I’m still using my pdi09 for live work. At home it’s Two Notes Live and IR’s for recording but for gigs with my EVH heads the pdi09 works just fine through a a PA. I sometimes split the signal and hard pan left and right with tiny bit of delay on one side ( 20ms ). Works great and consistent every time and everywhere and no mic bleed or stands. Always get compliments for my live tone. Looking at trying the Pdi 03 JB with a few more options.
The joe bonamassa version gives a few more options extra. This particular unit alone ,if handed to a good sound guy does wonders even in a studio recording situation. Reliable, analog, passive.
So for those of you who are wondering my thoughts! I like double micing a guitar amp live generally but for FOH the Palmer can sound better since the PA system is treated like the guitar cabinet. It’s too dry maybe for IEMs but if a band is on wedges I wouldn’t have a problem with the Palmer, just need to a do some eq but once it’s dialed it’s never changing from night to night!
Met Fuel's sound-tech who told me about a gig at-which guitarist Carl Bell was not happy with the mics on his cabs. Said they tried everything until he grabbed the PDI09 & (if I'm remembering correctly) they didn't bother putting mics on his cabs after that. I've run a $40 VOX AC30 Amplug into a PDI09 to FOH & it sounded like a $1500 AC30. I haven't mic'ed an amp in years. When I record I use the Johnson J-Station.
Ya it’s definitely a cool sound for foh. Some musicians don’t care for it in the ears because it’s a little stiff sounding. These days if you’re still gigging an actual amplifier I think the best route is to load a cab IR you love into one of those hardware speaker sim boxes and send that to foh and mons. Or just load that same cab IR into kemper/axe fx/etc
Right now, I'm using the Palmer Acoustic Pocket Amp (good for both electric guitars and acoustic guitars) as a second to last "pedal" on my pedalboard. I run the pocket amp simulator to the PDI-09 for the speaker simulation effect and run that XLR right out to the sound board / mains. So far it seems like it works! I also use that same setup for my home studio use and it gets the job done.
I have used this palmer forever. My experience is when the guitar is played by itself "like in the video" the palmer will sound slighty ratty. IMO When mixed with a band in a live situation the guitar is much easier to place in the mix, and does not sound ratty at all.
@@BagusWibisono I don't have an Axe fx, I'm a tube amp guy. My Vox AC15 C1 sounds best with theTorpedo (celestion)+Palmer (panned), my crunchy DSL50 sounds great with a Behringer GI-100 Ultra G or Palmer,+eq-ing or +an additional Celestion IR mixed in
So you are sending a powered signal into this box and then sending it back out (using the thru) to power the cabinet ? And then the balanced out goes to the PA for a better guitar tone (versus a mic’d cabinet) ?? I am here because I like the Spin Doctors guitar tone and it looks like he was a fan of using these for live shows.
if it's 200 watts or less and placed between the output section of the combo and the speaker for the combo, then yes. if your combo has the speaker hardwired to the amplifier then I believe no.
A good cabinet IR is the best so I think these Palmer type tools will disappear over time. Palmers have a great sound too, just not as natural as a good impulse loader like a torpedo or whatever
I’d be willing to bet the axe fx sounds much better but some live sound engineers still carry around palmers. The Palmer is nowhere near as versatile as a library of different cabinet IR’s
Thedeceiverofall I’ve only heard it for the first time today but the “normal” setting isn’t extremely different from a 57 up close. I’ll be keeping one in my work box for tours for sure.
Hi! Can I ask you a question? I have an ENGL Powerball I, can I plug it to the Palmer and then to a Presonus 22vsl into a pc for recording or studio jamming? thank you! cheers for the video
You must have your speaker connected, too, or you'll damage the amp, it's not a load box! You'll need a load box or an attenuator if you don't want to use a speaker and record silently.
@@boimesa8190 no. And it’s not really a cab emulation. A speaker emulation is different. It’s a little more stiff and sounds great at FOH but not so much on recording or in ears. If you’re looking to get a DI of the amp signal you could try a passive DI being fed by a line out on the amp or the fx loop. I think that will get you what you’re looking for.
veerchasm1 this product is for live sound so the sound guy can treat the line array PA at the show like it was his speaker cabinet. I agree with you 1000%.
@Michael Wong i probably wouldn’t use this in a studio. It’s not like a cab IR. It’s pretty stiff. But live it really really sounds awesome through a big PA!

T Francis exactly
exactly...I often like them better than IRs especially with distortion for that reason and I like to mix mic+ palmer or palmer+ IRs

Need more vlogs! :D
I really enjoy your videos as I want to become an audio tech as well.
Great video, was pleasantly surprised by the Palmer, as i've heard bad sounding tracks with them (compared to live 57s) from them before.
Whats the make and model of your omnidirectional room microphone? It sounds really good with just that mic
Found it DBX RTA-M
Yupp, a better option would be anything by earthworks tho.

Yes you are correct!
Can palmer the junction be used if it meets a Combo amplifier?

Giovan Battista Martino you should be able to use this with any amp that has a speaker output. Cheers!

So Huh? What is the DI for??
The idea is to use this instead of a microphone for a live concert PA system. That is why the comparison was done against an SM57.
@@snapascrew is there also a flat setting that doesn't emulate a cab??
