Earthen dams are used for cost-effectiveness and material availability, while gravity dams offer stronger structures and are preferred where stable rock foundations exist. Both are still in use today.

Dams are built across the width of a river to block water flow and create a reservoir. Building along the length wouldn’t stop the water.
