my favorite bomber class is actually the giant mandragoras, they attack slow but rather than charging right past enemies their spin attack has a way of knocking them back to chain up hits, making them very effective at pushing back mobs of enemies into a corner and then exploding on them all simultaneously. very good at clearing out crowded rooms in strongholds and acts as a decent meatshield too, being rather hefty. giant flyers are probably the best for their versatility tho. I wanted to remark however that in addition to being found above the cloud levels, randomly generated unique flying monsters are also sometimes encountered in radiant quests, referred to by quest givers as "birds". But not all giant monsters found in quests can be captured, ONLY if they lack the red 'boss' glow around them it seems. I also noticed that the huge Dark Glitch Castles tend to generate a single unique giant bird inside them. Given the mobility of these creatures, they may have already flown the coop by the time you get inside, but if you look around in the airspace inside those castles you can often find one lurking. I'm guessing that this is similar to how other structures like Minikog labratories and Fennex Arenas generate with randomized monsters inside that aren't native to the planet.

I remember talking about pets and collars on the nightly video you did when it was first added. Some ideas, like Lumoths with bomb collars in those little pod things that had the pet wander nearby. I'd really love things like Tags that can be added that give the mob special attacks, or some other way to teach them attacks. Imagine the Adult Poptop swinging his massive arm, cleaving the enemy into two pieces, and having poison bones fly out from the enemy, hitting all his friends. Or giving the Lumoth a lightning beam attack that does massive damage but has a cooldown.
~Rip In Pepperonis~ Pulpin was an amazing pet, firing in every direction, and their OP-Factor was cut short. Crippled damage and only one direction to fire in, Pulpin was left behind by many. That was a very informative video, thanks! I would have enjoyed seeing how a damage boosted Volcano Crab compares to the Pulpin as well, but these were all excellent recommendations, all of which are more than worthy of replacing my useless (yet extremely adorable) Fennix.
wat Fennix is useless in combat? But it was always so powerful against players! Are you sure? I haven't caught one yet, but I find it hard to believe that the little flame foxes are useless.
theuncalledfor If you keep it out all the time it'll get lost or run off to fight something it can't hit (birds and other flying creatures) since it has almost no jumping ability and its flames only shoot in a straight line. Don't get me wrong, if it hits, it'll kill just about anything in one to two hits, but that's if it hits, which is very rarely. It is adorable though, so it has that going for it.
I'll just imagine that the pulpin uses a water jet on par with those used for heavy machining, like the industrial hydro-jet that cuts through heavy metals xD
With all of this downtime as the devs focus on the console release, I think this would be a perfect opportunity to do another "Best Pets" video - especially since the Pulpin got smacked with the nerf bat years ago. It would be extra cool if you expanded the content into subcategories of pets (melee, ranged, ground, flying, etc.) and even focused on some of the finer characteristics of each pet. I think my personal favorite pets are the Hemogoblin (fast, tanky, splits in two) and the Pteropod (ranged, flying, no swoop attack).
Got him today. He shoots straight up but in caves with uneven terrain he will adjust to fire at the foes. Also some tactic in where to place him in cave combat. I place him behind me while i lure out the foes and then i get behind him.
As for the large flying ones, I have actually seen two different types on the same planet. I found them while I was exploring a Glitch Evil Fortress (which are these huge castles inhabited by Glitch Dark Knights) since the castles climb really high. The first one I found had this attack where they spit out live fish, and the second had this poison orb attack. They have a base attack of 15 so they're pretty good for as a general fighting pet, as you said. Previously I thought they were exclusive to the castles, but now that I know where they really come from I'm definitely gonna catch more. *EDIT:* I was right the first time, the fish vomit one that I caught was exclusive to the castle. I fond another fortress and it had one of the largeflying monsters, and it was on low ground the same area where I caught the first one. So there's only one type of largeflying for each planet, but the ones in the castles are different. Another thing, for the ones exclusive to the fortresses, there's only one in each fortress, so if you wanna catch it be careful. The one I just got actually spits out rainbows.
What kind of planet did you find them on? And another question is do all pets have special attacks cause I got some birds but all they do is dive bomb the enemies.
It was on a Snow planet, specifically Al Tarf Cradle IV. The coordinates are X 452678703, Y 771306226. If you're gonna fly there, make sure to leave a bookmark on your home solar system.

And i saw another one and different bird, that was flying near! but when i reached place i saw it - it`s gone... i even build a "hunter ground" to the left and right from the roof of castle - but no other birds appeared =s
Ooglers have nice charge attack. Moontant is pretty agile and deals good damage. Anglure provides light and deals insane damage, but his timing is often off.
sadly the nightly is broken, so you have to cheat to be able to play it. S.A.I.L. won't boot up on start, or upgrade, so you have to spawn in shipT3 (atleast) and a MM (beamAxe).
lol I caught a shit ton of randomly generated monsters a mandraflora a bunch of poptops a fennix and a hemogoblin. I carry them around with me wherever I go and my inventory space is dying
There's actually a tier 7 armor set, no joke. It's crafted at the replicator, with i think an accelerator add on (I'm not certain, it may be separator). It's crafted with a bunch of perfectly generic items, gotten with a static cell, venom sample, fire core, and cryo sample at treasured trophies. It takes 100+ for the set, but it's worth it. If you don't want to bother with all that, it's just /spawnitem perfecthead, perfectpants, and perfectchest.
I have made some good use from the lumoth. The only trouble is it does not stay more still. It is all over the place when you want it close by. Also you know the tiny spider light bulb ones? They give good light to.
my choices are adult poptop as a meat shield or as general purpose fighter oogler for same reason as adult poptop but is also faster lumoth for the same reason. sometimes I don't want to use the light augment. sometimes I'd rather have poison resist heat resist healing or health paratail with a bomb collar. so nice it blows up twice, but nutmidge is good for a sacrifice too. paratail however flies and phases through walls kluex sentry with healing 3. it flies and is burly as fuck. even emits a little light.
Well till I can get the old one back I tend to use the fire fox with (unmodded) a healing 3. It is super fast so hits and gets hit a lot but it would heal quick and the fire breath attack destroys multiple enemies at once.

