Scroll lock did have a purpose it is just a legacy key now. Originally it was used to modify the arrow keys so you can move around documents. I know some people who still use it in Excel.
Same here. I bought a pocket operator after a couple years of watching Red Means Recording and Andrew Huang... Now I have 2. The PO-12 Rhythm and PO-14 Sub. I'm still learning them, but if you wanna to throw a couple bucks at something and make some fun noises, I highly recommend a Pocket Operator.
The PO-12 does have a metronome icon top left of screen, to use it make sure headphone socket is empty then press Function and BPM to select SY1, change its speed by adjusting the tempo. * as this video is four years old and has almost 500 comments someone may have already mentioned this.
Red Means Recording yup tbe cutting mat. I was looking about a same looking one, but i was looking on my local amazon (italian). Is like empty about this thing! Thanks for link!
LOVE your videos! Just an FYI - there is a metronome. Hold down funct and press the BPM button on the top. Toggles it on and off. Keep rocking - your stuff is great!!
Thanks! Yeah, it was stuck in my head that functionality was reserved for analog sync. I never thought about using it as a metronome, but it totally works. At least that gave me an opportunity to talk about the step sequencing. I've updated the video descriptions to include the info about the click track.
I just got this Rhythm operator and the Arcade operator. Love this video. Great job. Thanks for the help. I dropped the Arcade operator immediately and the screen broke so I had to learn how to play that one blind. Your video was a big help there, also.
thanks for making these videos! I've had my po-12 for quite a few months but haven't done a lot to it. this was very straightforward and I feel encouraged to mess with it more!
holy shit i discovered your channel today and i just want to tell you that you are overall amazing in every way! I just absorb your videos. Keep up the good consistent work!
Officially hooked to your channel now, think I've started watching your videos three days ago. The funny subs in your OP-1 vids and excellent musical/technical skills got me. Keep it up! Already got plans to buy one of those pocket operators. :) Though I have to say, they're basically only selling the innards of the operator if you don't buy the case...
Same here. I took a dive and got a PO-14 Sub a few weeks ago, then a PO-12 Rhythm a few days ago. Having fun with them, but there's still a few things that have been frustrating me as a beginner with no real background making music.
Well done! These videos are very well lit, and they don't start with "what's up, guys!" and they get straight to the point. I have to ask, though: who is opening candy wrappers in the background? ;)
Your series on these are the best introduction movies out there for the PO´s. A small suggestion, remove the cover from the PO when doing these as we can´t see the LEDs making harder to follow.
I'm getting a portable Roland synthesizer and I wanted an inexpensive drum machine for my setup. I knew about the PO series, and I have a $50 guitar center gift card, so I'll definitely buy this guy.
I picked up the PO-12 this weekend largely because of your great demos. I'm looking forward to recording and looping with it soon, but it also works great as an extra groovy metronome for practicing.
This is easily the best demonstration how to use the PO-12. You made it look soooo simple! When I get home I´ll start working on it 😎 And for the first time I get why I should get the siliconcover 😁 Thanks a lot man!
Superb achievement and explanations. Exactly the kind of videos I'm looking for POs. Do the same for op-1 with some tutos! You are really good! Thank you
mind blowing for me. i almost know nothing about electronic music tools, i want to make music (i'm learning guitar). your videos are also great visually. thank you for making them.
With the metronome, It just set the sync to SY1 with one PO or the last one to SY5 for multiple POs so I can hear the click track. Then I just turn it off when I've played in some drums.
This was awesome! Great video and audio quality, the camera angle lets us see everything, and I really like the grid background. I also like that your intro is short. I dislike when channels have ~30 second intro montages. One suggestion: just after the intro, I think it would be cool to just see you playing with it for 5-10 seconds, perhaps with a voice-over introducing it: "This is the PO-12 Rhythm drum machine from Teenage Engineering, a [insert your opinion]. Let's see how it works!" Then you show us all the features, but from having seen you play it, we have a idea of what we're working up to.
Not sure if you touched on the overall volume. I discovered it by accident. Hold down the BPM button and choose 1-16 levels. I run mine at about 12 or so. You can hear it pretty well just in your hand or on table. Works for headphone volume too.
Just ordered one! I will use it with my 8 string guitar to crate ambient style music! Tnx for the review it helped a lot! 4:44 the FM bass is RAD! :D R = R ;)
A discovery I made on accident: pressing the FX button AFTER adding an effect intermittently cancels the FX during the pattern according to your button presses, you don't have to clear the entire FX from the pattern. Holding the button clears the FX from the pattern as it goes through the sequence, but it's nice you can add the effect to the entire pattern and selectively turn it off in the pattern later. :)
i just watched all of your videos on the PO line of synths, (the arcade is totally the best one) and was wondering if you'd make a video about the new PO-32 Tonic?
I'm having a problem... I cant seem to get mine to record my own pattern. Everytime I try following same steps as this it still just plays the pre recorded pattern.
i realize that this is buried and is 10 months old, but the swing really adds to much interest. It doesnt give the listener a stable rhythm to understand the music. With drums alone, it is fine, but in a more musical setting with other instruments that extra swing is a bit wonky
the shuffle thing is actually called "swing" and it moves the second fourth sixth etc sequencer to hit faster or less fast it gives that offbeat feeling
I have one now and it's the smallest and at the same time most fun little object I've ever owned I think. A total blast!!! But - on one of my patterns the button symbol shows - what does it mean? And the needle?
My wife said we're on a budget this year for Christmas so max £50. Now as it happens the PO 12 is just £49 so a no brainer. It'll be my first Pocket Operator and will compliment my Volcas as the Beats is a bit of a let down unfortunately. Cheers.
when he first plays the kicks at around 2:35 it sound almost like "CASH IN CASH OUT" by Pharrell, almost exact same tempo and tone. It's only some kick drums but maybe Pharrell took inspo from this lol
They all do have a built in metronome though. You just hold down the unique function key of each and push bpm to change it to sync 1 when it's by itself.
Red Means Recording but I do love all your tutorials it's how I learned to first use my pocket operators and my op-1. your videos are amazingly well done. keep creating!

