I made a set with six extra beads of different color on the lower strand that way I can use it to keep track of miles as well as kilometers. If I'm using klicks, I just use the first 9 beads then pull down the top bead. If I'm using miles, I use all 15 on the bottom. I got the 4th, 8th and 12th beads, a slightly different color to keep track of 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of a mile.
A few tips on this -- first, if you're using 550, gut it..Meaning pull all the strands out to where only the sheath remains. Instead of trying to feed the paracord sheath through the beads (it's annoying/hard af), do the following: Take a strand of gut and place the midway point of the gut at the midway point of the paracord sheath you're using(after you've tied the first knot), folded over. You're basically temporarily attaching the gut to the shealth. At that point, put the beads on the gut, and slide them down over the sheath. It's significantly easier. I know this may not be easy to follow without pics, but the idea is to use the gut to align the bead onto the sheath and slide over to it like a bridge. Hope this makes sense somehow.
$7 for 50 feet of 550 para cord and $1.50 for 500 beads and real easy to make! Made a few sets for all my packs this way a set is always with me. Thanks Corporal
I made my set out of glow in the dark beads that allow me to use them well into the dark without issue. Not terribly bright but bright enough and can easily be hidden away if needed.
I finally got around to making a set of these. I first learned of these things from this channel a few years back. With my set, I made the middle bead in the lower 9 a different color, to make for a quick identification of half a kilometer.
I know this video is kind of old, but a tip if you can't get the cord to feed through the beads: use zip ties instead. That's how I've always made them. Tie the zip ties snug against the paracord but leave enough wiggle room so they can move up and down as needed. Cut the excess zip tie close to the ratchet part, avoiding sharp angles. This style done me well whilst compelting recon courses in the Australian Army, so highly recommend.
I used 550 chord and 5mm beads.. I had to gut the chord and burn the ends to make it fit though.. It’s really nice because it’s a tight enough fit so that there’s a little resistance and beads don’t easily slide down on accident..
Corporal, you are a good teacher; many people, even experienced teachers, do not show *clearly* what they are demonstrating. What you're showing is also very useful. Thanks!
I find it easier to knot the 2 ends first then use a thin string at the loop to basically train the beads on. Always love checking out your vids man and rewatching past vids are even better
Thanks for the simple instructions. Breaking these skills down into easily accessible pieces is your gift. And thanks for the inspiration to get outside and get back into the woods.
Hey man. Just wanted to say; I just discovered your channel, and I love it. Excellent work man. Keep it up. So many great tips and tricks that I've never seen on other outdoor/bushcraft channels. Thanks!
Great video! On my last outing on the AT I lost a set of ranger beads and this tutorial will help me make two sets...one for my bushcraft pack and one for a day hike pack. Thank you!
In ARS we made ours without using beads, we made double Clovis hitches and burned the ends together. The Clovis hitches took the place of the beads, you can tie them to whatever tension you want and your ranger beads are 100% quite and don’t rattle on anything
I make these using Walmart supplies, then use them to hold luggage tag on my suit cases they are better then the cheap crap that fails after one trip that come with the luggage tags they go on every travel bag and backpack.
Great job Corporal! I saw your video about ploting a route using compass; any chance you make another one combined with using the ranger beads to measure your distance crossed so you know when you are back on original track after you circumvent the lake. Point is that maybe fog appeared and you cant see the original orienteer you planned to use to start going back to main course.
Very informative this was a big help. I need those for the Pathfinder basic class. Most of the skills I practice on a regular basis. Now I can practice navigation too THANKYOU!!
That's easier than I thought. Love those skull beads. I found a bag full at Goodwill for $2.00, must have been 3 dozen, but they were erasers. I doubt they'd last as long as plastic or wood.
I made my own ranger beads with beads that have letters on them. I personalized it so it spells out my full name. It took 15 beads so I put the extras on so that I can go 6.9 kilometers total.
Yeah, pick up some pebbles to keep count if you don't have ranger beads. In a survival situation maybe that's all you have. Still, I like to think that if I have a compass and topo map on me, I'll also have my ranger beads.
Hi Corporal, I've been enjoying and learning alot from your videos lately. Quick question: Why only 4 beads for the 1000 meter increment side? Considering you have a loop at the top and loose strains at the bottom, the direction is always clear. So why does this side only go up to 4? Why not simply do 9x9 to maximize the distance you can use this tool for before having to do some sort of mark?
Outstanding video lesson as always Corporal Kelly, but just curious , i clearly understand why there are 9 beads on the bottom half, representing each 100 meters, but why only 4 beads on top each representing 1000 meters for a total of 4000 meters , why not 5 beads or or even 10, ?
Hey all, I finally gave up on double strand 550 (even gutted) but single strand works great and still seems to have the resistance against sliding. Time will tell.
Just a question... is there a reason that 4000 meters was picked as the distance to track on a bead system? Also what size pony bead did you use or do you suggest. I have read some use 5mm... would the 6x9mm work?
Once the 4 beads on top are down, what do you do next? As in if you travel beyond 4,000 meters how do you keep track? Or is the idea that by the time you travel 4,000 meters you should be safe somewhere, or turn back and return to where you started? That is something I never understood and would like to learn.
Pony beads are what you want. They are traditionally bigger with a bigger hole. Don’t confuse them with crow beads which run smaller. You can find them in any Joanne fabric store in the notions aisle.
Try using zip ties instead of beads. Just tighten enough so they snug against the cord, then cut the excess off close to the ratchet part. Has worked well for me in the past
+Poi159 It is already posted, this video was a 2.0. I reposted it because someone was using it to make money so I deleted the video. Thanks for watching
These pace beads, some decent compass skills and a topographical map and you'll never be lost. Are you going to do a topo-map guide or how to tell direction without a compass video? (I don't need it but would love to see you make one of each of those. Love your videos.)
So been watching a few of your video's and I got to say I love them great info and more importantly the way its laid out its no fuss no muss get right to the info we need. I do have a question on this subject, instead of counting paces or steps wouldn't it be easier to use a stop watch? I mean you travel in direction Y for Time X.
Thought I shoot you a reply since it's been a couple of months. The way we use ranger beads is we measure how many paces it takes us to walk 100m over different types of terrain with various loads on our back. If you are walking 100m on flat easy terrain, it takes less paces to complete the distance. When walking uphill, over close country with 90lbs of gear on your back, you need more paces to navigate 100m. We keep a log of the different conditions and how many paces are needed to traverse 100m to use as a reference later. Using time to navigate works fine on water or in the air, but during land navigation, different terrians take longer to travel depending on the difficulty of movement. By counting steps, you can get pretty close to accurately measuring how far you have travelled after a certain amount of paces. This is especially important when moving 'tactically', as there are frequent stops between paces needed to ensure security. Also of note, when moving in teams, there is always two people counting paces, just to confirm that the distant travelled has an acceptable degree of accuracy. Apologies if this has already been explained; however, this was how we used to navigate in the Australian army. With a bit of practice, you can become extremely accurate using these methods
@@JT-Lucky-80 thanks! Ib was about to ask about how to know when 100m has been walked. Thanks for explaining it! (I'll also go check out Corporal's video)
I purchased pony beads at wal-mart. Cant seam to the doubled paracord through. Atwood 7 strand paracord sold on self reliance outfitter. What brand of paracord and/or beads? Is the paracord gutted?
Try using zip ties instead of beads. You can tighten then enough to move up and down, than cut off the excess near the ratchet part. This method has always worked well for me

