I read some comments couple years ago, when someone asked US troops which country they wish to go into combat with and one US trooper said the UK Royal marines, because he served along side them in Afghanistan, and the royal marines fight like the "Gates of hell has just opened up! for me as a Brit civilian I was very proud to read that from another countries soldier. and shows how respected UK royal marines are around the world. he wasn't the only one, many more said British troops.

When I was on my second stint in Afghanistan in 2013, I was with quite an elite unit, no point naming it hear as I think it'll start a comments war on who's who of the elite world, but the rest of the British forces were trying to minimise their fighting time while pushing the Afghan security forces to do it themselves for our withdrawal from Helmand in just over a years time and we were one of the last British units still taking the fight to the enemy .. But anyway.. During an engagement with the taliban, we were getting hit from 3 sides.. A sniper weapon from our right, a grenade launcher from our left and a PKM machine gun from right up the middle.. And on it went, 1 hour, 2 hours more and more motorcycles turning up with more ammunition for them to plaster us and despite them surrounding us we fought them to a standstill... And I dunno if you know but we used to be able to hear their radio traffic on the ICOM radio.. And the commander of the Taliban unit surrounding us called over the radio "Be careful my brothers! These Americans are very good warriors! The best Warriors!"
Now, putting aside the fact he thought we were Americans, that comment is probably the best compliment by any foreign force I can imagine! When not only another warrior but your enemy says you're good and one of the best.. That can't be beat.

Thanks for that, Joel - I for one had no real idea what kinds of things they did at all, although I knew that their training is probably the most gruelling of all. I have an acquaintance who used to be the in the Royal Marines Band - he's now a Salvation Army Officer, in fact - I believe their role on the battlefield is to be stretcher-bearers, which has got to be one of the most dangerous of all - dodging bullets to pick up casualties. Also, the son of a friend I used to have in England tragically died three months into his basic training at Lympstone Commando (which is in Devon, Southwest England). Apparently the exercise required them to dive - in full kit - and swim some distance underwater, alas he dropped his gun and was made to go back for it... Unfortunately - and it had nothing to do with the training as it eventually turned out; he suffered sudden heart failure during the return dive, and never came up again.

The British have always had a strong tendency to understatement, going back centuries. Lord Uxbridge had his leg shattered by a cannonball at Waterloo and exclaimed to Wellington "By God, sir, I've lost my leg!" to which the reply was "By God, so you have!". You know it's been a bloody battle when it's been described as a trifle tricky or similar. We're more likely to joke rather than be gung ho. EG, I believe that some of the US army called Tora Bora 'The Caves of Death' whereas our lot referred to them as Tora Bora Tompkinson after a society girl called Tara Palmer-Tompkinson, a rough equivalent to Paris Hilton.

I have noticed that no one has translated the Royal Navy/Marine jargon yet.
The language aboard a Royal Navy vessel is called JACK SPEAK. All Royal Marines and sailors (the narrator served on CHF so was a sailor) are taught this from the day they join the military.
It overcame the problem of people with different accents across the UK, joining the forces and not understanding each other. Geordie is very different Glaswegian.
In this video, he uses some you may not be sure on.
    SHUT-EYE - sleep
    OLD OPPOS - old friends

@jenniferharrison8915 I agree with what you have said.
In 1961 I left school and joined the Royal Marines. I was little bit shy and lacking in confidence. But as soon as I entered the service I came out of my shell and embraced the whole idea of being not just a soldier, but a Royal Marine who wears the coveted green beret upon completion of training.
The Royal Marines are the Royal Navy's crack amphibious soldiers, who also specialise in helicopter assaults.
The training is challenging, but all the effort that you have put in is worth it
when you get presented with that green beret.
I am now 78 years old and I often think about my 10 years service, and all the good times I had with my Marine mates.
I am certain that my military service had the effect of setting me up for the rest
of my life, and I am always grateful for that.

It's all good to say 'there should be no war' [which there shouldn't] but man cannot be trusted for that too happen, and where there are enemy regiemes in the world [china/nk/iran/russia etc.] one has to have a defence against them.

12:31 - the machine gun there which the Estonian Volunteers are firing is the German MG3, which is a version of the WW2 MG42 which has had it's rate of fire artificially limited from 1550 rounds per minute to about 800-950 rounds a minute. This prevents soldiers from burning through ammo as fast, which was the major downside of the German WW2 weapon. It's also been converted to fire 7.62x51mm NATO rounds rather than 7.92x57mm Mauser ammo.
Otherwise it's the same MG42 the German soldiers of WW2 would have recognised, that's how good of a machine gun it is.

They are not easily stopped.

