I know little of classical music. But I absolutely love this movement and have heard it hundreds of times (thanks to RUclips) from many different pianists. And I must say that this interpretation flows so beautifully - it feels seamless. I have never heard it played so smoothly. It sounds so lush.
I heard Quincy Jones say that he judged a musician first by whether they played the right tempo. For me Kempff really nails it from the beginning. It feels so natural and flows so elegantly.
This is by far the best interpretation of this piece of classic. I could listen to this all day long. I remember hearing this piece in grade school but forgot about it. Heard it again on "Magic of Belle Island" & had to find it. Absolutely in love with this Sonata. I hear & feel so much emotion from it.
Same here, I love the movie and couldn't imagine it without this beautiful piece by Beethoven. It perfectly projects the emotions and romantic theme of the story.
Utterly beautiful...reminds me if the Dad ...he sang in the church choir as a boy...a hymn was set to those second movement..Psalm I think ' my help even cometh from the Lord ..who made Heaven and Earth' sentimental....
His favor of lyricism an shape over technical brilliance is why his playing is so superior. There is so much life in the music and Kempff does it more than justice
There are many, many great (and quite different) interpretations of this music. But I really love the human warmth and sensitivity of Wilhelm Kempff's playing.
This is so beautiful. Beethoven was a genious, this is music for the spirit, it literally makes me imagine things, places I never been to, it reminds me of memories I thought lost. Amazing.
I have heard this interpretation so many times, and I feel that the piece comes to life in another way than other slower interpretations. For me slower interpretations aims to make the piece more romantic, but this one is the most elegant - for me. Fantastic
This sonata reminds me of my daughter Amanda playing it on her keyboard. When I listening it, the emotion still the same as I felt then. The longing is even bigger.
Every sunday morning this would come on - some Detroit radio program in the 60's and 70's. Massive memories of my working class parents and their love for classical music.
What a piece! I heard a snatch of it maybe 20 year ago and fell in love with it. Alas, I did not know where to find it. Today, I heard it again in the movie 'Unthinkable', Googled and here I am! Serendipity!
I would have to agree, Kempff has a bit more feeling to it. Barenboim's version is also amazing but I just feel Kempff's emotion more so than other versions. In all honestly I listen to both one after the other since both are just amazing and contain so much body and feelings.
Barenboim is too slow for me .. this is just so spot on to my ears.. nothing beats Barenboim's technique, but sometimes he is too fast and other times too slow.. to my ears.. Kempff is my all time favorite pianist
As I always say: Taste cannot be discussed! Especially music. Music is played from our hearts/feelings and in the same way we listen to it. Therefore - as a conclusion: We can both have right - because we play and listen to music from the "depth" in ourselves. So - go on and play and listen and have a good life all of you!
Probably the prettiest Sonata that Beethoven ever wrote. Hiromi Uehara, the incredible Japanese jazz pianist, did a version of this Sonata that was beautiful and in a jazz idiom. You can Google Hiromi and can find the you tube under 'The Trio Project". Hiromi starts out in the classical form and interchanges within the jazz format.
well in 2 years the eejits of the world have not found this they are much too busy watching their phones telling them what idiots they are and they have no idea how stupid they are
Wow, so great, what musicianship - clarity, definition, motion. I really love it and respect Wilhelm. It's not my favorite way to hear it played though, I like it a little more murky and nostalgic/reflective with a hint more self conscious expression (whatever that means?). But, for those who like this version, I can see why, he's amazing.
That is the best interpretation of Sonata No. 8 'Pathetique' Mov. 2 i have ever heard and i really appreciate those by Freddie Kempf and Yundi Li, and Barenboim's version doesn't have the depth but, Wilhelm Kempff by far the best..
being from vienna (doebling) originally - it is near heiligenstadt. to think i have walked probaly the same streets often like him, mozart etc....i worked at the hofburg in vienna and at schoenbrunn. so much history.......
I first heard this piece (not the Kempff version specifically) in Infinity Blade III and have loved it ever since. Now, seeing as the game is pretty much forgotten at this point, the piece now has an added layer of melancholy for me.
Someone else said it was a little too slow, which just goes to show how subjective these opinions are. It is certainly not way too fast! These performances by Kempff are amongst the most highly regarded. He was steeped in the tradtion of Beethoven.
