Mortal Kombat Trilogy is a fighting game released by Midway in 1996 as an update to Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Unlike the previous title, it was not released in arcades (except for a cameo in a movie), but was instead released for the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn and PCs. Further versions were also released for the Game.com and R-Zone.
Mortal Kombat Trilogy features the same gameplay and story as Mortal Kombat 3, but adds characters and stages from the other three arcade games, including Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Some completely new characters were also introduced. New additions to the game included the "Aggressor" bar, a meter that fills during the course of the match and temporarily makes a player character faster and stronger. It also features a new finishing move called Brutality, a long combination of attacks that ends with the opponent exploding.
The game was met with mixed reviews. The harshest criticism directed at the Nintendo 64 version, which did not have all the content of the other versions due to limited storage space on the cartridge.
can we at least appreciate the n64 version for not having load times? I hate the load times in the ps1 version.

The load times were totally worth it. They still aren't that bad to this day, IMHO. I had the Saturn version and it was the same way.

Load times suck, but I didn’t realize how compromised this version was in sound and animation until I played it. The reviews were too kind- the frame cuts, muffled voices and wonky chip tune renditions of the arcade music make you feel like you’re playing an SNES port with bigger sprites. PS1, Saturn and PC ports are far more arcade accurate.

The N64 version at least had an excuse. You could only put so much content onto a N64 cartridge, meaning that they could not get all the characters, sounds, and music tracks. They instead used MIDI for the music, and the sounds are muffled. In addition to that, Motaro and Shao Khan are still playable, but are hidden, and cannot be selected via the character select screen.
The good things about this port is that there is no loading time, and that the music is the correct pitch.
Strange thing is, if it's true, Midway didn't even use an entire 64 cart's memory allotment; at the time they could hold 32 mg, with Trilogy they only used 8. I wonder if it was possible to have a mow polished product if they worked more at it

download emulator.. use soft graphics (native n64 graphics) you need a strong CPU to emulate it. If you use 3D plugin it gets ugly
I know right? The N64 versions of many games were awesome, even if most thought it was too different/"inferior" to their conterparts. Like Quake 2, Duke Nukem 64, Doom 64 and many other games, like MKT itself, and I have a N64. Sad thing is that I don't have any of those games mentioned.

@@MLK4044 yes that's the reason. I have I7-4770 and now i have most of the time 60fps, but sometimes, but sometimes dips to 50fps for a second. I would say go use Bizhawk emulator. When I play N64 you almost get native settings and it looks very good MKT N64 and it has better FPS. Go try that one as well
@@capcom23 I just tried Bizhawk and in my case performs the same as Project 64 :/ never thought that running MK Trilogy for the N64 will be such a pain in the ass, It's not like I'm trying on a Pentium 4. I mean I have the actual system and cartridge, but it looks better on emulator than on the actual system via RCA cable.

I need to see if I can find this at disc replay. I never played any of the mortal long at series. And I want to star playing them! The only mortal kombat character I ever played as is Scorpion and that's because of injustice for my Wii u.

why did they change the music so much on the n64 version? but i did like the n64 better cause of no load times like psx was forever on the loading id wish this could come to the eshop, but the psx had all the characters plus bosses and a different cheat menus and options.

There just wasn't enough space on the cart. The devs were working with around 10-12mbs of space and had to cram more content than what mk2 and umk3 already had in it. The music would've taken up the more space if they tried to use lower quality streams of what the arcade version was using, so they went with midi's with crap quality samples.

The N64 sound hardware is basically a more advanced version of the SPC700 chip in the SNES, that's why the music's not the same, it literally couldn't be the same.

Only used a 64 meg cart so they compressed just about all the sounds & used lower quality music to fit everything in there that they could. I think it was a cost consideration thing for them going with the smaller cart. If they had used a 96 meg cart, they easily could've got at least all the sound fx at perfect arcade quality & all the missing characters that the PS1 had. MK4 was a 96 meg cart & it was a pretty much perfect arcade port (including the music) so that tells you it could've been done.
It's not a bad port if you pretend it's just a souped-up Ultimate MK3.
The N64 port of MK Trilogy does feel like the N64 got a port of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 with Baraka, Raiden, Johnny Cage and Khameleon, even the prototype version had the blue portal for the Choose Your Destiny screen.

It's because they only used a 64 meg cart & compressed all the sounds to get them in there & they had to go with low quality music also because of the small cart size. If they just upgraded & used a 96 meg cart, it would've had all sounds at perfect arcade quality plus all the characters the PS1 had. Maybe even the music would've been better too. It sure was on MK4 with a bigger cart size