  • @nickgrazier3373
    @nickgrazier3373 Год назад +2

The defenders were Estonians and you could tell that by the machine gun being fired it was a machine gun first designed by the Germans in WWII and it’s still used today updated but still one of the best MGs today. They were firing blanks with a BFA (blank firing attachment) fitted to catch fired blank debris and if you looked you could see the gasses being vented to the sides. The Brit guns have all have yellow BFAs fitted which are obvious on purpose. Also on that last assault there was a guy standing there and he threw a white sheet of paper to the marine trying to run past, he was dead! NATO have official exercise’s on a regular basis during the year and are evaluated officially by NATO once a year, there is the MiniVal to start the years and learn then the MaxiVal to bring together all the training, then at the end of the year they have the official NATO TakiVal. These are or were the basic testing of your readiness for war checks every year. The situation now is the fact NATO is integrating with other NATO forces much more than was previous realising we are better together than individual country forces. That is what you were seeing, the Brits and Estonian forces testing each other with the referees with oversight (with the bits of paper telling you if your dead or just wounded).
    Cheers Aah Kid

Anybody in their right mind does not want war, but the reality is, if a rogue country run by a dictatorship turns nasty, aka Putin, we need to be able to defend ourselves, otherwise, dictators like Putin see us as weak, and may be tempted to attack us or intimidate us. A strong military is a deterrent for a peaceful world!… That said, I just think, as citizens, it’s easy for us to say I’m against war, but until your country is attacked, like Ukraine, you realise the importance of having a strong military, and not taking that or our freedom for granted. The freedoms we have today, to be able to live our lives on a day to day basis, without having a dictatorship dictate our comings and going’s, is a privilege given to us by our armed forces, who sacrificed their lives in two world wars, and continue to this day to defend our countries and way of life. 🇺🇸🤝🇨🇦🤝🇬🇧🤝🇦🇺🤝🇳🇿

At the time of writing I believe the Brits are the “lead force” in Estonia, Canada does the same job in Latvia, Germany in Lithuania, and of course the US in Poland, with all these battle groups augmented by forces from other NATO member states & integrated with the host nation’s forces. I’m a Brit and I’ve spent a lot of time in the Baltics in a non military capacity; it’s a beautiful part of the world with vast fir forests and dotted with lakes, and generally very flat terrain. Winter must be harsh for the guys out there, -20C or less is pretty normal. The base in Estonia (Tapa) is to the north, a bit away from my usual beat but if I make it up there on my next trip I’ll be honoured to buy these guys a beer if they’re allowed to hang out in the local “baar.” Yes those look like live firing exercises, but I suspect the man down was part of the exercise (I sure hope so.) I have no doubt that Putin had his eyes on the Baltics before his invasion of Ukraine foundered, and it demonstrates how critical the Ukraine’s war effort is, that if Putin were to succeed, and was insane enough to attack NATO territory, this could well become the next front line.

It's rarely, if ever, about "Land and money!" War from a dictatorship is about power and control, conquest and subjugation. Exercises such as these are very hard work, pushing the human body and mind to extremes, learning what is possible with determination. At the same time, it can be a lot of fun gaining the experience necessary, and coming out the other side of it knowing you have achieved something you never thought you had in you. The comradeship you earned is generally something that lasts a lifetime. It's not for wimps and softies, but even they can learn the benefits of such training. With the right mindset, you begin to understand nature in the raw as well as the mind of your enemy. You learn not to back down from the hardships and difficulties you face in such training, and it makes a man out of the boy. Even if you failed as a soldier, you would still come out with much more confidence than what you went in with, and a better ability to deal with the difficulties of civilian life. Why do you think people devoted to sports push themselves to their limits?
One reason that the British armed forces have such a good reputation, is because every single recruit is a volunteer, for apart from a war footing such as the two world wars, there has never been a conscript military in the UK. We used to have National Service, when young men were "called-up" to serve two years, When their time was done they could either leave or continue as a "Regular" in his chosen service. Unfortunately, the cost of NS was too great in the years following WW2, and by the early 1960's it was brought to an end. The result since then has been more than two generations of teenagers who have little respect for themselves, let alone respect for anyone else. What a loss to the UK.

In case you haven't heard of the country where they where training Estonia is a north European country (and technically also east European country) after formally being under Russia's Soviet Union. Estonians are technically cousins of the Fins who are only roughly an hour south from them by sea (hence the Finnish capital Helsinki also showing on the map).
Estonia has contributed the most of their GDP to Ukraine at 1.1% and their internet can be run even in the deepest arias of their forests. Estonia has also the main country responsable for the creation of Skype.
Their flag is of 3 colours going from left to right with the top third being blue the middle third being black and the bottom third being white.

There's this weird thing in the British Forces, that when you speak you can save time by missing out half the letters. That's why he says "mrun" rather than "marines", and "klomtas" rather than "kilometers". I've seen documentaries where they were actually trained to do it.
Personally I prioritise clarity and the prudent choice of content.

This film while displaying an insight to the tough soldiering skills of the RM. This film is not insane. Life as a Royal Marine is far from the definition of mental illness. Insanity and British military are words that should not be used in the same sentence. Go and check in a credible dictionary and nowhere will you find the definition of the word insane used as a superlative. As a retired Mental Health Nurse who saw daily real examples of insanity I hate the ridiculous use of the word by people who have no concept of it’s meaning.

However, as long as they do so,,, the details are of no interest to me. Nor do I afford anyone in the services any particular “respect”. It's a job, and they've all volunteered for it, because, presumably, they want to do it.
