3:37 Cyclone Gabrielle destroyed this rail bridge on 14th Feb, Valentines Day, 2023. 7:22 Extensive rail and structural damage to this bridge South of Waipukarau. Repairs and replacement are still active as of 16th June 2023. 11:59 Manawatu Gorge Road on SH3, was permanently closed on 2017 due to a giant landslide. The Napier-Wellington rail passenger service ceased in 2001, with the line solely being used for freight. What an amazing record of the era. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was a young teen at the time, living and schooling in Napier until venturing to Wellington before the rest of the World embraced me like a second home. Napier is where I belong though. I'm back! Back for good and a little bit of bad.😊😂 As children through to older teens, my big sister, little brother and I traveled this line often, visiting relatives in Paraparaumu, Wellington city, Ngaio and Johnsonville. Tertiary education at Massey Uni in Palmerston North and Victoria Uni in Wellington. The Bay Express wasn't only an experience, but a vital link between home, family and our futures. Loved every minute and centimetre, whichever direction, whatever season and reason, wherever the destination.
I use catch the train from pamerston north to Napier when at university in the 1980s. Classic. Now live in esk hills and watch the trains to east coast until cyclone wiped out the tracks. Miss them big time

All the rail sidings in video convince me that how much more customer focused the railways were in that era.
this stuff is gold. 1990 hey... what a simple era it still was...
It was a magical time for me as a kid. Then I felt like I lost something when Aramoana happened.
thankyou for this video. 1990 is not long ago... yet some pieces of infrastructure in this video are very 'vintage'!
Historic footage of Napier station and tablet working on the PNGL!
Amazing how so much hasn't changed a lot.
