Graham Downey oh okay I heard that wrong. Thought they said 240 whp for the fastest car. You must have had a great setup / done some great driving to be only a second behind with more than 100 less HP. I'm still amazed.
I just want to say that I really enjoyed the UTI explanations. Sometimes on shows like Hot Rod Garage, I feel like the information breaks are a little too scripted, vague, and dumbed down. I really enjoyed the enthusiasm and content that he has delivered throughout tuner week. I'm a car enthusiast and I do a lot of work to my own vehicles, so I like to think I know a little bit about cars, but I can proudly say I learned something thanks you guys.
Well, saying "An open diff tends to favour one wheel or the other" is only partly true. He could have said "An open diff sends the power to the wheel with the least amount of grip" and then explained that a limited slip diff locks the wheels together a little bit, limiting the power difference across the wheels for more even grip under acceleration or braking. The downside to an LSD (Limited Slip Differential) is that it makes the car want to push wide on the power because it's locking the wheels together a little more.
im reading a lot of complaining, smh. UTI guy is explaining what plenty of viewers don't know. I don't see an issue with him. Motor Trend video production crew did a great job editing and putting together this video. The FF Battle video is a good watch too. - driver of the green s2k @ 5:40
I stopped watching after the 3rd time that stupid UTI guy came on explaining parts of the car to me like I was a 3 year old. Less product placement, more cars!
Only MotorTrend would treat their subscribers like idiots, their subscribers actually know more about cars than they do yet they have the nerve to be condescending.
I was banned for life on my old account for putting down the Chief editors first RUclips review in a Rolls Royce. He whispered the whole video and it was so bad.
Does anybody know if Motor Trend have a page where they post all of the times at Willow Springs for all of the different cars which have raced there? So everything from these tuner challenges to the stock cars which they test.
Some people can be really ignorant not everybody is a car guru there's kids watching this even young adults who are new to the scene and wanna learn. I love the series because I'm seeing awesome some cars that I love set up to perform at their highest potential and all the components that make em shed time!!!
No problem with the UTI guy unlike so many of the brats around here that don't understand how money works, but I'm echoing what others have pointed out as well. It would be nice if you guys at least showed a hotlap for each car with no talking...
The guy who explains what everything is (such as the disc brakes, why they are bigger/lighter etc) is fantastic. Hire him Motor Trend -- he's really good at talking infront of the camera... a Tuner Show where he hosts it would be fantastic imo!
Motor Trend Channel , 4th episode and ALL the comments are the same. "More laps, less UTI Guy" I get it, these were pre-edited, however, i am sure there is some B-role of a full lap. I would love to see that, even in 480p.
Great showing. Excellent work on all the drivers and amazing feat to get the cars dialed in with the different tire compound. All the drivers in the video are some of the best drivers on the west coast. The video may not show it, but Streets of Willow is a very demanding track and extremely abusive on cars. Temperature varies drastically at SoW and most cars not properly setup will see overheating and brake failure. Glad to see none of the cars go down! UTI guy explained everything well. At times, a little lengthy and his mic a little too close to him, but his explanations are excellent to help the enthusiast gain a better understanding of how each individual component works. Can't wait for 2015's competition!
Well done video, guys. Videos have greatly improved since RUclips necessitated that every magazine have a presence. They used to look like the guy in accounting with a dslr was shooting and editing the crap. really like the copter/drone shots. Servo zoom shots are sorely missed, however.
Always fun to see how hypocritical people are. Motor Trend needs sponsorship money to keep creating content hence the UTI sections. Don't complain about pay walls for videos if a channel does do that.
We might all be car guys but we don't know Everything and this guy seems to explain things very well without getting my in the way of all the action. I can never know too much about cars I'm always open to learning something new about cars, sponsorship or not this UTI guy is good to have especially for people new to the car culture. It's a great way for them to learn and grow the car culture.
Engine stock, but put a HKS supercharger. ....yeah, that is great, but what are you running for engine management, and have you added any more sensors over factory? Superchargers don't do anything if the ECU can't understand what is going on.
You have FlashPro for the DBW cars --- complete control of the computer and more than enough to tune a simple rotrex unit on 10-12psi ---- you must know nothing about Hondas if you think they are running something other than FlashPro for such a basic setup.....if it was a turbo beast maybe an Infinity AEM but most of these guys will be on some form of Hondata - very low whp/street level power setups dont require crazy standalone for tuning
The biggest frustration for people who watch many different Motor Trend Channel shows is that whenever any video involves imports, it feels like they assume anyone watching is a child. On Roadkill, Dirt Everyday, Ignition, Top Truck Challenge coverage, and others, they would never spend 6 minutes of a 15 minute video describing the basics of how brakes, superchargers and suspension components work. Those others shows drop engine displacement numbers, gear ratios, and chassis codes like everyone has been driving GM vehicles for the last 50 years. Don't give me the "they need sponsorship dollars" excuse. Of course they do, but they can just leave the UTI logo in the corner of the whole video, cut out the shop teacher, and replace him with a legitimate host that actually covers the event instead of just flashing lap times and the end of the episode...
Cantenkerous Tim the amount of heat is really the key difference. Turbos are typically notorious for heat soaking and it isn't as bad with a centrifugal supercharger.
centrifugal superchargers are also belt driven, so there is less lag on them typically than a turbo charger, they still have a linear power band, but they make more number up top like a high reving NA motor typically does.
I'm pretty sure they explained it in the video. Centrifigural mimics the original NA engine powerband, and in a car like the super-twitchy s2000 it's a bonus; turbo motor tends to snap oversteer and harder to control when the boost kicks in. BTW, turbo also takes some power from the engine, since it is essentially restricting the exhaust flow.
Why does these kind of videos produced in the US need to have a narrator to explain everything? If you're a car guy or girl that watches these kinds of videos it's highly likely that you already know what unsprung weight is and how a differential and how a dry sump system works already. Just my 0.02
owned a 328IS and a few honda's. BMW was too much money to keep running and not reliable. Bought a brand new 2013 accord sport 6 spd...thought of supercharging it....now thinking of a new platform and the winner... ap2 s2000 with a SOS supercharger sounds nice....if I can convince the wife.. ;) Go Honda!!
6:22... Ive never wanted to punch someone in the face more than this guy.
Jip, this guy's explanations is 50% of less correct and its annoying as fuck.
Why?
Same
Why what?
reino kotze He is explaining as if the viewers are all grandmas or something .
More of the Odessy at 10:00?
Incredible times from these S2000s, and with a claimed less than 300 hp at the crank.
rob who finished 1st makes about 340whp (hks supercharged F22C). I finished 2nd almost a second behind Rob using a N/A F22C making 230whp.
Graham Downey oh okay I heard that wrong. Thought they said 240 whp for the fastest car. You must have had a great setup / done some great driving to be only a second behind with more than 100 less HP. I'm still amazed.

