Well Wes, you do not mention what is of most importance: that human beeings think in language respectively language is the tool how consciously we can form our inner world of the outside world, how we can put issues into relationship to each other, etc, etc, and deal with it in our mind. First, when we grow up, we take the language from the outside world and later, for those who get awarness, we can form our own personality after the language we use in thinking (what we try to use and avoid) - up to a certain and well set extend at least. And then there is another issue I want to mention: one of the greatest stupidities of mankind's history is how much languages were taken and filled with qualities, i.e. who speaks German has this or those qualities and is therefore "German", who speaks Russian "Russian", etc, etc. - it is a stupid kind of language nationalism. And last but not least: mind controll is language controll - what people should have in their minds and what is punished. That is and has always been the way and goal and behaviour of authoritarian organisations and powers, e.g. the Catholic Church, the Communists, the Fashists and Nazis, the Maoists and even the hardcore Capitalists. Those who are in hardcore power flood us with their information day and night, want us to go along with their terms and conceptions only, and want to avoid that people get an independent way of thinking and seeing the world their own way.

I am dubious about the Erasmus portion of the lecture. Erasmus may have insisted that "the Word" be translated as "conversation," but the original Greek word is "logos," which conveys a hell of a lot more.

Hi prof, I have attentively listen to a no of your talks. Always great.
One little point; why learn a language....if one day, one gets an electronic translation widget....
I am an european born in central africa and on the farm, we all learned french and swahili naturally so.
then on moving to zambia, we went on with talking in english and the mines language "fanigalo". It is a mix of swahili, zulu et others and made me richer as I could attain a wide audience.
then in south africa, I found that my other belgian language, netherlands/flemish was of great help to jump into afrikaans and again this language is spoken in RSA, zimbabwe and namibia.
Zulu being a nguni language is very much like swahili for verbs et animal name and other expression so it was rather an issue of being attentive and willing. that is all.
what a pleasure to have knowledge or some knowledge of other languages; i feel very rich indeed and it is fun.
But I do understand your point of an electronic translation...sounds good.

From the introduction you had me waiting for a take-down of Pinker that never really came. Still, quite a good lecture nonetheless. Will be looking forward to whatever lectures you intend to upload in future.

the distinction between global WARMING and CLIMATE CHANGE is that WARMING is only one aspect of CLIMATE CHANGE. Also "GLOBAL WARMING" was misunderstood by most people, who didn't know the difference between climate and weather.

Babelfish should solve the problem before we get to choose a universal language.
We also need to consider a language that can be understood by machines because we will not only communicate with fellow humans but increaseaingly comunicate with aritificial intelligences.
