- Car Camping | Overland - M55 Adventure Series Rooftop Tent - Freespirit Recreation Quick Set Up, Lightweight Roof Top Tent
A quick overview of the Freespirit M55 Adventure Series Rooftop Tent. This roof top tent is larger than the M49 Adventure Series or Jeep Series rooftop tent.
In general the Adventure Series and Jeep Series roof top tents from Freespirit Recreation are some of the quickest manual set up rooftop tents on the market. They are also lightweight, and stand up well to repeated use car camping and overlanding.
The M55 roof top tents have a significantly larger footprint than the M49 series and provide plenty of room for one or two people and some gear.
Hope you enjoy!
Cheers

THAT has got to be one of the BEST SITES EVER!
I saw your jeep by the basecamp too.
Really cool.👌
Lots of great info there. Really neat product. What I really noticed was the high quality of the video production itself. Stuff that is that tight on the editing takes a lot time to plan and setup and then execute. Very well done.
Thank you my friend. Very cool to hear that. I do put a lot of time into it trying to make my videos the best I can given the skills and equipment I have to work with. So it’s great to hear that it’s appreciated and noticed.
Cheers my friend!
Ever thought of using that radiant foil on the inside of the tent as insulation? Packs down nice and flat....could cut the sections and tape them into pre shaped panels...maybe stick one under the mattress too. Just a thought. Cheers
I have thought about it a bit. But your idea of having them pre cut in shapes that you could stick in the panels is something I hadn’t thought of. But that might be a good option for longer stays in the cold.
I really like that rooftop tent design. Looks sturdy and quick to setup. Nice review.
For sure. I’ve used quite a few different ones and for those exact reasons I really like this one. Cheers!
Very nice set-up! Amazingly quick.
Definitely one of the high points of the rooftop tents is how easy they are to set up and take down. Cheers!
YES zipperless! This is why I’m considering one of these tents! I can’t stand the zippers on most RTTs out there, specially if you have lifted vehicle. Great video!
Nice tent, I like the extra room it has for gear.
Yeah me too. Really been enjoying having that extra space.
hello Casey, I discover your chain thanks to primal outdoor and I find it fantastic. where many people see the United States of the bad eye because of his policy, me, the United States is the big spaces, the jeeps, the music, Bruce Springsteen and Elvis, Oregon and Colorado, John Wayne. Then live America!i live on Bastogne belgium
For sure my friend. We have our share of problems but it’s still a great place to be!!! Thanks for the support!
Very nice roof top tent this.
Yes I could see you and Survival Lilly together in this tent.
Me too! I wonder if she can picture that? If you talk to her tell her if she comes out here I’ll take really good care of her (hopefully she enjoys Mountain House meals)! Lol
I'm trying to convince her.
Really nice man! 👍👍🇺🇸
Thank you!
I hope they gave it to you for free because you give WAY more info on it then they do on their website. And on their YT site they are time lapsed...Hows that make sense? "Its fast set up but we will show it time lapsed to make it look faster." Nice review and vid CW...
I LOVE THIS TENT!
Looks really nice. I like that bigger tent.
Yeah I’m really enjoying having that extra room. Cheers my friend!
“That extra 8” makes a lot of difference” that’s what she said!
Ha! Nice one....
Hey somebody did pay attention to every word right!
I was considering one of these because it packs down so small,
but then realized it has no actual floor, and the brackets weren't as robust as some others I've seen.
Its a cool setup, but your then limited to the jeep area. If you're like me, and want to get on the trail, you would have to bring a separate tent or hammock. But if your just staying near the car,
great setup.
You always have an Nice Setup for your Jeep. I Like It. IF the suggestion that gundog4314 made, that sounds like it would be a good way to stay warmer in the tent. I like his idea alot.
Yeah I think I”m going to try experimenting with that idea. I like it!
I like the tri layer tent.
I like this one best so far.
Yeah me too ;-). Of all the ones I’ve had and used I like this one the best so far. I’m really enjoying having the extra space to work with. Cheers!
*UPDATE* The owners reached out to me personally to make things right. Couldn't be happier!
I've been overlanding since before Covid. I currently have a 3yr old Roofnest Hardshell RTT. I've gotten my money's worth, but the quality sucks. Even though I had a protective cover, the shell started cracking after 1yr. Roofnest's support sent us the equivalent of "Tough-as-Nails” to seal it ourselves (as opposed to shipping it back for a replacement). So then I thought, to hell with the cover and I sprung to have it Line-X coated. Still it continued to crack. With spring here I want a replacement and I started looking at their competitors and landed on Freespirit. Although the build quality looks nice, I'll never know how it holds up because after a month (March 8th to April 8th) of dealing with their new sales person (I won't list names) and trying to buy one for myself, they have been playing games and pushed me to take my business elsewhere. I drove 2hrs there and 2hrs home to check out their showroom and products, I wanted to make a deal then and there but the salesperson said he couldn't without the owner. So then they started the back and forth via email (let me check with the owner) until the March 10% sale was over (so I missed that), then, he (salesperson) changed the purchase package to get me to pay for things that I didn't want and was not part of the agreed upon purchase. Ultimately I had to tell them I was no longer interested in dealing with their company. Of course no response to my pleasantly worded dissatisfaction. Wish I could get in touch with the owner directly to see if the problem is the salesperson, or company culture (but email and calls funnel through the sales person). If anyone questions the legitimacy of my claim I am happy to forward all email correspondence with their sales department.