I like how the UTI guy explains, i don't know why everyone is complaining about that
I know right? We're not all car geniuses here so its good to have someone explain things that some might not know along the way.

Adam Hansen Thanks for enlightening us on that
Loving these shoot outs and the commentary from the guys explaining how super charges actually works great job.
Finally one of these videos with racing.. Not interviews.
Great video!
thank you... really enjoy this series
Finally you show a lap of one of these cars!
Fantastic!
Great series!

That red s2k is badass!
The UTI guy reminds me of the "It's Aliens" meme guy lol.
You are getting more than you paid for, quit your bitchin.
Have fun paying for content then. It isn't hard to mute or skip those sections if you are that insecure about your intelligence.
I was banned for life on my old account for putting down the Chief editors first RUclips review in a Rolls Royce.
He whispered the whole video and it was so bad.
Ahh so you would prefer MT to be like Drive+ and go pay only? Sounds great...
Why is there no more FR Shootout?
I'm glad to see UTI as an advertiser on this channel... (Coming from someone who hates dealing with advertisements)
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Hondas sounding best as always! Cool video!
Does anybody know if Motor Trend have a page where they post all of the times at Willow Springs for all of the different cars which have raced there? So everything from these tuner challenges to the stock cars which they test.
great coverage.
thanks!
D

I love the series because I'm seeing awesome some cars that I love set up to perform at their highest potential and all the components that make em shed time!!!
.. why would you hotlap your car with open windows? Might as well attach a small parachute
cool video! thanks for including more on and in car camera views compared to the previous videos. i really enjoy these
No problem with the UTI guy unlike so many of the brats around here that don't understand how money works, but I'm echoing what others have pointed out as well. It would be nice if you guys at least showed a hotlap for each car with no talking...
More i am enjoying this series

They have a ton of footage which would be awesome if they released them
I think the UTI is doing a great job. I learn alot of things from this guy
that s2k sounds so nasty

