- Operation of the vacuum gearshifting mechanism in the automobile is explained & compared with the fish in the ocean, who are subjected to tremendous pressure caused by the weight of water above.
I wish we had this kind of explaination nowadays...
hhhhhhhhhaaaaeeee
Ah yes, vacuum driven wipers, a way to guarantee that you won't see anything whenever you go up steep hills in the rain
I'm old enough to have suffered this exact situation.
Wide open throttle on my gutless '55 Chevy pickup, then no choice but let up on the throttle (loosing my momentum), but getting a few quick swipes of the wipers.
I adore old documentries, they simplify scientific and technological things.
Good 'ol Jim Handy! Teaching us the mysteries of science and technology in our modern automobiles!
It's "Jam" Handy, but yes, I love their vids.
I LOVE THESE VIDEO
Hey isn't that Inspector Henderson from the 50s Superman series? It sure does look and sound like him.
The last dialogue was just awesome
Oh ya yaa yaa ,....... I don't get it.!
Reminds me of so many modern voters.
Robert Shayne aka Inspector Henderson isn't it?
YES! This was two years before he earned a contract with Warner Bros.(through 1946). He later freelanced at other studios, and appeared in "THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN"....and also appeared in other industrial films.
GREAT CATCH !
Ah..life before Coronavirus!
Pre-war America, before the country lost it's innocence. And so many lives....
They lost more during the Civil War
As much privacy as a gold fish bowl.
Why, if they invented power-assisted shifting, why not a power-assisted clutch? Power brakes, using the same concept, came out in the 1950s.
They do. Older Toyota Land Cruisers and some Nissan pickups have vacuum assisted clutches. Some heavy trucks use air from the air brakes. They've even designed them for motorcycles, since you have to use your left hand.
👌👌👌👌👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍

Да, удивительно что комментарии только на русском :)

The sky is blue because of all the dust up there?
And there was me thinking it was light passing through the Nitrogen molecules! Silly me! Thanks 1940.
You're wrong too. It's blue because of scattering from a combination of gasses (both O2 and N2) and aerosols, including dust, water and ice crystals, and the sensitivity of human vision.
@@straightpipediesel There's only one way you could get a like that quickly on such an obscure topic like this and that is by thumbing up your own comment.
Pathetic!
Ah...men with cool hats and cars.
We had electric motors...why not use that ?
6-volts not good and generator output poor at low speeds.
Vacuum systems were much cheaper. No motor needed, just simple air valves and a hose.
Mercedes stuck with vacuum door locks decades after Detroit went electric.