The Tri Layer Skin would help with the cold , but is costly to some degree. I understand packing space is low for some, but I wonder if say, 1/2 inch foam insulation board precut to the correct sizes for top sides and even under the mat would work. If one were smart they could use glued on Velcro to hold pieces in place, not to the tent but to each other to be self supporting as well as having window holes cut into the panels to be pulled out or pushed back into place. There is a You-Tuber named Paul Eakon I think or close to that, that makes portable hard sided structures from the stuff that work just fine. Search for foam board tents and he should pop up and you will see what I'm talking about. Just an idea in a world full of thoughts.
OK Paul Elkins is his name and I searched foam board tents and he did pop up. Some of his ideas would lend themselves well to car camping tent users for sure I feel. Nice rig you have there also.
I saw some of those rigid foam shelters recently at a campground I drove by. Seemed like a really interesting idea.
Looks awesome and huge compared to your M49. I really would like to get a RTT for my Jeep TJ, but I’m going to have to do a lot of research before pulling the trigger. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video. Very thorough review - anyone considering a purchase would be well-informed. Thanks
Thanks my friend!
Watching some of your older stuff now, haha.
Great video. Just saying hi bud. How about doing a bug out with your EDC and a small bug out bag . Your awesome. My wife and I watch your videos all the time .:)
Ha! Awesome my friend. That’s really cool to hear. Yeah I can definitely do a video like that. That would be a fun one. I’ll put it on my list. It might be a little while before I get to it but probably by early spring. Cheers! Thanks for the support!
Great overview thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Looks like a beautiful area!! If you are ever out east we have to hook up. Enjoy your jeep
Where about are you back east? I love traveling to different areas and often times having a contact or someone to meet up with is all it takes to give me a reason to go someplace ;-)
I'm in Western Virginia. I have a place in the mountains. Love it there.
That ladder is amazing. Can you just buy the ladder?
Nice setup. Thank you
Thank you!
Hi coyote works, what roof rack(s) “system” are you using on your hard top to carry this tent? Thanks.
Nice tent, unlike the CVT or Smithybuilt which are a folding floor tent that makes them thicker like driving with a brick on top.
Exactly! These ones I’ve been running are lower profile and don’t have quite the wind resistance either. My Jeep is already shaped like a brick. I don’t need to stack another brick on top of it if I can help it.
Wow! I was just getting ready to order the M49!! Lol!
I like the larger footprint and additional space for the heater and gear. Seems that I will have to change my order!
Wondering if this one has the same type of mattress as the M49?
Also, can this model be mounted so that the entry opening is on the drivers side? I understand that the awning on your drivers side would prevent that.
Thanks for sharing!
Yeah it’s a tough choice. But I would seriously consider going the route of the M55 if you plan on sleeping two in it very often, or if you just want some extra room for running your stove and having a decent amount of extra gear up there with you. I generally like to stay as small as possible with tents simply because it is more efficient to control the temperature in a smaller space, and I’ like to keep weight down generally speaking. But I’ve been using this M55 for a few trips now and I’m really enjoying having that extra room. And I’m running solo all the time in it.
Cheers!
good video
Thanks my friend!
Have a great 2018. Good review and keep doing what you are doing.
Thanks my friend. You too. Happy New Year!
It’s a great set up! Please let me know where you got the rack to attach to your Jeep, that the tent mounts to. Thanks for the overview and enjoyable videos! Griffin
The rack is the Rhino Rack Backbone 3 bar system. It’s been an awesome rack system. Hella strong and pretty light. Cheers!
Nice tent. I have to get one soon. It's a coin toss right now, either my 3" lift kit or the CVT one with annex I've been wanting in coyote tan. :) I hope my tax return this year will cover one or the other. Lol.
Ha! Yeah seems like I’m always in the same boat. Now I’m deciding between front and rear bumpers, or lift and tires. I’m close to having enough saved up for one of the two... But not both. So I have to pick. Man I hate having to choose!
But if you do, or are planning to do any amount of camping out of it I would spring for the rooftop tent. That was the very first upgrade I made to my Jeep. The easy set up, comfort, etc. of the rooftop tent just adds a whole new level of enjoyment to camping out of the vehicle for me.