I see. Tell you what: If I wasn't a poor student who spends pretty much all his money on his gear, I would be the first person to buy you one. No joke. I just happen to like your work :) And after hearing you as a person and judging by your videos, I'm positive that you're a nice person irl as well. I'm excited for the upcoming video of yours featuring the 0-Coast! :D (... actually, I was also thinking about going for a Strymon Blue Sky or El Capistan as well as a Bass Station 2. Too much nice stuff to buy and not enough money...)
"Strymon Blue Sky" ugh, yes. Please. They sound so good. I really loved this video by Mylar Melodies going over the 0-Coast: ruclips.net/video/5FW8QYt6bio/видео.html He does a great job explaining it, and then jamming on it.
Where did you get the case for it? If you remember. I've been looking for a similar one but only found them with numbers on the button covers... which makes me look like I'm a calculator fetishist.

_Scroll lock_

I have no idea how to make music but some how at 1230am I always end up watching these videos
that means you should be having a go at it.......
Same here. I thought it was about calculators
IT's literally 12:30 am, when I check the clock. and amz watching!!!
You should go for it! It’s not that difficult.
OH my god he's got a voice
Hrnek Bezucha And a nice one, too!
Bloody right OAO
This was my first thought as well xDDD
Green means recording
nothing even makes sense anymore
paulkoestner1 damn it beat me by 3 months 😖
Green means go
Red means stop
the flashing red light on a camera or camcorder(is there a difference?) means that it is recording
are you wearing a shirt made from potato chip bags
no, but my face is made of potato chip bags
GLITTERPRINCESS Pringles
Don’t be giving the fashion industry any ideas now.
Thank you for this comment. Made me laugh out loud multiple times!
BAHA

The background is amazing, it does fit so well!
I constructed small planes on such selfhealing rubber thing :D will give you more battery free creativity than those 50 000€ teenage gadgets!
It really does :) It's a cutting mat, usually used for sewing.
Red Means Recording can you put a link about the one you are using?
ComicBit The cutting mat? You can find 'em on the Amazon: www.amazon.com/Quilting-Cutting-Mats/b?ie=UTF8&node=262643011
Red Means Recording yup tbe cutting mat. I was looking about a same looking one, but i was looking on my local amazon (italian). Is like empty about this thing! Thanks for link!

