I absolutely love your channel, and how you narrate it, is just fabulous. Your lovely relaxing but inviting voice pulls us straight in, to the history your about to inform us about in your latest chapter..... ITS A BRILLIANT IF NOT THE BEST HISTORY CHANNEL ON THE WHOLE OF YOU, TUBE. 100%👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Your voice has such a lovely quality and your narration is fantastic. Thank you for all the work you put into your videos. I live in Ireland and was a tour guide for several years, so I really appreciate the effort put in and how history can be told in an entertaining way. Keep up the good work!
The British army eventually managed to rid itself of class differences and allowed even the lowliest of the low to rise on merit through the ranks. A pity this is not as evident in British industry. Even today, one will still find large UK companies and institutions run by mediocre managing directors and their minions whose only qualification for the job is their public school education and knowing the right people.
What about people who are not ex-Public Schools, who are perfect for ticking boxes with, but prove to be incompetent? No shortage of those! Class war is so outdated, but many who love the class war, cannot see the real war taking place, where ALL classes are under attack. /
in the area of class differences ....Imagine if Percy Hobart's *"Funny's"* as they were called were used by British Tankers instead of being stolen by Rommel! this absolute genius was deliberately held back by his "fellow" officers(due to him not being in their little club) leading to mass loss of life on the allied side, I encourage all to look into it and thank *Quackbang* for educating me on it.
The father of a friend of mine joined the army at the age of 16 in WW2. he went into the recruiting office and when the sergeant as ked his age he said "16". The sergeant told him to take a walk around the block and come back and tell him his real age. There is a husband and wife grave in a cemetery about ten miles from where I live. The husband (who is not in the grave) enlisted in WW1 at the age of 54. needless to say he lied about his age.
Damn. I'm 51 and I know my body would have difficulty living in a wet hole for months at a time. It's a different prospect to being in my late teens/early twenties. I have the utmost respect for that gentleman.
One WW1 Recruiter, I think in Sydney Australia, used to say "you're too young, I refuse to enlist you. Go to the Enlistment Office around the corner, they are less strict".
I can't figure out why the men would take the money from the army recruiters and then hide because it seems to me that they would prefer to keep the money by staying in the army because that is a very good way of getting as they put it three hots and a cot"
😂 Sergeant titswell , sergent badcock...the names must of got some soilders in trouble...1ginny+ 21 I'm just the shilling for a soldier that may never come back I'm really not much has changed when soldiers come back they still don't have somewhere to live today we haven't really advanced I love this channel I really enjoyed this episode
Expect the slang you are ranting about didn't exist then. Is Sgt. Linsworth especially funny to you? No, because lins currently isn't slang for body parts.
As always, beautifully researched, narrated and illustrated. Fact Feast providing the most illuminating and valuable insight into 19th. century lifestyles and philosophy. Loved the satyrical prints and the photographs. In this age preceding the evolution of tax funded social services, amongst the lower classes public attitudes towards the armed forces and empire were far more fatalistically pragmatic and tongue in cheek, than most people can now imagine. At least you had a roof over your head and were provided for... until you became expendable.
And there you go , the birth of Commission only sales reps 👍 When I was a very young lad, my father said to my cousin who signed up for the regulars, ‘You’ve taken the Queen’s shilling’ - thinking he got 5 pence for joining the army and that was it 😂 The saying has been used for a few centuries now and still used today. Brilliant bit of history, I never knew this at all. I knew about press gangs of old and thought that’s how they got about topping up the numbers.
My hubbie was a Paratrooper (2 Para Delta Coy) he got £40 a week at first which wasn't even enough to get him from Aldershot to Hartlepool and back at the weekend!
Joyce, I come from a military family, I chose to be a civilian employee. I saw how badly our Service Personnel were treated in the 80s 90s.. They lavish billions and billions on ludicrous weapon systems and can't pay the Soldiers enough to go to the Laundromat. It infuriates me.
How are you doing sir thank you for wonderful cultural documentary about Victorian era . As always iam gathering main information about topics you mentioned briefly here it’s actually there are purchase of commissions in British army . Commission offices in English and later English army could be purchased for either infantry or cavalry regiments from 17 and 19 th centuries. This avoided need to be prompted for merit or seniority and was usual way to obtain commission in army . Practice began in 1683 during reign of King Charles, continued until was abolished in 1871 as part of cardwell reforms formally, purchase price of commission was cash bond for good behavior, liable to be forfeited if found guilty of cowardice, desertion or gross conduct. Really sir victorian era worth close reading. Good luck to you your loved ones.
a few of my relatives dodged the military in the old days ending up in either America or finding themselves on a convict ship to Australia lol.. a few even defected England and ended up fighting alongside Washington..and I think a few feingned insanity a few times to get out of the army..😂