Either way good luck with your next upgrades!
If I could do it all over again I'd go with a lift first. Can't wait to see your build as it comes along. Take care!
Hi Coyote Works! I love your channel and content! Thank you for the work and effort you put into each video. Question for you . . . you used to have the Freespirit Adventure M55 rooftop tent and now you have the Freespirit High Country 55 tent. I'm going to get one of these and am debating on which one to get. The Adventure version is not as tall when closed and a little lighter. The High Country gets you a little more room inside. Since you've had real-world experience with both, what you find are the pros and cons of each. Do you have a strong preference of one over the other? Thanks!
Very nice 👍
Thanks my friend!
Great video! Another sweet tent. Can you feel a difference in the way your jeep drives with the extra weight on top? And do you think it may affect your vehicles ability to navigate steep hills or slopes by making it more top heavy?
Hi Gerret. Happy New Year! The extra weight of the tent is barely noticeable. Definitely not an issue off road. I feel like when I first went from nothing on the roof (just stock hard top) to putting the rack and rooftop tent on it I could feel a little tiny bit of a difference cornering on sharper curves at highway speed. But it’s such a small difference I don’t even feel like it’s a factor.
I've never liked soft shell RTT because it's a giant brick on your roof and kills your mpg but this one intrigues me as it's kinda a hybrid. While it's not a hard shell tent nor as fast to setup as one it is very fast for a soft shell and the footprint while packed is smaller similar in dimensions to a hard shell so it shouldn't impact your mpg as much.
You just hit all the reasons I picked this one. I’ve had several others but this one has a lower profile, sets up fast, and in my opinion is about the best option in a soft shell rooftop tent.
Thanks for the reply
For sure my friend!
Nice tent, I like it. ^^
Thank you!
Good video how does it do in wind , looking for a roof top tent not sure Wich route to go , are these tents alot low profile than some of the others to want through off my xterra balance to much
looks good works great..
Thanks Jerry!
Bonjour. Tu n'as pas peur de tomber en panne au milieu de nulle part ?
Hi Casey. Been looking at a few RTT options and really appreciate the info, great job!! Being a jeep owner, I also like the extra jeep insignia. How has it held up in high winds and is there an annex option. Thanks again for the info!!
It’s held up great in high winds. Like any tent it is a bit noisy in high wind but no issues with it failing at all. I recently switched to a little larger version of the exact same tent. Between the tow of them I hav a LOT of nights in them in everything from snowstorms, to wind, to rainstorms. They have done just fine in every condition I’ve had them in.
Cheers!
Thanks Casey!! Definitely considering the 55 size, which I believe is what you upgraded to. Thanks again for the info!!
You should have a race with primal outdoors on tent setup
Ha! That wouldn’t even be a challenge. I’d easily win ;-) Lol
Same tent
Nice RTT. How do you compare your Jeep to the old Xterra?
The Jeep has more power, full locking front and rear diffs, and a little bit more room in the interior. So it has a little more capability and room for gear. But that Xterra was a great rig, and pretty darn capable as well. Honestly there isn’t a lot of practical difference between the two for what I do. But I really just like the Jeep a bit better. I’ve always just liked the Jeeps.
Cheers my friend!
Thanks for your response and comparison. It is appreciated and valued.
I have to get one
Nice review! You have a very nice rig. What area are you in?
Thanks my friend. I’m in Central Oregon. The high desert!
What brand/model is your roof rack? I love it’s not the tubular ones that goes all the way to the hood
Just ordered mine...looking forward to putting it to use. Any updates on your replacement rig?
Awesome my friend. You will love it. Been a great tent for me. I just picked up another Jeep. I’ll be doing an overview video on it soon!
Do you prefer the free spirit tent or the clam shell kind like the CVT?
Nice rig Coyote. Do you leave it attached to your jeep all the time? Do the tents get worn from wind/weather? If not, how do you remove and store the tent?
I leave mine on all the time. It holds up fine. I ran my first rooftop tent for a little over two years without ever taking it off the top of the vehicle and it was still in great shape after all that time. The Jeep M49 I ran for about 9 months without ever taking it off the rig and no sign of any wear or issues. This M55 I”ve only had on for about a month but it’s made of similar materials so I don’t see it being an issue.
I use mine so often it just doesn’t really make sense for me to ever take it off. But there is no reason you couldn’t. You would want a second person to help you but they are extremely easy to undo from the roof rack. You just unscrew a few knobs by hand and then you can slide the tent off the rack and set it down.
Cheers my friend!
What is the difference between this tent and Cvt mt. Thielsen.
Same channels on Amazon right now for $900 off-grid Raptor series
I'm wondering if there is any company which exports this tent to Japan...
