- 100-year businesses don't exist. The retail industry is dead. In the rugged White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, neither of those statements are true. North America’s oldest ski shop, Lahout’s, has remained open 365 days a year since 1920. While e-commerce and conglomerates have stripped the country of local, independent retailers, a family of Lebanese immigrants have prevailed for a century, beating the Great Depression, World War II, the Dot Com Crash and the Great Recession.
Here's an idea...instead of buying online this winter, buy at least one piece of gear( assuming you're buying anything) from your local shop.
This proves local ski shops are vital to our communities and to our culture.
2020 sucks, let's make it suck a little less
I'm going to be doing this when I get my board this summer
This is my local shop and I couldn’t be prouder of it! Lahouts is the best
This is skiing! Forget the 3 sec clips of backflips that weren't landed or the heli ski runs that 99% of us will never have the luxury to enjoy. Great doc! thank you TGR!
fully agreed!
Thank you!
Deeply touching.
My first skis came from Lahout's, and I terrorized Cannon every time I stayed with my grandparents in Whitefield. After living and skiing out West the North Country spirit never fades.. RIP Joe Lahout
I love this story and I will definitely be buying something at Lahout's this season. My first ski trip was to Mittersill when I was probably 6 or 7, we drove by Cannon and it was very scary. Sixty years later and having raised my 3 sons to become ski racers in Vermont, we recently moved to North Conway area and I am determined to get to Cannon this winter. Thanks again to sharing this wonderful story, your grandfather was quite a man!
my favorite ski movie! I hope TGR does more movies like this.
Authenticity in skiing at its finest. Growing up in New England enjoying snow sports and now living in Colorado for the past 15 years, I appreciate this short film. The focus on family and perseverance is clear. Well done!
Thank you Ashley!
TGR films just move me deeply. I love the vision you all have, the stories you tell.
My family would make the pilgrimage too Lahouts every year. Making the long journey from St. J. Joe Sr and Gladys would always be there for us. In later years it was Joe Jr and Herb. Love this story so much. Hope you have another 100 yrs!!
Best ski movie of the year. This is the one! Well done. Thanks.
Figured I'd watch 5 minutes, watched the whole thing. Very good.
Proud to say I've spent at least $1000 at Lahouts over the years❤ New Hampshire is my home
I am a skier, but growing up in WV, the sport came to me later in life. The footage around 9-10 minutes takes me back to my own childhood with my Polish grandmother. A ski film, but so much more! Thanks TGR.
This will be my first year skiing. So excited and this video just brought me to that next level!
hell yea dawg!
Nice man! I've been skiing for 10 years and im 13! Have an awesome season!
It’ll change your life, I always struggles to find the right hobby for me and this is it.. after the first time I fell in love :) be confident and don’t be scared to fall!
Thanks for all the encouraging comments. Let’s ski boys!!!!
What a great film. Always makes me happy to see a family business with soul still surviving in corporate America.
the people who made this did so good its like a movie
This is hands down the best ski film and story telling I've seen in a long long time. It always gives me hope when I see brands backing honest, long form story for films, and not just assembly lining cheap concepts to funnel traffic and turn profits. I'm just blown away by the work from Stept Studios and all involved here. It appears this took at least four years to film, edit, and release. That's a ton of time to sit on a project. It was well worth the wait. Thank you.
Was not ready for that gutshot at the end.
But so happy I found this. And will make the road trip to Lahouts on my next trip to home Vermont, summer or winter.
With my dad, of course.
Thank you for showcasing my home in such a beautiful way
What a story !!! I wish there was a lot more films made this way to remind us what is important in our lives instead of constant idiocy and absurdity we are bombarded with every day.
Great job and thank you very much.
New England breeds 'em different! RIP Joe Lahout Sr. Didn't even know you but was touched by this film. All love
a fantastic story....perfect for the Holiday's....the family bond is vital, needed more than ever now...Joe and all of you are an inspiration.... thank you for sharing this wonderful & touching look into the life of a true "hero" and family man...ps: we're planning a trip to the North Country for sure!
Thanks, Anthony and the Lahout Family. This is not just a great story about your Family or the North County.....this is a great, American story. In the crazy divided times, we're currently living in, we need more stories like this.
This is a great tribute to Joe Lahout Snr and the store and his story is greatly received, long may the store run, keeping it real.
RIP Joe Snr
From a nobody snowboarder in the UK.
This is a amazing tribute to a family who loved one another, cares about others and community along with appreciating the gift of the outdoors. Watching this documentary resurfaced joyful emotions from my past of learning to ski in the 70's, working in the industry, snowboarding in 80's, teaching my now adult boys who live in Colorado to ski and board, and lastly so many beautiful winter and outdoor activity memories. This movie puts into perspective that life is special, goes by quickly and can be enjoyed with practicality. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks TGR for documenting this side of snow sliding. So much of our sport is done by humble and hardy athletes, at the end of a dirt road, in far from ideal conditions. The community and shared bonds we have as mountain people is so valuable.
This is cam and Nick from stept productions
This....is...AMAZING!!!!!! Great story. THIS is what its all about!! Thank you for sharing.
GREAT story!1 Thanks for bringing it to light. As a life long dedicated skier I hear and see the same bit of history repeating itself again and again in all the great ski stories and this is one of them.
What an incredible story, told and captured so well through this film. That human connection, family ties and a love for skiing that so many of us all share. Thank you TGR!
Die hard Snowboarder here, This is bad ass. I've been working at a 40 year old family owned Shop in Park city, Utah for going on 4 seasons now. I love the history and culture so much. I'm praying this is a good season so I can enjoy many seasons to come. Vail bought the resort a few years ago and ruined everything. We are one of the only family owned shops left. P.s. This is the season yer boi gets on some Ski's. yeeewwww
Man. I grew up near Laramie, Wyoming, and my family has owned a small cabin right near the Snowy Range Ski Resort in the northern part of the Rockies in the Snowy Range (hence the name haha). This video made me so emotional. The resort is right near the town of Centennial, Wyoming, where many local businesses and families have been since I can remember. It’s those kind of people that give these special, independent, small town Ski resorts the vibrance, life, and uniqueness that I grew up around and treasure. I hope that this part of Skiing never loses its soul!
Im so happy this is where im able to ski every weekend.. Truly magical in the north country... Theres nothing else like it
BANGER OPENER. "93 years old and I was born in this apartment" Nick and Cam still bringing the 🔥
I remember the store in Littleton, NH!

