- I've been living in Berlin for a month and a half... There have been several "culture shock" moments and things that I've noticed are different. Most of them are small differences, but when you live in another country, those small differences add up. Especially during the first few weeks of adjusting!

Fun fact: not only Europe uses metric system. The whole World uses metric system! Just US doesn't...

@@Hono1256 All countries bigger than the us use metric. In Russia, Canada and China there's no issue with using metric. It's just a mere excuse , a lack of interest to adapt and a bit of laziness (and false pride). Unfortunately it makes things complicated. And complicated things cost time and thus money. For nothing.
Another fun fact: That's why american military as well as the us space and aviation industry are using metric exclusively

And again cost and chaos is only an excuse. traffic signs are to be replaced regularly even without measurement change. And trade labeling is already done in both measures. So costs are negligible (and i don't see how measurement units could cause even more chaos in the US... )
Btw: S.I. IS the metric system... 95% of world population uses S.I. units in their everyday life.
So without conversion needs with the rest of the world you'd even save money!
So for the refusal to adopt S.I. there are finally only 2 possible explanations:

And his time's already over for nearly 35 years. i hardly could've worked for him.

8 years ago I moved from Florida to North Carolina. Still recovering from the culture shock.
I heard people are really friendly and old school like in the Carolinas. I found Arkansas very classic Americana like that visiting my brother a few years back. I miss our old way where we all felt a common relationship enjoying small talk and chatting about the weather and happenings. I try to chat like that with people today and they mostly are very cold and untrusting like I'm assaulting them. Do you think people are a bit too nosy and gossipy where you live? I remember that was a key feature of the old culture. The new culture everywhere is where everyone stays to themselves, doesn't chat, and doesn't ever know neighbors while just being fearful and antisocial of one another in public areas.
Well I guess that's going with where one's from in FL. In southern gulf side as in panhandle, what you said sounds the same.

I live in Florida. It's pure trash. Politically, it's in the Stone Age. The entire US is a failing nation-state with almost nothing to offer its middle-class citizens. The difference between one idiotic southern state and any other is miniscule.
Hahahaha! As a born and bred Southern Californian who’s lived in Utah, Pennsylvania, and now Texas, each state does feel like its own country sometimes. I found people from NC to be very nice and “country.” Don’t get me started on living in Mexico…
Nice video. I lived in Nuremberg in the mid-70s for 3 1/2 years (US Army). Still, the best place I've lived in my life. And German/Europe is so far advanced over the US with almost everything.

When you mentioned the windows I thought for sure you'd mention that you can tilt the window by turning the handle upwards, so it was a bit surprising that it was just about being able to open the window at all.
And yeah, Berlin is the capital of "just be yourself, we don't really care".
And we´ve got something new in Germany, a person with such a relaxed voice. You could talk about maths or anything I would listen to;)😌

@@andreag983 I am from Berlin and this is definitely true what she is telling about. Maybe you come somewhere else in Germany? But for Berlin it’s true. I mean it’s her point of view and she is comparing between the US and Germany.
I absolutely loved my time in America, but something that was difficult to get used to, was the fixed showers. It meant that every morning, I had to start the day with a hand-stand in the shower so that the water could reach every part of me. Eventually, I got used to the daily shower hand-stand, but I kept thinking how much easier it would be to just install a handle.
I have a hand-held shower head but I installed it myself.
Well it looks like you're having a good time and adjusting to things very well. I've been planning a move to somewhere in that region, so I sometimes discover a channel like yours randomly.
But I have to admit, every time I read your name I think of some imaginary teen sitcom “It's Madison Ferguson!” But maybe you're a little too soft spoken for the show I've dreamed up. :) But keep exploring and taking it all in. And there are tons of people making the move to that area, so while you build a group of local friends, if you get a little lonely be sure to investigate the expats. Also, I took a look at some of your older uploads, and I really commend you for the work you've done with people. Good luck.
In Germany we do not pay for recycling, we pay for not recycling. A garbage bin costs 100-200€ per year, recycling bin and paper bin are free.
That's not exact! First you pay for some of the containers, at least the yellow and the grey and in many towns etc. you have to pay a fee for entering the "Wertstoffhof" ...
Usually the shower handle can be slided into the holder so you dont need to hold it. I take it out only when I rinse my tub. In Berlin there is no quiet time regulated by law except Sundays unless its a regulated by your landlord. Never heard of windows not opening in Germany.