Wow the second place s2k was n/a what an amazing car!
good video. entertaining and educational
oh shit its Mike Chang lol
yeah thinkin the same yo lol
Secret to having the perfect six pack = supercharger.
And Tom Tang blew his diff that day lmao.
That E30 is sweet...
thanks man...
Well done video, guys. Videos have greatly improved since RUclips necessitated that every magazine have a presence. They used to look like the guy in accounting with a dslr was shooting and editing the crap.
really like the copter/drone shots. Servo zoom shots are sorely missed, however.
The cover photo features Ryan Passey`s Miata, but it is no where to be seen in the video... odd
Always fun to see how hypocritical people are. Motor Trend needs sponsorship money to keep creating content hence the UTI sections. Don't complain about pay walls for videos if a channel does do that.
I love watching this tuner week, it's nice to see what people do to their cars. :)
I wonder if the alumni students are angry to know that this is where all that expensive tuition money went?
And lets be honest, belt buckle aside, he's pretty good on camera and has lots of information many people probably haven't heard before.
intercede007 I think he does a very good job at explaining things and being interesting. I wouldn't mind if he became a full time host.
We might all be car guys but we don't know Everything and this guy seems to explain things very well without getting my in the way of all the action. Great video guys keep it up, loved those s2000's.
Omg when the s2000 was on the track on 12:00 I swear it was music to my ears!!!
UTI guy is a master of half-knowledge.
i see a whole bunch of subarus in the background is there going to be a awd?
Love those s2000's
Whats the jazz music in the background? I love it
We need more S-chassis entered next time. I care for grip more than drifting in my S13. It keeps me alive on the streets of Houston.
Evasive S2000 is probably one of my favorite tuner s2k right next to the Amuse R1 titan
Not sure if I missed it but where are the lap times listed?
the guy from uti is Mr galambos he's passionate about teach he's a great instructor and know his stuff well
that Honda odyssey behind the S2000 though!
S2000=beast
6:44........that rub though. lol
I came for the miata in the thumbnail.. Theres wasn't a miata in the video...
Nice video
So where is the miata with the sharkteeth that was in the videos thumbnail? a FR track battle and no miatas seems weird?
Anyone know which hardtop is on the evasive s2k?
3:40 "mr. no duh"
I hear those S2000 are so good they might just banned them.
Why no 240's?
This UTI character went to the "Ron Popeil" School of Infomercial Public-Speaking
Where was the miata on the thumbnail???
Anyone notice the lowered oddessy in the background at 10 min.
Honda's dominate.. as usual.
I absolutely musth ave those two first songs. Anyone have their names?
10 years after Best Motoring's American Touge this is the best you can do?
Engine stock, but put a HKS supercharger. ....yeah, that is great, but what are you running for engine management, and have you added any more sensors over factory? Superchargers don't do anything if the ECU can't understand what is going on.

Turbo and supercharger still needs engine management to regulate your fuel input/output.
I hope they have rr next
You lost me at drilled rotors.
guys can some1 tell me how much tunned car cost?for exma that subaru or m3?
On the next episode of Tuner Battle...Muscle car shootout!...wait what
I need a onboard of that BMW E36 M3 that i6 just sings!
YES! An entire (kinda) onboard lap! FINALYYYY!!!! xD Was it that hard MTC?
At 10:57, did anyone notice the minivan in the background? Lol
Is "FR" front engine/rear wheel drive?
Yup.
What does FR stand for?
Edit: why are those two cars in the thumbnail if they're not in the video
Wow, no rotaries, no FDs or FCs, not even a mx5
Disappointed not to see a built Corvette Z06 or something out there. I get that this event is centered around Super Street and European Car, however.
where is dirt every day?
Just one thing. No replacement for displacement! lol
Those superchargers sure sound like turbos to me
I hope jager racing is here for the awd part.
id love to work in a shop like that
Did they forget about the dyno section?
R0CKSTAR023 there was no dyno testing for the rwd cars. only for the FF Battle and Euro Tuner Shootout.
Graham Downey Well that's kinda lame
The dude in the red shirt is like the bill nye of cars. Also motor trend killed drive
Wheres the subaru and mx5 nopemjust more honda s2000 and bmws
It's a rwd event so why would there be a subaru?
loryk_zarr The Subaru BRZ is RWD.
loryk_zarr theres a o7 sti and a mx5 in the thumbnail tho
Where is the red miata with shark mouth that is the thumbnail picture for this video? I feel cheated
Excellent video guys!!!! :o)
Where are Honda haters? S2k is now 16 years old and what? Its still the best track car.
s2k ftw👌

What's the point of the centrifugal supercharger if it does almost the same thing as a turbo, but takes power from the engine?

like the BRZ
You ruined these videos with the UTI guy explaining things.
FF Battle vs FR shootout
14:14 What the fuck is a '97 BMW MW

is uti using this footage for a commercial? these explinations are horribly placed, do a shootout like the diesel challenge
What does FR mean?
sgamessjlego Front engine, rear wheel drive.
Graham Downey makes sense... thanks dude!
i wanted to see the miata in thw thumbnail!!
Battle of the hondas 2
owned a 328IS and a few honda's. BMW was too much money to keep running and not reliable.
