It was January 23rd, 2018 on the beautiful islands of Hawaii. Chloe was fast asleep when she was woken up by her Mother who was running through the house and telling everyone to hurry up, quick get out of bed, and pack their bags.
Chloe was still groggy and half asleep, so she got up slow, stumbled into the bathroom, then headed to her sister's room to find out what all the commotion was about and what was going on. But, her sister was frantically trying to pack a suitcase for herself and her daughter, Chloe's niece, and she looked totally freaked out. She didn't answer, just ran around the room throwing things into her suitcase, totally distracted.
Chloe wandered into the living room, grabbed her phone and turned it on, waiting to see messages and new posts, but instead what she saw scared her half to death: "ALERT - INBOUND BALLISTIC MISSILE/BOMB THREAT. SEEK SHELTER NOW." And it wasn't just Chloe and her family, or just one of the islands, it was everyone in the state of Hawaii - they all got that alarm on their phones, on TV and on the radio. The Emergency Broadcast System, and all of the alarms on the islands went off.
That sent Chloe into action and she rushed to her room to pack a bag - the whole time though, she and everyone else, really thought that this was it, that they might die.
Chloe's Mom's best friend actually had a bomb shelter under her house that was meant to protect them from any type of bomb or missile threat, so the whole family piled into the car - Chloe's sisters and Uncle and nieces - and went to their friend's house.
They ran downstairs into the shelter while her Mom and their friend started bringing supplies downstairs to prepare for the supposed missile attack - canned goods and bottled water, blankets and first aid supplies - panicked and frantic and frightened.
They turned on the television, waited for news and instructions, and, after what seemed like forever, a newscaster came on and told them, and everyone, it was a false alarm. A FALSE ALARM! And, while they were totally and completely relieved, they were also a little bit confused and angry! How could a false or fake alarm like this happen? How could they cause such a huge panic about a bomb or a missile, and have it last so long, and then just come on the air waves and just say "oh, sorry - our bad." The word was that someone supposedly pressed the wrong button. Wrong button?!?!
It was the scariest moment of Chloe's life, and probably everyone else's on Hawaii too - almost 1.5 Million people freaking out and afraid that they were literally minutes from being attacked. Missle defence.
And, even though it was so scary, ultimately it really helped Chloe appreciate all that was in her life, her family, her island, and to live every day with appreciation!

I remember this! I was in Colorado but my dad was in Hawaii since he is military and we had to sell the house. Around 11 AM in the morning my mom was on the phone bc my dad was saying his FINAL GOODBYE. By the way, he was one of the first people to find out was false. He actually was the one who calmed down everyone in the barracks building.

monkey this alarm for all I know wasn't a mistake, 1 the military leaders from our of state were in Hawaii that week and throughout the weekend when we got the missile alarm, 2 the man who was accused for falsely pulling the alarm was already old and ready to retire, by the way he's in the firkin military idk after being in the forces for so long people like him don't if not ever make a mistake like that, 3 the old man is either covering up for a younger personnel or dare I say something, 4 This false alarm only hit the 808 numbers not the phone numbers from out of state which I also find quiet odd if this was a legitimate missile alert for everyone in the states and even concerning some thing like the US I think everyone would've gotten the message, 5 they were testing out the air raid and bomb sirens THAT WEEK ON TUESDAY I was joking around with a friend on that day during testing saying we got to be ready for when Kim Jung un decides to bomb us. Do some research because this one gets interesting.

I live in California and my sister, her husband , her son, brother and I wanted to go to Hawaii so we Did and we got there on January 13. We landed and saw everyone freaking out so many ppl where at the airport trying to leave and we asked someone what’s going on and somebody yelled there’s a bomb heading this way and I almost FAINTED I was like “Great time to land right?” And then we hear it was a false alarm and we were so relived and confused

I live in Hawaii. I remember I was in a baseball tournament and we were doing warmups and getting ready because it was gonna be a long day (triple header). And then like a horror movie, I heard screaming and everyone started running. Everyone was running for their cars (don’t ask me why, I’ll never know). My team hid inside a little brick maintenance building and we waited for what felt like hours. Then our coaches just told us that it was a false alarm. And we just kinda pretended it never happened. The scary part to me was how empty the park was. Four empty baseball fields. Dugouts and bullpens still with gloves and bats laying around, the tents with chairs and tables with food, the rows of gloves laying on the floor as we just drops the gloves and ran. It was scary and it still gives me chills remembering what I saw. (Kalawai Tournament Kauai!)
I did hear about this. It was a false alert. The person who accidentally sent the report out was fired right away. If you were in Hawaii during this alert I hoped you stayed safe. P.S. I love ya Storybooth!

Oh it was horrible, my grandma in Hawaii was calling and we were all crying, she was literally about to buy a ticket for any plane that would be going out of Hawaii THAT DAY (she doesn’t own a shelter and doesn’t know anyone that does)

About the part you didn't get, the way the Emergency Alert System works is that the message was a pre-written message by the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency. And when you write it, it says "are you sure you want to send this out?" and there are 2 buttons you click on Yes and No so what probably happened is that an employee accidentally clicked Yes.
I live on Kauai and I panicked a lot... So I ate a lot of food cuz I thought I was gonna die and food was the only thing I thought of._. And I cried too.. Oof

I also live in Hawaii, it was scary. When the alert came in, I was at the Kauai Regional Science Olympiad. Everyone there panicked. The supervisors handled the situation very well and the situation settled down. This, alongside an accident in Hanamaulu that delayed some of the competitors, resulted in the supervisors giving us all an opportunity to go to the 2018 HSSO State Finals at Mililani High School. The bottom placing teams of both divisions, however, decided not to join us. Still, it was a great experience.
