  • Why Katie Lou Samuelson Is MORE IMPORTANT Than You Think
    Katie Lou Samuelson Is A VERY IMPORTANT player for the Indiana Fever. But, over the last 11 games, she’s only shooting 24% from the three. Is she worth the misses? In this video, I break it down.

    "What I mean by spacer is a player who spaces the floor." That was... entirely uninformative.

    • @CarterMomon
      @CarterMomon  Месяц назад +42

      Sorry 😂.
      I mean, someone who “stretches” the floor. In other words, a spacer is someone who shoots long distance shots, and their role is to move around the “arc” (the three point line). The main objective of this person being in the game is to “space” the floor; in other words, they space out the defense (since the defense goes with them when they step out to the arc).
      The floor being spaced out can open up the court for other offensive players, which is why a coach may want a spacer on the floor when running a particular offensive set.
      Hope this is “more” helpful.

      This is how I understood it: The only way to have defenders go out to the arc and leave space in the paint is to have credible three point shooters out there that must be guarded, and the only way to be credible is to sink a three the second defenders aren’t guarding you.

    I agree with everything you said Carter. Katy Lou is a great addition to the team because of her i.q., she's always in the right place. I hope she starts knocking down those 3's more consistently, Lexi as well. The pace that the Fever plays with CC running the show wears teams down and the fourth quarter is when they can take over, as long as coach Sides doesn't slow them down and try to play the clock.

      I think it's this - KLS didn't play in the WNBA last season, nor in any of the offseason leagues, so she was out of basketball for a full year, and when she started the season, she wasn't in ideal shape or ideal form, and that's improved over the season, but even now she's not where she would be if she hadn't taken a year off. Also, even a 1-yr-old is still a lot of work, so her available free time to work on her game and get in extra exercise and extra shooting probably is far more limited than most other players on her team, which contributes to the fact that her layoff is still affecting her.

    WNBA players play with WAY more ego than NBA players do. When it's not your night, it's not your night. If you are missing multiple of the same shots in a row, switch your game plan for the night and focus on what you're doing right. When Caitlin is in a game that they are smothering her and she can't get off 3 pointers, she switches to passing and gets her open teammates to make buckets because she cares more about the team winning than her being the one to put up the points.

