I had a smaller dump truck rated 32,000 pounds. I’d use that to pick up an 9 foot Christmas Tree. I owned a Kenworth too. Little RV trailer my cat little 400 probably get 10 mpg be nothing to pull that
A car, a motorcycle, and a huge 5th wheel trailer . . . where’s the boat?!?!? 😂 😊 When you work hard you can afford the toys and have the time to enjoy them! Thank you all for sharing! ❤
We wondered about the dynamics of this hitch system, but knew nothing about it. Although we have learned more after showcasing his set up and producing the video. Thank you for commenting and we wish you well!
Love his rig! Would like to take my motorcycle with me when I go, just have to figure out the best way that works for me. Thanks for sharing your video with us!
So glad you enjoyed the video Ramona! I (Glynn) miss my motorcycle and wish I could have it for some of the epic locations we've stayed. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Wishing you well!
It’s not only about having the commercial tow rig. Tires/ brakes/ oil, etc all lasts 5x longer than a 1 ton dually. Better vision, better braking, and more power when needed. This is the only way to go if you wanna full time and move your rig at least occasionally. The Maintanance savings and safety outweigh the mpg loss in my eyes.
The side to side as you call it happens with air ride suspension of the truck. I use mine on my kenworth. If it breaks I just get the frame kit put on. But you are going to have frame flex with anything you use.
Nice rig. We have one, too, and we get 9 mpg. MPG depends upon the engine HP and torque, transmission, differentials gear ratio, drive tires diameter, and of course, weight of the rig (including the trailer). With HDTs, you can have all the power, braking and comfort possible. These trucks are no wider than a 1-ton dually pickup, but of course are much taller. So they do look rather foreboding. However, the safety of these trucks for the driver and passengers is unmatched in any other RV rig. I've seen a video of a fully-loaded semi-truck driver crashing into a overpass abutment and once extracted by the firemen, walked away with only minor scratches and bumps! Sure the semi and its trailer were totaled, but he survived virtually unscathed. And, I've seen too many videos of Class A RV drivers being carried away in body bags after a crash. A little glass and Sheetmetal just doesn't provide protection in a head-on crash. Concerning the large size and getting into campgrounds, Google Earth is helpful to see the size of the sites, entry and exit angles, low tree limbs and the campground roads. A bit of a challenge, to be sure. But a great traveling experience. And suggest to any HDTer, get an air ride RV hitch such as an ET from popuphitch.com/our-products/the-et-air-ride-5th-wheel-hitch/ . These hitches (since they have air bags) will take the added stress (from "chucking") off the RV 5th wheel trailer and prevent premature frame failure. Expensive hitches, but worth it to not ruin you trailer or you trips. I have one on my HDT.
Totally agree Marty! The high level of safety brings it to a whole new level. If we didn't live on BLM land and forest roads, an HDT would be my first choice. Thank you so much for commenting and we wish you well!
Nice Pete. Were you surprised how narrow the cab was? Last truck I owned was a 2000 model. The crane I'm currently operating is getting a new DPF (emissions filter) which will cost around $10,000! That's why he was happy about having a pre-emissions truck.
Hey Bryant. Yes, the cab was smaller than we would have thought. And Holy ears, that's a lot of dough for a DPF filter!!! Totally makes sense why Don liked his earlier model. Thanks so much for commenting and we wish you well!
What a beautiful rig. I wonder what he has for a prime mover in that? There is a fella around where I used to live that built his own rig.... Yes, home made.. For the purpose specifically for towing 5th wheel campers for a dealership network. its foundation was a mid 80s dodge 1 ton pickup and he used a chopped up cab from a mid 80s Mack. So it was a 3/4 scale tractor lol. Rather comical looking, but it did the job. Underneath though the engine, transmission et al was all normal pickup stuff. So the 5.3 cummins or something along that line.
Semi suspension is far too stiff (stock) for that RV. I can't imaging the amount of shock thats being transferred to the RV going down the road, especially from a tandem rear semi. They make an adapter that goes between the 5th wheel on the semi and the RV kingpin that is suppose to absorb much of that.
Hello Rose and Glenn! Wow….what a towing machine! I don’t think it would work for us in the boondocking world. But……if we were campground folks, this rig would be awesome! On a side note…..do you know what they say about guys with big trucks? They can tow a lot of stuff. You thought I was going to say something else, eh? Head out on Tuesday evening to pick up our repaired rig. It has been challenging to repair the fiberglass as it needs to be above 60 degrees. On Wednesday, we have an appointment in Poncha Springs CO to do the initial warranty work repairs. Safe travels!
----"On a side note…..do you know what they say about guys with big trucks?" The lude answers to those jokes only apply to those folk who don't actually use their truck for anything trucky. This guy uses his truck, no compensating there.
I can get 8 MPG pulling my suite. My truck is also a working truck. These trucks last 1 million miles. A 1 ton last 200k miles so you get 5 times the miles out of a semi. Life cost 500k of 1 ton trucks vs a 150k semi. It's a no brainer.
@@ResetYourJourney The newer trucks that have say the DD15 Detroit motor with the DD13 transmission and Maps installed in the transmission can do 12 to 14 MPG. When on cruise control the MAPS system is a GPS system that constantly updates to give you the best fuel economy for the road and hill your climbing. It knows exactly where you are and the grade it will even stop accelerating before the top of a hill knowing your going to gain speed back going downhill to save fuel. Found in 2016 and newer semi's.
Just a suggestion. I wouldn’t use the commercial fifth wheel hitch on a rv as the commercial hitch only pivots front to back not side to side as a rv hitch would
I am from Saskatoon Saskatchewan before from Prince Albert Grain n livestock farmer where r you from now retired planning to purchase R.V. H.R.V. truck 2024 n leave -40 below for winters some place warmer we might meet some place