The past tense of slide is slid.
@@olyvoyl9382 This is not about the past tense per se, but about the present PASSIVE tense. And the present passive tense of "slide" - as with any other (irregular) verb - is NOT formed with the past tense, as you say, but with the past participle (see the cardinal forms of irregular verbs). In this case, it is not relevant because the second and third stem forms are the same. With e.g. "give - gave - given", however, the situation is rather different; hence "I am GAVE a present" doesn't work! It's always a bit embarrassing if you want to correct someone and don't know for sure yourself. Greetz from a German!

I lived n Germany for a total of six years and I loved every second of it. I travel to Germany often and I am always looking forward to my next visit. I was actually waiting for the „windows“ comment, but actually was surprised that you didn‘t mention the „tilting“ function. Could it be that you have not yet figured this function out? Just turn the handle all the way up and the window will tilt towards you a little!

OMG, there are of course the city classics like Munich, Dresden, Cologne and Hamburg and of course Berlin. It depends on what you want, mountains or sea? To get a first overview, I can recommend RUclips, because many have already asked themselves this question and have documented their experiences. Regions such as the Black Forest or the Harz Mountains may not be as well known, but they are nice. Of course, Neuschwanstein Castle should not be missing from the program.
@@madsmissions9885 Since you're already in Berlin, give Potsdam a visit. Plenty of old palaces/castles and history of pre-WW1 Germany there, but also an old Nazi/Stasi prison that was turned into a museum.
But ultimately, you can pretty much pick one at random and find something to explore there.
If you ever have the opportunity to visit the south of Germany, I can recommend a trip to Salzburg (Austria) from my own experience. I saw that you have already visited Dresden. I hope the time was enough to see the essence.
@@madsmissions9885 Definitely try Hamburg. For me its the most beautiful City, with very different distracts. And for a weekend trip its not so far away from Berlin.
Interestingly, the bottle deposit system was first introduced in D by the CocaCola Company in 1929, it is thus an American innovation so to speak.
It is not just the Europeans who use the metric system, it is rather the US and the UK that are pretty much the only ones left in the universe not doing so (yet). Even Canada has moved on.
That's good to know! I don't know why the US doesn't have more bottle deposit machines.
@@madsmissions9885 You can take the ICE from Berlin to Hamburg very quickly. So better visit Hamburg now, later it will be too far away!
Only three countries - the U.S., Liberia and Myanmar - stick to the imperial system, the rest of the World use the metric system
@@theAkildare Yes and no: Plumbers and everybody else who links pipes and tubes to each other use imperial and US threading systems and measure the inner diamters of tubes in inches as they are used worldwide. Your "Gardena" garden system has 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch and so on fittings. And in commerce and trade we use containers which are measured in feet and cubic feet. Aviation and shipping, too, use feet.

You get money out when recycling. As you said. Otherwise collecting glass, metal, plastic, paper doesn't cost you. Put it into the correct bins. Showers are always detachable 😊
usually you can fix the shower - so you can use it either in your hand or just fix it above you and let it rain.
Hallo madison, you have to try out the Most germen food that there is its " Bratkatoffeln" there are ez to make and if you use Butter and take your Time cooking just jummmy😊

Your videos are excellent -- you are outstanding before the camera. A couple suggestions: mix in shots of the outside environment, e.g., streets, people, activities. Perhaps even a few interviews of other US ex pats who are working or attending school in Germany.
Regarding jaywalking: I just recently learned, that jaywalking in the US means crossing a roadway that has traffic without a specific crossing point. That is not the case in Germany. While you have to use dedicated crossing points, if they are close by, you are free to cross roadways based on your own jugdement.
So while people are likely to complain when you are crossing an intersection, while the signal is red for you, they will be perfectly fine, when you are crossing traffic 100 meters further down, without any crossing point (as long as you're doing it responsibly).