    This is a good video Carter. I liked how you included important stats, evaluated just one player, and mentioned both good things and bad things. The things you mentioned were reasonable and well supported and cohesive.
    There were a couple of places where your comments went beyond evaluating KLS and those comments were not well supported, were mainly just your opinions and I didn't appreciate them nearly as much nor did I find them reasonable like the rest of the video. One of these comments was where you said the Fever had 4 or 5 bad defenders starting. AB is slower but she also plays the 5 spot, and she guards for the most part 5s or 4s, who are also slower. AB has improved her defense since last season and since the beginning of the season. Among players with 10+ games, she's currently #3 on the Fever in Defensive Win Shares behind TF and EW. CC has also improved her defense a lot this season. She's currently #4 on the Fever in Defensive Win Shares. KLS is #5. LH is #6. Now, you seem to have this high regard for LH despite her piss poor offensive production and mediocre defensive production, claiming LH "brings something no one else on the Fever does". You really should limit your comments about LH to a video about LH, not here. Whatever this mystical "something" is, it doesn't cause LH to play statistically better defense than AB, or CC, or KLS. So it must not be all that important. Because TF, EW, AB, CC, and KLS also bring "something" and that "something" causes them to be statically higher rated defenders than LH.
    After the break, if TF is healthy and wins a starting spot back like she did earlier in the season, so the starting lineup is AB, TF, KLS, KM, CC I think you will start to see a big difference in the overall defense. KM like EW is short so that limits who she can guard, but EW is a far, far better defender than KM. But KM is better on offense. They usually try to hide KM on the worst opposing guard because she's the most limited. CC has more length but is slender so she can match up with more players than KM can, though she's too slender to try to defend bigs inside or even some 3s in the league inside. She can provide good help defense on these as she has quick hands. KLS is a very flexible defender, perfect for guarding 3's but is solid against many players if she switches onto them. TF is also a very flexible defender, able to match up with bigs yet also slender and fast enough to challenge smaller players. AB you put on the their slow-footed big and that's a very good defensive unit. The only big weakness is Kelsey Mitchell but again you hope to hide her. This is also a unit that can score a lot of points. TF is probably the most experienced pick and roll big on the Fever so they can run that through TF or change it up sometimes and run it through AB. Just a lot of options. But if you use TF in the pick and roll everyone else can shoot from range so can spread the floor. TF can shoot from mid-2 range pretty well not from 3 so well.
    That said, I also strongly disagreed with your opinion that the Fever should start AB, KLS, LH, EW, CC. First, KLS doesn't have the frame to play serious minutes guarding most bigs in the league. She can play limited backup minutes, but she will get pushed around and abused against most bigs in the league especially if forced to play extended minutes. You say you know basketball so you should know it takes a LOT of energy if you're a smaller player trying to match up on a bigger player, to play some backup minutes at the, say, 4 spot. KLS can't maintain that against most bigs in the league if she's playing starter's minutes. There might be 1 or maybe 2 teams they can try that with, but with the majority it won't work. Also, LH is a mediocre talent who is bad on offense. The best use of LH is if she's extremely fresh. So that's why Coach Sides does things like start KLS at the 3 (KLS is a better statistical defender than LH and MUCH better offensive player) and then play LH limited backup minutes before maybe bringing her in the 4th Q to close out the game, but that only works because LH is still relatively fresh at that point having sat most the game up to then. If you start LH, then you don't have the ball of energy to close the game out, and you just have a really mediocre player out there who is an anchor on your offense.
    Really the comparison is TF vs LH. TF is #1 on the Fever in Defensive Win Share, LH is #6. TF is a much better offensive player than LH. TF has a lot more size and strength than LH. Both are slender players who can run, but TF is an expert at the pick and roll and gives that option to CC while LH does not. TF is also a much better shooter and scorer than LH from the mid-2 range in (neither are impressive from the 3). And most importantly, TF can guard opposing bigs, and LH cannot. I mean, LH can for brief periods if forced to, if because of switches or whatever she ends up guarding one, but it takes a TON of energy especially inside. LH can't do that while playing starters' minutes just like KLS can't. But TF can. TF is far superior to LH in every way, on offense, on defense, on creating the defensive matchups the Fever need, etc. You say LH has "something" but she doesn't have the frame to play as a big and TF does.
    If the Fever run your suggested starting 5 of AB, KLS, LH, EW, CC they will be terrible the rest of the season and in the playoffs. So, I'm pretty sure the Fever coaches want to win so they won't run that. They could experiment with that if someone has a smallish 4 and TF is hurt. But if TF is healthy it would be a BAD idea not to start her.

    You said Lexi Hull brings another dimension, but didn’t describe what that is. Lexi is a taller and longer than she looks. She’s very athletic and is a good defender, perhaps the best on the team at creating and/or chasing down loose balls. I think the team defense is better with Lexi.

Coaches train their teams to play back on Nalyssa Smith, because she gets her points on the drive, not taking outside shots. (Good coaches teach their players who to play tight and who to play loose. I''m sure Christy Sides doesn't do this. I don't think she has the "coach IQ" for this.)

    Every player will have their day. KLS was shooting so badly from 3 that she started turning down wide open shots, that indicates a severe lack of confidence,, somthing a so-called shooter cannot afford to do. I would have said her % was even less than you mentioned , seemed more like 1 for 10 from my eyes. You are correct that is the reason she is on the court to shoot 3's . For my money a better player to use would Be Grace Berger and another coach besides Sides would do that , but for some reason she has been put on the back burner. Currently KLS gives the team nothing,,, I would like to hope she will get back to where she was before childbirth, might be asking too much. Something that gripes my a.. more than anything are the wide open layups missed,, per Hull , Mitchell,,, guess they would rather look cool than score a layup.