I really need it :)))
Hey Coyote, great video I was just ordering one today! What's your roof rack system I notice rhino rack, whats the model/setup you're using? Thanks!
Congrats. You’ll love it. I’m running the Rhino Rack 3-Bar Backbone System with the three Vortex bars. They make a 2-bar version of the Backbone system as well but it will somewhat limit your mounting options for certain rooftop tents. If you want to tell me which rooftop tent you are getting I can tell you if you would be okay with the 2-bar system or not. But in my mind the 3-bar system just gives you so many more options it just makes the most sense.
I ordered the M55 Jeep edition, with the free awning. I was considering the Gobi stealth roof rack but its $1,500+! What did the 3-bar system run you? Also did the awning come with the jeep cover as in your video?
Awesome. You’ll love it!. And that’s a great deal getting the awning with it. Between the tent and the awning it makes a really solid, easy to set up camp.
Yeah the Gobi Stealth rack is another one that I do really like but I don’t have any experience with it. I think the Rhino Rack Backbone system with 3-bars runs somewhere around $1000. If I remember right it is a bit less expensive than the Gobi. But don’t quote me on that, iit’s been a while since I was researching them.
I looked at purchasing the Rhino Rack directly from Rhino but I ended up getting it quite a bit cheaper through a local roof rack dealer/installer. I would call Rhino Racks USA and get a quote from them, but also check any local rack installers for their prices before you purchase it.
Nice review, can you tell me the make/model of your parka?
Thanks my friend. It’s a Mountain Hardware Gortex Storm Shell. I’ve had it for a few years so I’m not sure if they still make that model or not. But I also have an Arc’teryx storm shell that I really like as well. Those are probably the two best built and toughest storm shells that I’ve used.
Cheers
wonder why they choose a telescoping ladder, heard it is easier to jam when dealing with dirt...
Actually I’ve had better luck with the telescoping ladder. My old sliding on used to jam up all the time when it got sand or dirt in it. I haven’t had any issues with the telescoping one. Cheers!
So what will this do to the noise imside a JLU at highway speeds?
Another question - If you find yourself in a HURRY, how quick can you get the roof tent down and get driving? Thanks again
I can have the tent pulled down and be driving in about 5 minutes. A little less if I just fold down the tent and don’t take the time to put the cover on it. But without the cover on it I wouldn’t be able to hit highway speeds. But it would be fine for just 4x4 roads or cross country driving at slower speeds.
Is that a rooftop tent?
Where did you get the gas can? It looks really convenient.
I got it from Rotopax. Actually ordered the can and the mounts directly from their website. It’s been a great, handy way to carry some extra fuel. Cheers!
ما شاء الله لا قوة إلا بالله
I like to throw the cover under the vehicle- (right next to the 1200* catalytic converter and hope it does not melt a hole in it..) lol
How come you got rid of your CVT? Did you have problems with it?
No problems with it. Just wanted a model that was a little bit lighter and faster to set up and take down. The CVT being the clam shell style also ends up being a few inches taller when it’s stowed and the version I went with now sits a little lower on top of the jeep keeping my overall height down a bit.
you know parked in the right place it wood make a good deer blind
I think so. And a darn comfortable one!
What are your thoughts on the ARB Simpson 3 RT Tent?
Well, I’m partial to the Freespirit Tents and I really like the model I’m running now (M55 Adventure Series). But having said that everything ARB makes seems to be well designed and great quality. So I would guess their rooftop tent would be solid. That tent design is very similar to the Freespirit Original Series and I’ve used a tent of that design for over 2 years. It’s a great tent design.
What is the yellow tri-pod solar thing?
It’s the Readylight from www.gofsr.com . It’s my overhead camp light and it has 4 additional detachable “pod” lights that I use in my tent and around camp. It’s also a charging station for my phones/tablets/camera batteries etc. Great piece of kit!
Take a shot every time he says “roof top tent”.
What roof rack are you using under this tent?
I'm running the Rhino Rack - Backbone System with their Vortex Bars. Been a good system!
Coyote Works The Vortex line only has 88 Lb rating! How does that fare with the weight of Tent and potentially 2 people?
The cover is too much fuss especially packing up on a tall vehicle.
$1695.00 for this tent.
need to get a jeep first
For sure! But you can put them on almost anything. Cheers!
So did you get any form of compensation to make this presentation ? I think this is important to disclose in any product review
efibendor1 - did YOU receive any compensation for the 3rd party videos posted on YOUR channel? You are after all promoting the many businesses by posting for replay - and - you have subscribers...
I don’t receive any compensation from them. This video is my opinion and overview of the product. I’m not under any obligation (nor would I have any reason) to express anything other than my honest overview of the product. I’m the one out there sleeping in it. Seems like I”m going to be the one to suffer if it doesn’t work well ;-)
