That's why Kelvin was called into a hearing by the government and that's why we're seeing the arena go. Same as with free trade ages ago the threat was to bottom line; here fines from the UK gaming commission and back then by visa and MasterCard disabling card payments on Jagex products.
That's fair, to be honest I haven't heard about the legal troubles. I don't have anything against casinos, so morally I could care less, but if it affects their bottom line then I understand why they'd change the game accordingly.
I believe something similar happened with the Well of Goodwill in OSRS and that's why we never saw it again. Jagex was donating $1 per 1M GP added to the well and the British Government used that against them in court. It basically came down to if Jagex put a monetary value on OSRS GP and players could freely gamble said GP on a 50/50 whip stake, then players were inadvertently gambling real money in an illegal casino.
Never went to the duel arena, not even once. Too many scams going on and even if there weren’t scams, I have an addictive personality. I think it’s a pretty cool idea, but people will find a way to ruin anything. Love the content, keep it up! Have a good evening.

i used to stake in rs3, but it wasn't exactly a 50/50 thing (no not scamming). there was just a different culture on world 2 since the people were eoc staking, the outcome relied for a substantial part on skill and who executed their abilitys better. it made it feel less like gambling, kinda like you would stake 50m in an osrs brid fight with food.
Naw i always had fun a duel arena. Ill miss the good old 2005 duel arena days, super fun back then, more of a place to test new armors and weps with friends or random people.

As a kid when I first got into runescape, and was completely clueless of how to play the game... I spend countless hours at the duel arena just friendly dueling my real life friends, in game friends, strangers... This was back when I literally gave out my password to somebody, because I was stuck inside the maze random event LOL. So on my second account I just spent most of my time playing castle wars, but mainly the duel arena because people would just ice barrage and own me in CW.. I guess what I'm saying is, I understand why they're changing/removing (haven't finished the vid) it, but man am I gonna be sad if it's fully removed. I haven't even really been back there since I came back to Osrs recently. Might have to go find some friendly duels for old time sake 😕

The duel arena was an unregulated casino which was the major issue aside from whether we think a casino should be in the game. None of the most basic protections that casinos are regulated with were in place and that allowed children to become addicted and fueled adult addictions with nothing to stop them from draining their actual banks, which normal casinos are required to do. It's not an issue of people choosing to partake or not, it's an issue of zero regulation and zero accountability, with jagex just pretending that a casino is not what they made.
What's the end goal of this change is what I want to know. Sure if Jagex is hit with operating without a "license" then I see that, but I REALLY hope people aren't hoping this will remove or even put a dent into RWT or scamming. Sure the Duel Arena is a cess pool, but I will tell you first hand there's already ways around RWT and scamming that are even more disgusting. This is, AT MOST a band-aid.

While I can't say that I agree with your perspective on how the duel arena helped to mitigate more gambling addictions than it caused, I definitely agree that Jagex has done relatively little to remedy the situation over the past 17 years, and you're 100% right about PKing and even the potential GE tax having a higher percentage sink than the duel arena, which also has a lower house edge than something like American Roulette at around 5%, or an inexperienced player sitting down at a blackjack table, which is around 1.5-2%.
I agree with what you said about Jagex letting things become a huge deal before dealing with it. and it's kinda weird because they have a polling system so they can know what the community wants but at the same time it took so long to put out such small updates and they make even less difference because of this time, as you said
i loved the duel arena, i needed some gp to buy gear so i went in with 5m worked it up to 40m. i had bought new gear like fury, berserker ring bandos etc. happy for a time but as i levelled up i needed more expensive gear which was pretty much unattainable through normal gameplay grinding gp would take forever. at this point i was already getting bored with the game with it being too time consuming etc, so i decided to sell everything i had and stake my bank. if i won happy days i get to buy my new gear and enjoy the game for a little longer, if i lost happy days i finally have an excuse to quit. so a win win scenario really. i ended up losing it and quit the game for good. never felt better, i havent come back since.
1: if nobody falls for scams, there will be no scams.. 2:30 fueling the bots that scam 2: at the end of the day, gambling is still gambling. even if it isnt real money, you are still spending months/years accumulating that money so its kinda hard to justify. 3: yeh i agree Jagex did a crap job regulating the duel arena over the years but I imagine the new 'engaging content' probably has something to do with these new 'preset' rules that were just added to the duel arena.. so I wouldnt say that its the worst time to add them. His opponent had a rapier in his inventory, so when the duel started, he equipped the rapier which is naturally a lot stronger than the whip. The way you normally prevent this is to check the opponents inventory by clicking on a little tab in the duel menu. He completely forgot to check said tab, so he didn’t realize the opponent had a rapier. If your opponent has a rapier, hasta, inquisitors mace, etc, in their inventory, always cancel the duel. You will be scammed.

Duel arena is bad, there's no age requirements, there was no gambling limits, and the return to player was 99%> it's worse than normal casinos.