    Hi Carter, great stuff. Can you make a video about Charli Collier and how she can help CC and Fever to improve their roster. Charli is the #1 pick that was waived by Dallas

    • @NADRIPmusic
      @NADRIPmusic Месяц назад +1

      The 2021 WNBA draft (the COVID year) was historically weak, so #1 in that draft isn't saying much. Collier is a known quantity and free agent since last season despite some teams being desperate to sign players (like LA picked up Fever 2022 1st round pick C Queen Egbo on a hardship contract then cut her after 7 days). The point is they picked up Egbo before Collier. I don't think a player like that is likely to improve anyone's roster. If any WNBA team thought she was, they would have signed her.
      That's not to say that Charli Collier is a bad player - she's not. It's just that in a 12 team league there's only enough room for the highest quality players and some good players like Collier aren't making the cut. I am glad the league will be expanding as it will give marginal players like Collier a better chance to hang around and who knows? - maybe improve.
      But although Collier isn't bad she's also not WNBA quality at this point, or at best she's marginal, not the type of player who will make a team better.

      @@nr14989 I don't think Charli is any WNBA team's answer. Not sure what you're qualifications are to make that assessment but here's some comments from her scouting report before the draft in 2021:
      OUTSIDE SHOOTING "Collier doesn't step away from the basket on a consistent basis" "She's shooting 44 percent on all jump shots this season per Synergy Sports, and is at 31.6 percent from 3-point land. Not standout numbers" "however, she operates primarily in and around the paint."
      STRUGGLES AGAINST WNBA LEVEL COMPETITION "you can't ignore the fact that she is often bigger, stronger and more athletic than her opponents, which certainly makes life easier. Or, at least, it does until she faces opponents who aren't overmatched. Most of Collier's worst games this season came against other elite players and teams:
      10 points (5 of 20 FG) vs. Oklahoma State on Jan. 27
      2 points (1 of 3 FG) vs. Baylor on Feb. 14
      12 points (3 of 9 FG) vs. Baylor on March 1
      Against Natasha Mack of Oklahoma State, Collier was often forced into awkward and off-balance attempts, even when she was able to get into good position down low. Now, Mack is one of the best defenders in the country, but this is the type of competition Collier will face on a regular basis in the WNBA."
      ASSISTS VS TURNOVERS "One of the first things to jump out when you are initially scanning Collier's stats is that she only has 12 assists all season. And if you include her entire collegiate career, it's just 33 assists in 86 games.
      She's a center so it's not like you'd expect her to be at the top of the leaderboards, but it does make you scratch your head a bit, especially when you notice that she's turned the ball over 73 times -- or 2.9 times per game"
      "it's never good to have a 0.2 assist-to-turnover ratio. And when you look at the tape, it's not hard to tell why that's the case. Collier can get tunnel vision when she has the ball down low, and struggled when teams threw multiple defenders at her. On plays logged as 'hard double teams' by Synergy Sports, Collier turned the ball over 25 percent of the time."
      DEFENSIVE ISSUES "Her positional awareness is suspect at times -- both in terms of guarding the post and losing track of the ball in help defense" "The main issue on that end is that she has trouble staying on the floor. She averages three fouls per game, which ranks way down in the 7th percentile in NCAA per Her Hoops Stats, and has fouled out of six of the Longhorns' 25 games."
      WEAK DRAFT INFLATED HER DRAFT POSITION "In other years she probably wouldn't be getting buzz as a No. 1 pick" "it's hard to see her coming in and changing a franchise" www.cbssports.com

    • @NADRIPmusic
      @NADRIPmusic Месяц назад

      @@nr14989 No, she doesn't. Here's some highlights from Charli Collier's scouting report before she was drafted.
      Shooting: plays mostly in the paint, shot only 44% on all jump shots, including mostly ones very close to the basket, 31% from 3. Against better defenders similar to ones in WNBA her shooting was far, far worse, and she struggled, as she mostly faced weak opposition (players who she had a big size mismatch against).
      Assists/Turnovers. Extremely low assists and assist/turnover ratio of 0.2 which is awful. When she faced a "hard double-team," she turned the ball over 25% of the time.
      Defense: Poor positional sense. Gets in foul trouble a lot even against weaker opposition. Fouled out 6 of 25 games her final college season.
      Since then, she's proven all these concerns were justified. That's why she's a free agent. If she was better than NS or anyone else in the WNBA, she'd be in the league. 12 teams passed on her for a reason.