While watching this video I was wondering if I was playing in a very changed version, because I hadn't come across a lot of these pet collars in 50+ hours of playing during this patch (after not playing for a very long time), then found two of them on the very next planet I explored. Crazy how things work sometimes, lol
I just combine a dmg 3+ explosion+light+ healing 3 in a collar combiner then put it on a scranton mech flyng monster,it absolutly wrecks house,and its garenteed to kill its target with the explode collar. Tyey must have patched the pulpid because my scantron out dps's them also they only ever seem to shoot directly up,so there usless lol
What do you think about the Anglure from the Bioluminescence Biome? It has a short-range attack that deals respectable damage, has a decent amount of health, and naturally glows.

Like he said, randomly generated large flying creature. Go to a planet, build up extremely high, and build either left of right until you aggro one. It's worth noting that it probably won't look the same, but it may look even cooler, so it's worth a try.

oh its been over a year since i tried nightly- i went ahead and re downloaded it- me and my friend watched your video over and over trying to figure out how to cat them as pets- whats ironic is we are both competative pokemon players- so we kept telling ourelves "it HAS to work, its just low chance"
my favorite pet is any of the harmless creatures that roam around on planets minding their own business until you come along and poke them with a stick and then they die because they are that weak. they are good because they are completely useless.

I could imagine the slimy one is so op because it was initially made to kill the player. And if a player gets hit he has a few seconds of invincibility where he cannot be hurt. Thus, the slimy guy would only hit once, while against monsters it hits several times. I hope this wasnt patched though. Anyone knows if it is?
Unfortunately, this is no longer true. Captured an adult poptop and it died in less than a second against a tier 4 enemy while I was wearing tier 4 armor. So far, every pet I've tried is the same. One or two hits and they die. Guess I'm going for the light pet. Thanks for the video.
Anyone knows if the large flying monsters have been patched? I've found 5 different of them, however none of them does anything other than just ramming enemies... No breath attack or anything
Except in Starbound, you can completely and utterly ignore catching monsters if you want to. If you don't care for captured pets, just sell the few capture pods you find. In pokemon, those creatures are your only means of self defense and/or attack.

UPD - Omg, the "hunting ground" works! I actually captured another big flying monster there, about 1 hour later (built a teleport) =D

you know somebody made a mod that fixes alot of what is wrong with nightly. you can even play the intro mission.

for some reason i kinda hope they'll add a monster that randomly teleports you other entities (monsters NPC's etc) and itself a round .... imagine having that as a pet
While watching this video I was wondering if I was playing in a very changed version, because I hadn't come across a lot of these pet collars in 50+ hours of playing during this patch (after not playing for a very long time), then found two of them on the very next planet I explored. Crazy how things work sometimes, lol
I just combine a dmg 3+ explosion+light+ healing 3 in a collar combiner then put it on a scranton mech flyng monster,it absolutly wrecks house,and its garenteed to kill its target with the explode collar.
Tyey must have patched the pulpid because my scantron out dps's them also they only ever seem to shoot directly up,so there usless lol

What do you think about the Anglure from the Bioluminescence Biome? It has a short-range attack that deals respectable damage, has a decent amount of health, and naturally glows.

Where did you find the purple cloud winged pet?
Like he said, randomly generated large flying creature. Go to a planet, build up extremely high, and build either left of right until you aggro one. It's worth noting that it probably won't look the same, but it may look even cooler, so it's worth a try.

+Nathan Walls This is the Nightly version. It's a little unstable lately and tends to crash but all of this stuff will eventually be in the official release.
oh its been over a year since i tried nightly- i went ahead and re downloaded it- me and my friend watched your video over and over trying to figure out how to cat them as pets- whats ironic is we are both competative pokemon players- so we kept telling ourelves "it HAS to work, its just low chance"
there is a Fennix pet, i heard those got buffed and they shoot fire deal pretty good dmg
sadly low health got their tail
my favorite pet is any of the harmless creatures that roam around on planets minding their own business until you come along and poke them with a stick and then they die because they are that weak. they are good because they are completely useless.
I hope this is still useful in 1.0, I just bought the game and I'm rather interested in the capture system.
Very useful. The more crew and creatures you have watching your back the better, especially on any difficulty above casual.

i thought the pets were just for being pets... i didnt know you could use them like pokemon... sweet.
I could imagine the slimy one is so op because it was initially made to kill the player. And if a player gets hit he has a few seconds of invincibility where he cannot be hurt. Thus, the slimy guy would only hit once, while against monsters it hits several times.
I hope this wasnt patched though. Anyone knows if it is?

Unfortunately, this is no longer true. Captured an adult poptop and it died in less than a second against a tier 4 enemy while I was wearing tier 4 armor. So far, every pet I've tried is the same. One or two hits and they die. Guess I'm going for the light pet. Thanks for the video.

Except in Starbound, you can completely and utterly ignore catching monsters if you want to. If you don't care for captured pets, just sell the few capture pods you find.
In pokemon, those creatures are your only means of self defense and/or attack.