Teacher: What's that thing lying on your desk?
Me: oh just a calculator
Teacher: k nvm
Me: *headbanging on sick beat I made*
my parents won't let me take mine to school
I just got this Rhythm operator and the Arcade operator. Love this video. Great job. Thanks for the help.
I dropped the Arcade operator immediately and the screen broke so I had to learn how to play that one blind. Your video was a big help there, also.
I never really got how awesome these actually are! I always wondered how they could be usable at all.
I had to watch 3 of these videos but finally I understand how these things work. Yay!
I really like this this video you actually showed me how to use my PO-12 correctly I really appreciate it, thanks and keep up the great work!
Really glad to have helped!
thanks for making these videos! I've had my po-12 for quite a few months but haven't done a lot to it. this was very straightforward and I feel encouraged to mess with it more!
yay!
holy shit i discovered your channel today and i just want to tell you that you are overall amazing in every way! I just absorb your videos. Keep up the good consistent work!
Thank YOU!
i think your channel are the only one that can explain PO effectively
Thanks! I'll be doing the PO-32 soon and let me tell you, it's the absolute best one!
Just got one of those. Best calculator ever!
7:07 Who the F@$k knows lol I lost it XD
Same here xD dunno why it amused me so much but I chuckled for like 2 minutes
I swear it was almost like asmr before he said that
Officially hooked to your channel now, think I've started watching your videos three days ago. The funny subs in your OP-1 vids and excellent musical/technical skills got me. Keep it up!
Already got plans to buy one of those pocket operators. :) Though I have to say, they're basically only selling the innards of the operator if you don't buy the case...
These little machines fascinate me, I dont make music but this might be a good place to start. Thank you for the video!
Same here. I took a dive and got a PO-14 Sub a few weeks ago, then a PO-12 Rhythm a few days ago. Having fun with them, but there's still a few things that have been frustrating me as a beginner with no real background making music.
I think you should be paid from teenage engineer
I think teenage engineers should be paid better.
Zydiz Okay yeah it was a corny joke.
this channel needs 100k subs by now
Well done! These videos are very well lit, and they don't start with "what's up, guys!" and they get straight to the point. I have to ask, though: who is opening candy wrappers in the background? ;)
Really, really sorry about that. Just got a lav mic and I didn't set it up properly. Will not happen again. :{
I was opening the wrappers, sorry ;)
_Shh, don't tell him _*_Red Means Recording_*_!_
That sounds like beard rustle...
What’s up guys
Holy crap you are a wizard with this thing! I think I'm gonna get one for Christmas now.
Your series on these are the best introduction movies out there for the PO´s. A small suggestion, remove the cover from the PO when doing these as we can´t see the LEDs making harder to follow.
I hope they give you a bunch of these because you're a great seller!
far more useful than I thought. for the price, doesn't seem like a bad little tool/you combination.
I'm getting a portable Roland synthesizer and I wanted an inexpensive drum machine for my setup. I knew about the PO series, and I have a $50 guitar center gift card, so I'll definitely buy this guy.
By the way, I am absolutely in love with your videos

awesome, yeah, i could totally see it working that way!
You deserve at least 1 mil subs
Excellent review. 🙏
Absolutely dig your vids. Love from Belfast

*I'm you operator with my pocket calculator*
Kraftwerk 👌
thank you for this! I've been waiting for someone to do a great video on the pocket operator's
Superb achievement and explanations. Exactly the kind of videos I'm looking for POs. Do the same for op-1 with some tutos! You are really good! Thank you
I definitely should, thanks for the suggestion.
so many videos, HELL YEAH!!
Yes there is a metronome builted in!Press FX+BPM(the one with the Metronome icon on it ;) ) and 8,thats how you turn it on and off!
mind blowing for me. i almost know nothing about electronic music tools, i want to make music (i'm learning guitar). your videos are also great visually. thank you for making them.
i love this channel
I'm finally gonna buy one of these! The pattern you create reminds me of Street of Rage. o.O
Can't wait to hear you sample this thing
Definitely want to sample all the Pocket Operators into the OP-1 and make something. Just need to get my OP-1 fixed. :(
Just got my brother one for Christmas, I've got the Sub one. Christmas jam is on : )
is that a sewing machine on the display?
RT
Yes
Think so
Kinda
why
Nice one, mine was gathering dust until I saw this tutorial.
is it just me or isnt this like the most configurable METRONOME like ever??? I'm getting one just for that!!!
Been playing with this thing for months. Didn't know about the pattern chaining...
I'm getting this one tomoz also got arcade it's getting returned tho it went faulty
Yay, this stuff is gold. Great scads of stuff the ‘manual’ doesn’t tell you. Thanks!
That's some Aphex Twin shit right there.
LOVE PO 12!