    1:04 - interesting +18 (+/-) stat from K.L.Samuelson when she's on the floor. Nice.
    1:50 - I think all the Fever personnel have high basketball IQ; seems difficult to secure a roster spot in any WNBA team ...
    2:28 - Nice analysis of K.L.S. as a spacer vs N.Smith.
    3:47 - Poor clip selection, imo. K.L.S. is playing good defense, with both hands up in the air; she's boxing out with her eyes too when the ball's released. Opposing team seems to be simply running a set.
    5:20 - This is Coach Sides offensive vision, playing inside-out basketball; yet she's a horrible coach?
    5:45 - Agree, K.L.S. is a good 3-pt shooter.
    6:07 - Poor clip selection, imo. Ideally, K.L.S. should have one foot in the paint, and one foot out. K.L.S gambled. That's why the defender capitalized and passed the ball.
    8:33 - Good clip and analysis of K.L.S. spacing with her gravity.
    9:58 - Again, this is Sides inside-out offensive vision.
    11:20 - Do you have a +/- stats that support your desired lineup, or is this personnel lineup something you shot from your hip?
    11:52 - Your desired personnel lineup is based off of one game? You realize that NBA coaches experiment with several preseason games before committing to a starting lineup.
    12:32 - What is that "element" of Lexis Hull that you like? Defense, 3 pt shooting, communication?

    • @NADRIPmusic
      @NADRIPmusic Месяц назад

      She doesn't have the frame to play PF more than limited minutes, against most PF's in the WNBA. There are maybe 1 or 2 she could play more than just limited minutes against. But her frame is that of a 3, not a 4. She's a gutsy player who will give high effort if asked to defend against bigs, but she doesn't have the frame to do that against most of them and gets pushed around. She was playing limited minutes at the 4 earlier in the season, but that's because both TF and DD were hurt, so the Fever's best option was to ask KLS to play some minutes as a big to give AB and NS brief rests. However, it's a misconception to believe she could or should be playing major minutes a the 4 spot - against a lot of WNBA teams she simply doesn't have the size/frame to do that and will get pushed around - not because she gives up but because they're a lot bigger and stronger. She's a natural 3 and that's where she should play normally.

    Why do people say Katie Lou Samuelson is a bad player ? Katie Lou is a good player as you noted CWC. Katie Lou is an asset to the team, who has her own specific talent and skill set that contributes to the team's orchestrated play scoring.
    I like Katie Samuelson and Lexi Hull who both do a great job, are talented, has their specific skill set who aides Caitlin Clark in executing offensive and defensive play, point scoring - It's up to the coach to best utilize each player to their asset abilities in any coordinated strategic offense and or defense play, which in Katie Lou's case her defense skill is vital, as stated by Mr Carter
    What I don't like is when racist Caitlin Clark old guard self-anointed elitist haters like Cheryl Reeves, Dawn Staley, Diana Taurasi, most esp Sheryl Swoopes trying to diminish, de-legitimize Caitlin Clark by propping up other players like Katie Lou Samuelson as better then Caitlin Clark.

      Sheryl Swoopes said Chicago Sky needs Angel Reese, who without will not make the playoffs .. yet last year Chicago Sky made the playoffs without Angel Reese .. who said Indiana Fever has more talented players than Caitlin Clark, ie; Katie Lou Samuelson, hence Indiana Fever doesn't need Caitlin Clark to make the playoffs .. yet Indiana Fever hadn't made the playoffs since 2016.
      This is but example of the truly outright slanderous lies that the CC haters try to give credence of legitimacy to.
      Caitlin Clark is a 3 dimensional player who has literally revolutionized WNBA Women's Basketball to a new level, rewriting the records books with every game she plays, as the leader on the court making the plays, driving the pace makes her teammates even better, upping their game without even realizing it, is the true measure of greatness, is without a doubt the WNBA League's ROTY and MVP, the greatest woman's basketball player of all time - in my humble opinion.. which is why the WNBA old guard elites hates CC, because it means that their basketball talent and skill is not what they think it is in whatever capacity measurement they choose, in comparison to Caitlin Clark.
      The real generational talent and box office draw is Caitlin Clark, and Entertainment Corporations, Networks know this.