Thank you so much! I’m happy you like the history and how it’s presented.
I would like to see one on the press ganging of men into the navy as I believe the laws about still exsist to this day

Another fabulously interesting and well narrated peek I to the past. Thank you. You bring us right into the grit of it all.
You’re welcome! Thank you for your comment.

This is the same throughout all British society
Sounds like Labour Party rhetoric all over again - All angst an little substance or worth!

I promise this is all true - I didn’t make it up! That’s a genuine photo of all these men talked about. Even the policeman has a dodgy sounding name!
@@FactFeast 😆but the names are funny how did you know i thought 1 photo was dodgey...ESP

Having trouble recruiting these days too
That is why they had glass bottomed tankards so you could see if they had put the shilling in a glass
I always understood that the glass bottom was to avoid the press gang. As they were drinking up they could see the press gang coming

Another fine video! I rather like that saying "taking the queens shilling". I never heard it put that way before.
Some men took lots of her shillings - and didn’t come back. Glad you liked it!
Thanks FF❤
Thank you very much 😊
Excellent as always!!!🙏✨👌🦉❣️
Thank you! Cheers!
Its sad when Royalty would live in a palace, eat fancy food, expensive clothes, These soldiers were given royalties crumbs. 😮
Bah shut up socialist lol jk
It is one of the constant's throughout history
Collectivism; free market imperialism style
Joyce, I come from a military family, I chose to be a civilian employee. I saw how badly our Service Personnel were treated in the 80s 90s.. They lavish billions and billions on ludicrous weapon systems and can't pay the Soldiers enough to go to the Laundromat. It infuriates me.
What’s new? Nothing has changed.
Wonder if the recruitment for solders in 1877, retained any members who fought in 1879 in the Zulu wars, one of the famous battles was rourke’s drift
What’s the problem- these are good ol’ Victorian values!

Very interesting Khatoon. Thank you for sharing.
The good ole days!😮
When the sun never set on the British Empire or rose on the poor back street proletariat. Britain is certainly not 'great' anymore!
Look at the men in these photographs and then observe the 'men' of today...good isnt it?
i could use a few schillings to get rejected right now lol
Who knew?
If I remember my History the recruiting officers of WWI had to turn away most of the Industrial Cities men for bad health, from rickets and TB,
Lovin the FF
Cheers!
Titswell and Badcock? Seriously? 😆
👍never heard of the word peregrination . But today I have 🙏
It’s a nice word isn’t it? I think it’s appeared in one or two of my videos.
Poverty the best recruiter, todays army across in the uk would struggle with conscription as the enemy lives within?
a few of my relatives dodged the military in the old days ending up in either America or finding themselves on a convict ship to Australia lol..
a few even defected England and ended up fighting alongside Washington..and I think a few feingned insanity a few times to get out of the army..😂
Hmm..so its no different than today..yeah i see that 😅it really is no different
A villain for taking the Queen’s Shilling.
Woooo
Quite.
So much dishonesty.
Press ganging.
Recruiting Sergeants would often find themselves drugged and robbed
Did they get a Pension !
Taken?
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Much appreciated Miji 🙂
Your voice is too male😂😂
Sergeant Titswell 🫢🫡
