It would be perfectly fine for there to be an AdwDialog based PtyxisPreferencesDialog if/when it does bottom sheets when it makes sense. Obviously mobile is one example. Tiling window managers could be another. But this could/should be done inside of libadwaita with appropriate heuristics.

No, I don’t like new name. But it’s great that he doesn’t use modal dialog just because everyone is doing that and sticked to something that is probably objectively better.

it would be nice if it was a runtime decision to use modal or non modal, depending if your platform is mobile or not it could change between modal and non modal

there is one setting in Mutter i've forgotten about, "org.gnome.mutter attach-modal-dialogs" ..although it doesnt seem to work on AdwDialogs, but i cant find why (some issue etc)

@@mii_betaprobably because new AdwDialogs aren't real windows, so they cannot be directly manipulated by window manager

Dialogs should be modal only if they need to. And what is happening in GNOME where moving a dialog moves the window is crazy.

Good summary: modals are pretty yeah but also pretty annoying. I've been meaning to turn them off with Tweaks for some time and finally did just now.

Modal is good for some stuff, such as simple yes/no or warnings. For others, not so much, such as visual settings or other form of floating content.

Im not sold on having the preferences as a bottom sheet when in the mobile mode. Then again i dont have a device small enough to really test how it feels so it could work better in practice

Well ughm, the modal window sticking is just a Mutter/Gnome preference innit? (also you can disable that in tweaks)

You baited us with COSMIC in the title but this is 95% GNOME. We don't want GNOME, we want COSMIC.

Why we need mobile-view when gnome apps performance is horrible on mobile devices?
But still strong notebooks with 1366x768 display are unoptimized. :)

I had dialogs on KDE which seem to be all non-modal. They were opened in the background, behind the application window and potentially somewhere off. So I needed to use the task bar to find a fucking dialog which does not have an own icon.
Another huge issue with non-modal dialogs is that you need to be able to alt-tab between them. It's simply horrible because why would you open a dialog to put them behind the application? If you want settings to apply in realtime besides the main application window, just don't use dialogs.
Dialogs are intended to disrupt. If you could simply skip a dialog, it's pointless and users would forget dialogs somewhere in the background, potentially causing user error later on.
From an application developer's perspective, non-modal dialogs are stupid. It just increases area for potential errors during runtime.

mobile is mobile please do not put this garbage on desktop non modal is more specific for desktop and modal is for phones like so we need to separate this. Handle 2 places in one solution its not good for long term perspective i think.

I dunno...but for me...the whole text editor remake kinda stings...the themes they have there?....not good for my eyes...unlike gEdit....where I was able to get a slew of themes... this limited selection doesn't do it for me. I used to be able to copy/paste themes into the "gtksource" folder and then select what I needed....now?...that somehow doesn't work anymore 😢 oh well....progress....right?

    • @mii_beta
      @mii_beta  7 месяцев назад +1

definitely you can, same way; it just needs gtksource themes; but on the Flatpak directory of the app
