  • Billy takes a trip onto the chateau roof in search of better internet guided by a very noisy Ryan, I make do and mend the rotten front door with some modern materials. We throw away the worlds ugliest lawn mower and I go into the Basmaignée chapel in search of its artistic treasures.
    Help me to keep making videos and restoring this Chateau by visiting my official PATREON page.

    My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
    My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
    It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
    When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
    We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
    I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
    These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
    We film and edit everything ourselves.
    I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

    BIG TIP FROM SOMEONE IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY--- you arent supposed to mix the entire container at one time!!! you are supposed to take a board or cardboard material put the amount of putty you want to use on it, take the hardner and lay a bead across the top and the size of that bead depends on the amount of putty but general rule is you lay a bead of hardner half way across the top and its realative to the amount of putty you are using, if the pile is as wide as your hand then the bead of hardner would be half as wide as your hand if the amount of putty is the size of your thumbnail the bead of hardner would be half the size of your thumbnail and thats usually sufficient. To much hardner and it will set fast, not enough hardner and it just takes longer to set up but it will set so if you are unsure use less. In this case you are fine because you are using alot but in general dont do that and if you must mix the entire container, use about half the tube of hardner maybe a little more and it will double your working time. The amount of hardner used does not determine how hard the putty is when it sets, it only determines how quickly it starts to set.

      Brandon beat me to leaving this tip. If you mix too much putty at once it will harden & be wasted before you can use it...

    • @phyllisclosser1383
      @phyllisclosser1383 4 года назад +7

      Brandon Reid Could you mix this stuff in a plastic baggie and then when well mixed, cut of a corner and apply it like a pastry piping to keep it more where you want it and save waste. This way the compound is not exposed to air and might last longer in soft mailable state. Don't know if this gets too hot in the mixed stage but if you use a freezer bag that is a bit heavier it might be sturdy enough to work. Also if you place a small amount of Saran Wrap over an intact area of the trim then apply some of the putty on and let set up, you can then remove it and remove Saran Wrap, use this as a scree to replicate the profile over the newly formed areas later.

    • @Vangent87
      @Vangent87 4 года назад +10

      I wouldn’t recommend using it like that, the spreader is used to press the putty into the crack or whatever you’re attempting to fill. Also being exposed to air isn’t what causes it to harden it’s adding the hardner, once you add that it’s going to harden at the same pace regardless of air or not. When you store it you want to make sure the lid is on it good and it’s sealed because air will cause it to harden without hardner over time

    My family and I live in a 120-year-old Victorian home. Big, white, pillars in the front - we love it. The tenants before us applied 'band-aid' fixes instead of doing it right so my full time job is going back and doing it all right. I would love to document all that I do but I don't know if there would be interest in it. Either way it will be done but I'd love to share my findings.
    Michael, your videos are extremely inspiring to me; I appreciate your appreciation for old things - it's something we share. There are days where it seems too much & that's when I find a video of yours and it really puts things in perspective. This, and bringing your family into the fold for this excellent adventure is a breath of fresh air in a time seemingly filled with chaos and destruction. Thank you!
    EDIT: Thank you all for your encouraging words! I will give this thing a shot. Thanks also to this channel for the inspiration. The first thing I will document is the complete reconstruction of the grand front steps. It will be highly custom and historically accurate.

      My brother and I felt the same way about our family's private cemetery. He and I struggled to get it looking presentable again because of it's historical relevancy, and also to honor our fore bearers. A friend shouldered the cost of maintaining a family mausoleum. Nothing like paying the dollar amount equal to the price of a new auto for roof on a building where no one lives.

    Painting the door to the Gardener's cottage is right. Even if it had been all teak, it would have needed more sanding and scraping to get rid of all the old paint before you oiled it. A painted door won't need washing and oiling now and then to look nice and it won't get darker either. You can use a crowbar under the door (and some pieces of wood if necessary) to guide it in the correct position when putting it back on the hinges. Mind your fingers; you only got five of them on each hand. ;-)

      @alison webster Of course I googled 'motte and bailey' and was fascinated by the medieval history. Thanks for the info. By the water course, I assume you mean the creek called, btw, "Ruisseau des Beuchetières".

    St Elizabeth is my confirmation saint and St Anne is an important saint to my family dating back generations! What are the chances they are the ones in your chapels altar. Thanks for showing us this, it’s very beautiful. I love your ‘birthday’ window. Btw the Missals are still used every Mass, they contain the bible readings for each Sunday Mass and it allows the people to follow along. I’m excited to keep watching the gardeners cottage and one day the chapel restoration :)

    Fascinating tour of the chapel! Some details for you...on the little tabernacle door that's the Lamb of God alright, Jesus, but risen from the dead because he's holding a standard of victory (like a flag) and his blood, representing his life, is poured out for people into a chalice, which is received sacramentally in the consecrated bread and wine (also stored within the tabernacle). Those little books are principally to help follow the service (Mass), like the Anglican Book of Common Prayer; they give the prayers and Bible readings of the service in French. They're actually a very recent thing, late 19th century and were popular until the 1960s. I'd love to know the text below the major carving (Jesus dead with Our Lady) which I couldn't make out in the video, and the window behind the altar. Great videos btw.

      Could it be a Pieta? I'm not sure of the spelling, but it is most likely in Italian.

      @@judithburke1539 sure it is. Although the pose - Jesus' body NOT being held - I've another theory. :-)

    Always entertaining! Thank you Micheal et'al.
    The timber on the bottom of exterior doors is a sacrificial piece. This timber is designed to keep the door from rotting and to throw rain to keep it from coming under the door. When this timber begins to rot, one simply swaps it out for another.
    Bondo and other body fillers are extremely versatile.
    Cheers!

    Hi, I'm so glad I caught this episode. That chapel is lovely and such a sacred space where mass was once said. I appreciate your reverence and respect for it. Those are indeed missals and they were and are used for mass to follow along. They are probably French and Latin which is the universal language of the Catholic church and what all mass used to be said in. Now a lot of masses are said in the vernacular since Vatican II. However, a lot of us prefer the Traditional Latin Mass or Extraordinary Form or the Old Rite. Thank you so much for your respect for the chapel. Your show is so interesting and well done.