I’m always encouraged to hear stories of men and woman who share their memories of the ones who have shaped them and those individuals are always solid hardworking and loyal folks. Thanks for sharing your families story.
Oh man!!! Our grand fathers were Grand!!! Thank you
See you this winter!!!
Cool video. Small world. I recognized Anthony. Met him at Kingdom trails mountain biking at a trailhead on Columbus Day weekend.
An amazing piece of film-making that encapsulated the true spirit of skiing. Thanks for making it and putting it out there!
Beautiful story , thank you.
Wishing all a good season.
RIP Mr. Joe Lahout Sr.
Love Love Love. Lahouts was my go-to. Mr. Lahout and his sons were always there.

So powerful!! Even though he’s gone, What a huge inspiration!! Put the God damn skis on and go like hell!!
I wasn’t ready to cry but man did it feel good. Goosebumps through the whole thing, makes my heart ache and burst with joy simultaneously. The North Country is my home.

Wow, what a flood of memories this inspired! Thank you so much for making and posting this. A great tribute to a great man at the heart of the "Golden Age of Skiing".

This is such a good watch! Heartwarming, real, sad, joyous and inspiring all at the same time. Well done TGR!
Great family history - love the ending track!
What a wonderful story to share. I spent my working life in ski shops and still wok in the industry after more than 30 years, the best people in the industry are people like the Lahoots. They do it for the love of the mountains. I wish them all the very best for the future generations.
Very moving film and family history
This is an outstanding film! Thanks so much...
Thank you TGR for making this beautiful video, it was truly beautiful. I have been skiing, hiking, climbing and backpacking the Whites for decades. I also have been shopping there for the same amount of times. I am a flat lander from the hills of Ma. and the Whites have always been there for me and so has Lahouts. I never knew the history and now its going to be even more special shopping there. I never purchase ski gear on line, ever. The Whites are special place and so is Lahouts, again thank you TGR
Awesome film that personifies the Heart of Skiing that is in all of us that love the sport, great work TGR !

The heart of skiing.

Fantastic 👍🏻
Franconia notch is at 44 degrees latitude. 45 degrees is the half way mark between the equator and the north pole. This technically puts Franconia notch in the south. London and Paris are much farther north.