I think the quiet hours during the day are in regards to elderly people, many of them like to take a nap around that time after having lunch, so being quiet during that time probably is in respect to them so they can have a good rest.
There are also people who work at night or little kids
Quiet hours, aerating places, not needing AC, you are all right. People sometimes are annoying by telling you if you did wrong. But it seems to strengthen society.... Interesting your perceptions. I 've been living in the US, the UK and then returned to Germany. And - hey, it's not all golden over here 😊
At least in Cities zoos, museums, restaurants, gas stations, cinemas etc. are open on Sundays as well.

The handheld in the shower is typical for the last decades. Since about five to ten years, there are more build in showerslike "rainforrest", but almost together with a handheld.

@@madsmissions9885 whispering sounds very soothing, though. I found that regardless of the actual sound volume, it is much more pleasurable to listen to quiet, soft voice. That's the base idea of ASMR thing, I guess.
That is the quiet time between 13-15 is lunch time when people go home to eat and rest.
Imagining someone wearing a picture frame as a necklace is making me laugh way harder than it should.

when I moved to Germany the recycling system was real schock.it took time for me to understand it.I made a RUclips video about culture Schocks and I can relate to some of your points
There is a well known joke in Germany about recyclng teabags….make sure to seperate paper, decomposable parts, thread and not to forget the little metal clip😂
The recycling system is a huge scam. Everything ends up at the same landfills.

At around 5:56 you're talking about a deposit system. 25ct per large bottle, 15 cent for smaller bottles and tin cans. BUT you already paid extra for that when doing your grocery shopping!. 5 cent per plastic (one use) bag and/or up to 1 euro per reusable bag.
In the Netherlands we don't pay yet for tin cans but it's gonna come soon and all to make you, as a consumer, aware of pollution and of course greedy persons wants their deposit back! hahah.. Recycling starts from within the household. Separate all the stuff and then offer that to municipal garbage collection (each to their own day in the Netherlands) or you dump it in the designated underground garbage containers you see in every suburb here. As a resident you pay taxes for theses services.
Now,during this dangerous time, you probably understand why it is good to have a decent portion of cash transfers,ask estonia what can happen to a cash-free society.or simply without energy.

Moste often German buissneses don’t like visa card because in Europe we have a own system called v pay (former EC) and it is cheaper for the shops to use that. Watch ‚simple german‘ on YT they have great tips for choosing a bank acound. So if you like to use a card as often as possible switch to the European system. But at the street foods and bakerys you will likely still need real money

Lol, I never learned the Fahrenheit, miles, inches... though I was in the US many times. And you probably already learned, it's no bonus, it's the other way around. You pay a deposit for the bottles, then you get your money back when you bring them in. Be careful with english pound v/ German pfund, they are not the same (German pound is half a kilo). You pay for the recycling with your rent, the house owners organize for recycling bins (for glass, paper and "Wertstoffe = plastic) places in the backyards and the price for them is part of the running costs, which are part of the rent. Normal tip is 5 to 10 percent, but the smaller the bill, the higher the tip. So if you have a 2 Euro coffee, you don't just give 20 cent, nice and normal would be 40 to 50 cent. And for the picture frame, yeah, it's just Berlin. Enjoy your stay.

Recycling plastic bottles is the biggest scam. Just wait until you see a shelf toilet. It'll make you scratch your head. The windows are definitely better. Shower wands are awesome. They make cleaning the shower so much easier and quicker. If you don't have one go to Home Depot and spend $35.
Remember all the world uses metric system the imperial system is used only in us, Liberia and Myanmar...

