Thank you for giving Shelley her flowers. She’s actually the true star of the movie. Shes the one that has the biggest character arc to save herself and her son. In this scene she’s trying to mask with a smile but her eyes are so sad to know her husband has and could still hurt her son.

Yeah first her eyes are all over. Shifting around as a liar would..it shows discomfort and searching. Then she settles on her watered down version. Then a touch of sadness while she tries to cover for him.

I've seen The Shining so many times that whenever I watch that scene, all I can focus on is the ash building up on Shelly Duval's cigarette and how badly she needs to tap it. It makes me weirdly anxious for some reason.

I've had a photo of Shelley Duvall's eyes as my background on RUclips for ages. Love her.

Excellent analysis. Clear and concise. I wholeheartedly agree about Ms. Duvall's performance and the depths and colours that she works with, her performance is the keystone to the whole picture. If we, as the audience, don't feel her terror and fear, than the movie doesn't really work. Jack Nicholson can whoop and holler all he wants, but if she isn't reacting and acting according to the story's demands, than the movie falls flat. I am reminded of the fact that she is a Cannes winner for acting in Altman's 3 Women, three years before, and I have always felt she deserved an Oscar nomination for her work in The Shining.

Yeah. Its making something big that happened into something small, almost accidental on purpose to diminish the incident.
Because thats how you would play that if you were protecting your spouse. It was pretty good. And she often gets bashed for her acting in the film and yes sometimes it wasnt great. We all know the stories of how kubrick was with her and the almost abusive way he treated her. I think he pulled the best he could get from her.
But most important her facial expressions and reaction to what was going on around her toward the end were spot on.
She sells her fear to us..and makes it all the more frightening.
Her acting overall was ok at times but I really cant imagine anyone else in the role.
