwashing takes its toll.
Thank you for the lovely video.
I miss this codex I played it through 5th edition
...Quiet at the back, there...*ahem*...played Space Wolves since Rogue Trader...first army were RTB01's...love me some Beakies...;-)...anyway, 50 odd now...keep up the good work, you two...love your style...
Be safe my dudes! We'll make it through this bout of nurgles plague.
April 1st? For orks?
PERFECT
considering they live in the UK... and I also live in europe... no. Still the 31st here
You forget the cool Flash Gitz rules they had in that edition, with the custom Snazzgun options and the ability to take a Painboy. I converted those guys off the bat from the Assault on Black Reach nobs. This was an awesome edition!