Five on top makes much more sense to me. I'd be having to stop to try and do math. LOL. Five down, 3 miles.
Yeah I put 5 on top too.

Hey all, I finally gave up on double strand 550 (even gutted) but single strand works great and still seems to have the resistance against sliding. Time will tell.
You used corn beads instead of pony beads.
Done a lot of hiking but kinda new on the navigation thing... How do you when you've traveled a 100m?
Pace beads made, just need to establish a pace count now. I’m thinking a school running track should ave a measured 100 metres. 😀
I was waiting for this one : ) tnx, good to go as usual.
Thank you
did you choose a maximum of 4.900m., for a particular reason?
Just a question... is there a reason that 4000 meters was picked as the distance to track on a bead system? Also what size pony bead did you use or do you suggest. I have read some use 5mm... would the 6x9mm work?
The same principle as Chinese Abacus calculator.

stated in the video
How big is the whole in the beads?
I can’t seem to find any bigger than 4mm and can’t fold the 550 Paracort in half to get it in the hole.
Same boat here. Thought they were all the same size and ordered some on Amazon but they're too small
Pony beads are what you want. They are traditionally bigger with a bigger hole. Don’t confuse them with crow beads which run smaller. You can find them in any Joanne fabric store in the notions aisle.
Just gut your paracord. Works fine.
I took and carefully drilled the hole a bit bigger in the poney beads. Worked great then.
@@janedavis4793 in Walmart as well and in some dollar tree stores
I pretty much only start caring at about 5km... so im curious about the limit of 9. Do advanced troops use a third tier?
So military personnel actually are taking the time to count their steps while traveling?
I had to Google if the US military uses the metric system, now I know :)
Great video looking forward to the next one........
+Grumpy Guy A lot more to come
Before finding the cente of your para cord, do you remove the seven center strands of nylon from your para cord?
Kalvin Noble no
Nicholas Do Vito are you sure? tried this myself couldn't fit pony beads on two strands of ungutted paracord
I always pull out the inner strands. Only way it works for my pony beads, and there's still enough resistance for the beads.
I have a bag of skull beads I bought to make lanyards so I know what ill be doing after work today.
Try using zip ties instead of beads. Just tighten enough so they snug against the cord, then cut the excess off close to the ratchet part. Has worked well for me in the past
Looking forward to a pace count!

Don't forget a writing implement and some water-resistant paper to take good notes.
I used thing string that I flemmished twist and cut bambo for the beads.
7 years ago. Wow.
Have you made a vlog on how to properly sharpen a survival knife and axe?
May i ask why there is so much space between beads and knots?
Yup

Perhaps there was one little step left out...Strip the 7 strands out save one strand to thread the beads.
I have a rookie question...how did you get your cord ends tight enough to fit thru the beads?
buy large pony beads
Awesome Videos! But I'm to old to learn the metric system, I was raised on inches, feet, yards and miles not meters. keep the vides coming..