Mit den Ruhestunden von 1- 3 gilt nur für Sonntage und Feiertage. Von Montag bist Samstag kannst du ganz beruhigt in deiner Wohnung Handwerkliche arbeiten oder andere laute Sachen machen wenn du es nicht andauernd machst. Außer laute Musik abspielen das gehört wieder zu vereinbare Ruhestörung.

In the US, you typically have to pay for them to collect recycling at your house or business.

Showers attached to the wall are only a thing in gyms or at public swimming pools in Germany.
For such places it does the job and maybe lowers repair costs, but having such a shower at home does not do the trick; the water does not get everywhere comfortably.
2:50 Yeah....I really wonder why the US still sticks with the imperial system in civl life (don't forget that all science in the USA uses the metric system and not imperial and in the military it's a mixed bag). Funnily enough US americans do actually use the metric system in one aspect of everyday life as well: Money.
Did you know that every time you use the term mile you're actually extremely inaccurate about the distance? There's a total of 47 different lengths that have been called "mile" in the past. Granted, today only 2 of them are still in use: the Imperial Mile (which is waht US americans usually refer to when speaking of miles) and the nautic mile.
Only 3 countries still use the imperial system: The USA, Myanmar and Liberia.
Recycling - well you have to pay for your trash of course, however you don't have to pay specifically for recycling - actually it's the opposite: In some areas of Germany you can get fined if you don't recycle (this varies from region to region though).
11:20 Nope, that's not just Berlin. Being nude is the natural state of every single human. Why making a fuss about that? Besides - many US americans (women in particular) think that other people will stare at them when they are nude. However - if everyone else is also nude that's so normal that no one does stare. Well - granted, if there's a particularly attractive man or woman it is possible that people will notice - we're not blind after all - however no one will hit on someone else in a Sauna or even at an FKK beach. We're all there to enjoy the environment, not to flirt or hit on others. It's a bit different actually - if there's 100 nude people and 1 person who wears a swimsuit, a bikini or something like that that's the moment people will stare because that person simply looks different than anyone else.
The main reason why Germany (and the rest of Europe as well) is so much safer than the US is that we don't have guns everywhere. And of course no maniacs like the NRA nutters (who are all in need of serious therapy because they're obviously insane). The availability of guns in the USA doesn't make the country safe, it's the exact opposite, the guns make the country particularly dangerous. Guns are the main reason why there are so many murders in the USA, and that doesn't even cover all the fatal and non fatal gun accidents. There are about 10,000 murders each year in the USA on average of which roughly 85 % are committed with guns. On top of that there are roughly 20,000 fatal gun accidents and about 70,000 non-fatal gun wounds per year in the USA.
Actually, even the US Custom system (no, not Imperial, that'd be the UK) is completely based in metric. All units are defined based on the metric system. (i.e. the inch is _defined_ as 25.4 mm)
@@Llortnerof The UK doesn't use the Imperial system anymore (at least not officially). Officially the UK uses the metric system.
The difference between the Imperial system and the US customs system are minimal btw. Volume and length measurements are identical, with the only real differences being in weight and mass.
And it doesn't change the fact that this old system is inferior to the metric system and cannot be used in science and mathematics.
Es gab das metrische System in den USA schon mal für kurze Zeit. Am Ende seiner Amtszeit hat es Jimmy Carter eingeführt. Ronald Regan hat es wieder beendet.

A few days ago an american really told me that their money is NOT based on metric system because they have something like quarter dollars or whatever 🙄 Guess that can be added to the actual "whats the dumbest thing an american ever said to you" memes.
I would love to ask where u grew up in the US, because honestly here in Michigan every store that sells pops/soda/beers and stuff has to take return by law.