7:08 best sound ever
Dj Young Al but what does “true to fuck nose” mean?
Best video showing these POs!!
Amazing!
Neat as neat. Thank you!

yup yup, good tip.
just coming back to the po-12 after a hiatus of sorts. wow i forgot how sick this thing is.
“And this one… who the fuck knows?”😂. Thank you for the video series!
that's actually so cute
Omg I love it it's like a little mini hip hop drum machine lol
This is possibly gon be my next po might even order one today as had a little scratchcard win yesterday 😃
The little game&watch looking guy has me dying 😂
Superb demo!!! Thank you
Just ordered one! I will use it with my 8 string guitar to crate ambient style music! Tnx for the review it helped a lot! 4:44 the FM bass is RAD! :D R = R ;)

Where can we get this case with drum kit symbols ? I see there is a case with numbers.
5:22 you can hear the beat is far too interesting I better make it more boring.
Steven Worrell
Exactly what i thought too

This is way better than the Korg Volca Shits man!!
Love the sounds you're coming up with. Where'd you get that sweet case? Haven't seen one with anything other than numbers on them.
Hey I’m trying to find this case as well… 😅 do you know where I could get it from, please?
@@jonathangodinho amazon
OMG YOU SOUND SO COOOOLLL!!!
Seems like fun!
Awesome video! I have only one question: How do you clear sounds that you have entered while live playing? Can't wrap my head around it.
check out the guides on the TE site.
I have one now and it's the smallest and at the same time most fun little object I've ever owned I think. A total blast!!! But - on one of my patterns the button symbol shows - what does it mean? And the needle?
Awesome demo!! God Bless!! :D
Great video! Where do you get the rhythm case, I can only see the case with numbers on it?
Hi, love this vid, very helpful.... which case is that? I can't find one for the PO-12
It's the one teenage engineering sells
My wife said we're on a budget this year for Christmas so max £50. Now as it happens the PO 12 is just £49 so a no brainer. It'll be my first Pocket Operator and will compliment my Volcas as the Beats is a bit of a let down unfortunately. Cheers.

you deserve more subs.
They all do have a built in metronome though. You just hold down the unique function key of each and push bpm to change it to sync 1 when it's by itself.
When I made these I considered that a sync mode, not a metronome, but yes, it acts that way too.
Red Means Recording but I do love all your tutorials it's how I learned to first use my pocket operators and my op-1. your videos are amazingly well done. keep creating!
Inspirational!
You should use garage band for your next video. I hear it has a lot of functionality
Gabe is that a joke?
funny meme It's actually a pretty decent production environment. A little limiting, but good for beginners
Hi there :)
Nice to hear you commenting on and/or reviewing those little boxes of fun.
The PO-12 and the PO-20 I own myself, I like them a lot because of their good value. And you wouldn't believe the huge sound that comes out of those tiny things until you hear it! (I was a bit reluctant investing in them because of their looks at first, but it turned out that they're built more solid than some other synths I've seen which cost more than three times as much :P)
Just something I wanted to tell/ask you: What about the Make Noise 0-Coast? It looks like an absolutely awesome synth and I think I will get it within the next few months, however it would be awesome seeing you getting your hands on one of those neat synths because I want to hear what you will come up with. They're weird at first, but since they're patchable and lack a filter (which they more than make up for with sound shaping possibilities) I'm really curious with what you would come up :)
(Oh and in case you remember: I didn't go for the LXR because I was offered a DSI Tempest for a good price, I will pick that up within this week. Oh and I would also be curious what you can get out of a Moog synth, I love their sound :)
... I'm just writing down what comes to my mind, hope you don't mind. Guess you're just too inspiring ;)
"What about the Make Noise 0-Coast?"
I'll tell you what about the 0-Coast: I want it desperately.
(... actually, I was also thinking about going for a Strymon Blue Sky or El Capistan as well as a Bass Station 2. Too much nice stuff to buy and not enough money...)
"Strymon Blue Sky" ugh, yes. Please. They sound so good.
I really loved this video by Mylar Melodies going over the 0-Coast: ruclips.net/video/5FW8QYt6bio/видео.html
He does a great job explaining it, and then jamming on it.
Ollie is so legit. Does really great stuff with everything he touches.
Where did you get the case for it? If you remember.
I've been looking for a similar one but only found them with numbers on the button covers... which makes me look like I'm a calculator fetishist.
0:31-0:32 Flowey song start
great overview
weird to finally hear your voice. I like it though.
YOU SPOKE
Just like Zarathustra
Actually i think there is a metronome type thing on this lil guy, i use it all the time. If you hold function and hit the bpm button it does a little bass every note
You're right! It's the same click that's used for sync, so I never thought about using it as a metronome, just as a sync click. Pretty dumb of me, honestly, haha, but at least it was a way of showing off the step sequencing.
it does have a metronom. activate it pressing bpm + function
Can you like connect these together and use multiple at one time to overlay patterns and combine notes and instruments
+Compl3xity J0nes you can indeed sync them together and play them all at once.
thank you
props for the "who the fuck knows" effect 😂
