First thing I noticed too. I work in dementia care and no matter what stage they are in I always address them with their preferences, mr. Mrs. Dr., reverend. I also tell them what I’m doing, and although they probably don’t known what I’m actually saying, they understand I’m making them a part of it, which brings them comfort and makes doing care much less traumatic for both of us.

To say this how the doctor speaks to her before she treats her, we were actually consulted to do it as emergency responders too. They called it "silent consent" so if you are to help the person you ask their permission even if they do not respond.
One it is so you never truly know if they can hear you so they won't get anxious that someone is over them and two it helps you against legal issues especially for us who are not certified doctors. We identify ourselves as emergency responders so people around us and the patient themselves will not sue us for touching them or for anything that might occur to the patient on his way to the hospital.

I knew a woman when I was younger who lived in our neighborhood whose 17 year olddaughter who was in a vegetative state after an illness destroyed her brain, she was abused by a caregiver in her home while her mother was at work.
The pregnancy wasn’t found till she was quite far along, more than halfway, she didn’t really show or have a big belly… the drs wanted to terminate because babies of coma patients don’t do well, babies actually need the sounds of a mother talking and life outside the body to correctly develop neurologically… baby ended up being born by csection a little early and she didn’t have any problems she was just tiny. This woman got to care for her daughter and her granddaughter and the carer that assaulted her only got 2 years in jail. She moved out of state to be closer to family cause she said she was never going to let a stranger watch her daughter again.
I think about that alot. Especially now that I have a disabled kid of my own… at least my boy can walk and talk. But she was just a kid, and god knows how often he had assaulted her and he only got 2 years in jail for it…

Well he always stole and we didn’t really care until it was something big and important to my brother. So their friendship died. Years go on and for faults of my own I was in jail and I see Zach in jail too! And I was like “why are you here?” And he said “Over smoking pot” and I believed him until I was going back to my cell and the officer asked if i knew him and I explained how, he tells me that he is not in for pot, that he would sexually assault his sister whom has Down syndrome, and his mother let it happen. I used to work taking care of people with developmental disabilities. We rescued a LOT of them from institutions, specifically Polk Institute in PA. Almost every single person we got out of there has STDs from being molested. Males with Downs who now have hep C. One of my ladies needed a hysterectomy due to the rampant STDs that took over her body. Especially those who are non verbal because they can't say anything. But even the ones who are able to speak were STILL abused because nobody would listen to them, or they were too scared to say something, or might not have the right words to say what happened to them. Absolutely disgusting. As if they didn't have enough trauma to deal with after being dumped in an institution by their families because they were different.