Here it depends on the bottle, it can be 15, but most often is 25Cent. So that adds up. When I was in Canada it was just a few cent, definitely less than 10.

Detachable shower heads are standard in germany.
If you are going to a restaurant in Germany and the service was good, the rule of thumb is to tip 10% of the bills amount. That might differ if you are still in school or a student.

I have not used cash for like at least 5 years now or even longer. I don't like it. If a store or restaurant doesn't accept Google Pay or CC I will go somewhere else. Only bad thing is, that I never have coins to tip delivery guys and most of their apps still not support tipping :((((

The smaller European squirrels are actually threatened by the US squirrels as invasive species, as they are bigger and are threatening to make the smaller European variant extinct. And the little squirrel certainly didn‘t want to attack you, but was probably expecting to get a little treat/food from you!

You literally have to be looked at by older people if you pay something worth less than 10€ with a card.
That’s seen as something bad for some reason (or more like unreasonable to pay smaller amounts with card)
I think it has something to do with the transaction fee or administration but i am not sure about that. This is the same as when the banks process few transactions but a lot of money is transferred.
Regarding "everything closed on sundays" I'm going to copy an anonymous comment I've read under another video: ➡️ It always puzzles me how for americans shops = "everything". Here is what's open on Sundays: Museums, parks, swimming pools, theaters, cinemas, spas, fitness centers, most restaurants, amusement parks, zoos ski slopes - and every other sport facilities, mountains, bike paths, every cultural facility, churches ... Here is what's closed: shops, banks, government offices. How is that
"everything"? 🙂
The whole world uses the metric system. It‘s ONLY the US using the imperial system (if you ignore Liberia and Myanmar)
Actually, it is not the law to be quiet between 12 and 3, but it is considererd rude. The law is to be quiet after 10 and on Sundays. If you do not follow, your neighbors will call the police.
Nonsense. They will talk to you first. Chances are you didn't realize the noise you made. It happened to me and of course I stopped when my neighbor played it to me in her phone.

If you pay cash to restaurants they do not have to pay to the card issuer a big sum for using the cards - so your meals can be cheaper .... ofc no point in the US where everybody has a lot of money... or does anybody think they card companies do it for free??
Berlin Germany is not like everyithing in Germany....every German get a culture shock living in Berlin.....it´s like Detroit and Flint, Michigan combined...... even when Berliners deny it

I disagree on two points. Not EVERYTHING is closed on sundays. Restaurants, gas-stations, cinemas, theatres, museums, any tourist attraction for that matter is open on sundays!
And you will survive without cash very well! Every supermarket, department store, boutique and all of the above mentioned accept credit cards. If you see the WLAN symbol ))) Apple Pay also works, which is 90% of the time. Since my bank introduced apple pay, I pay almost everything with my watch. The pandemic only pushed contactless payments even more. So maybe you have to pay your occasional Currywurst at a street booth in cash, but otherwise cards are fine. At least, this is how it is around Frankfurt - but I doubt this area is in any way advanced over Berlin! ;-)
That's true about Sundays! Thanks for clarifying. I've heard Berlin accepts cards now more than they have in the past. However, you still need to have cash for several restaurants- at least the ones I've been to. I certainly can't speak for all!
Well....a lot of Germans still love to pay with cash simply because it cannot be traced. It is nobody's business which restaurant you visit or where you shop or what you buy or whatever. Cash is also a form of privacy.
@@madsmissions9885 You have to also pay attention what kind of cards are accepted. People in the US usually use credit cards, while the majority of the Germans use debit cards instead, for the same purpose. The chance for being able to pay via German debit cards is much higher than for credit cards in Germany.
Also a lot of little shops usually operated by Russians and selling alcohol, soft drinks, cigarettes and other small stuff are open from like 9 am to 10pm. I have one next door and about five in walking distance.
Cards are not acceptable everywhere. Just a lot of places and it's more likely in big towns. But try a small bakery in a village? Chances are slim