That would certainly do the job easily!
That's the goal. I'd like to get my own truck and toy hauler to travel around
It's a worthy goal (and would be awesome)! Thank you for commenting and we wish you well!

It was quite the set up! Thanks for commenting Kevin. Hope you're well!
From someone who has been doing this for many years, he is going to tear the welds out of the front frame of that trailer without a cushioned hitch.
We wondered about the dynamics of this hitch system, but knew nothing about it. Although we have learned more after showcasing his set up and producing the video. Thank you for commenting and we wish you well!

Class ! Nothing.more to say except "Class"!
For sure!
That’s awesome set up and a beautiful truck
We totally agree Randy!

Totally agree!
How are you not tearing up the frame on that camper? Without no side to side pivot on your fifth wheel.
We're not sure what Don's outcome has been with this set up. But we are seeing more and more like it. Appreciate you communicating. Wishing you well!

Ha! Yeah, thought we were going a distance direction with big trucks....
Glad to hear you're getting your ORV back. Hope it's good as new!
Awesome! :-)
Nice video thanks for posting. That’s the same thing I plan on doing with my Cabover project that I’m building on RUclips@NF project shop
Nice! We hope the project turns out amazing! Wishing you well.

That's impressive (and cool) technology! And some great numbers for towing!
Then you can overhaul the semi motor for 50k and go another 1million miles
Nice!
I Wood love to see a video Of this truck pulling this trailer down the road
Agreed! It's unfortunate we were not in a position to catch that footage. Thank you for commenting and we wish you well!
I mean...why not...we are getting to the point where a 1 ton diesel costs as much as a Peterbilt with a sleeper...
So true! Appreciate you following along and commenting. Wishing you well!
do you feel good looking over your hood feeling neat sitting in your seat while gliding in your pete??
Funny and creative! Thanks for commenting!
Be nice to have air brakes on the RV fifth wheel
Tou bet it would! Thank you for commenting and following along!

We're just showcasing what Don had to tow his 5th wheel. We thought it was cool. Thanks for commenting and we wish you well.
You can get hitches that also go side to side.
Good information Duane. Thank you!

Thank you Chuck. If we make it to Wyoming this go around, we'll look you up. Stay well!
Be nice to put air brakes on the RV trailer.
It sure would! Thanks for watching and commenting!
You can. Buy order a space craft fifthwheel camper. No frame flex. Last one you will ever buy
I love love that Blue truck that’s sexy
It is an attractive setup!
