If you want further proof of how brilliant Stanley McChrystal is, see his amazing TED Talk titled "Listen, learn... then lead." That talk does a phenomenal job of illustrating the activities and characteristics of transformational leaders. Highly recommended!!!

I would like to address the comments below. A better choice. I am not sure if this is because how his military career ended or something else. I disagree, true leaders struggle, they are unsure, more importantly they are humble and don’t always have the answer but they know how to get the most out of their staff. I think his message to the class was clear, humble your self as a leader get to know everyone in your charge and capitalize on the strengths.
For the individual who said he served with McChrystal in AFG. I am not sure where you were at on his staff, I looked at your picture and I don’t recognize you; I am sure you served in AFG during his time just don’t know where.
McChrystal wouldn’t know me from Adam if he saw me walking down the street, but this I can assure you - a great leader he is.
Over the course of seven years I served somewhere on his staff at Ft Bragg, Iraq and AFG and this I can assure you a remarkable leader he is. He was given a shit sandwich and through it all he did the impossible everyday. I have listened to many of his talks in person and on the web and what ultimately rings true, he cared, he was honest, he is humble, he is a great communicator and I for one am great full to have witnessed his leadership first hand. The message he delivered her was honest and true. Too many of our leaders today won’t admit they don’t know, don’t trust their staff and they think they are the smartest guy in the room - - the reality is they are the ones who do the most harm.
Good luck to commenters, but I would ask you to ask your self this, if you were to give a speech to this class what would it be, what would you tell upcoming leaders. I will ask my sons who now serve in Special Operations to listen to this speech and head the wisdom.

All the kids in the class think they know everything... here comes the 4star humble hero "I dont know". Hopefully they understand.
General McCrystal might not remember who gave his speech or what it was about... but I'm sure the audience will.

All I know is that leadership is a choice only independent thinkers can truly make.
Stars on a shoulder board or stripes on a sleeve do not a leader make.
Ultimately, people follow courage. Full stop.

I don't know, but there had to be a better choice for the Class of 2016. All things considered, not a bad speech. Class of 2017, please start your search earlier.

Big mistake! I was in Afghanistan when this guy took over. He's a terrible leader and plays up to politics.

All of you people have been played. Big times. Afghanistan is inhabitants by Israelites. America has been set up big times. In the end, people won't say Jews did it. They will say Americans allowed it.