@nuberojadom001 i could not agree more. what amazes me is that pieces like the moonshine sonata and the second movement of the pathetique are such soft music, composed by a bitter, sick man....but a genius. beethoven was one. they will play beethoven, mozart etc in 500 years and more from now, provided mankind will still be around.....
I enjoyed this interpretation of such a stunningly beautiful piece of music. The tempo is faster than in some modern recordings (eg Barenboim) and the playing less worked. The effect is more cheering as well as uplifting.
I love to see the big white moon a shining in the sky I love to see the little stars when shadow clouds go by I love the raindrops falling on my rooftop in the night I love the soft wind sighing before the dawn's grey light
The world lost the very finest pianist with the death of this incredible man! I thank You Tube so much for bringing some of his recordings back to enjoy.
Wilhelm Kempff is in my book the ultimate interpreter of Beethoven's piano works. Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, the one we now know as Lenin, proclaimed that listening to Pathetique almost dissuaded him from becoming a fanatic revolutionary. At least that surly murderer had some insight
Here we have a masterpiece. If the 9th symphony, 4th movement has inside it the Ode to joy, this movement has inside another great melody, such "Ode to peace". It's like the peace, or a light beam after the storm. The hope that life will be fine after the disaster, after the calamity.
He plays with love for the music, not to steal the thunder of the composer. In honoring, there is greatness.
Great tempo and natural, unpretentious playing.
yes, thank you !
I know little of classical music.
But I absolutely love this movement and have heard it hundreds of times (thanks to RUclips) from many different pianists.
And I must say that this interpretation flows so beautifully - it feels seamless. I have never heard it played so smoothly. It sounds so lush.
A quite famous Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius. said once to Mr. Kempff that "you don't play like a pianist, you play like a human being." !😁
Richard Järnefelt what a beautiful and fitting description. I agree, he does 🙂
Thanks for this quote!
I heard Quincy Jones say that he judged a musician first by whether they played the right tempo. For me Kempff really nails it from the beginning. It feels so natural and flows so elegantly.
That's exactly how I first judge a musician: how closely do they follow the tempo as is written, and if not, as it should most likely sound.
I thought it was a bit fast.
A little quicker and it would be perfection IMHO
@@TechTins_Projects beauty is in the eye of the beholder
This is by far the best interpretation of this piece of classic. I could listen to this all day long. I remember hearing this piece in grade school but forgot about it. Just watched Once More aka belle Isle and I had to find the song. It took a while but I'm glad I got here :)
I, too, heard it on "Magic of Belle Island" and had to look it up.
Same here, I love the movie and couldn't imagine it without this beautiful piece by Beethoven. It perfectly projects the emotions and romantic theme of the story.
you should check out barenboim both amazing interpretations but also very different.
BEAUTIFUL...one of my favourite recordings. Perfect tempo indeed.
Awesome. Exceptional technical skills enable Wilhelm to deliver a wide range of mood changes in this classic tune.
I think if Beethoven was alive he would live this interpretation from the great maestro Kempf
Pierre LOBERT and S Richter too
The emotion of the performance brings tears to my eyes.
Utterly beautiful...reminds me if the Dad ...he sang in the church choir as a boy...a hymn was set to those second movement..Psalm I think ' my help even cometh from the Lord ..who made Heaven and Earth' sentimental....

I love this classical piece
A beautiful rendering of this piece. Kempff's notes are very clear but also fluid and beautifully presented.
I can't imagine a more perfect piano piece
This is so beautiful. Beethoven was a genious, this is music for the spirit, it literally makes me imagine things, places I never been to, it reminds me of memories I thought lost. Amazing.
very beautiful AND consistent. The second part is really a second part, not just an unclear something, like with many other interprets...
Kempff was fluent in Beethovenese. Beautifully done, as always.
I have heard this interpretation so many times, and I feel that the piece comes to life in another way than other slower interpretations. For me slower interpretations aims to make the piece more romantic, but this one is the most elegant - for me. Fantastic
amazing how emotional a piece of music from 300 years ago can be
I love Beethoven, this is simply beautiful.
This sonata reminds me of my daughter Amanda playing it on her keyboard. When I listening it, the emotion still the same as I felt then. The longing is even bigger.
best performance i heard!
this is amazing, every little detail is just perfect, really!
superb!

Great music, very soothing
I love it

Brilliant
omg, this is the best tune I know, wonderful, this is teardrops
Bless the Lord,
O, bless the Lord my soul!
With all my being
Bless, bless His holy name...
Wilhelm Kempff is my favorite pianist to whom I listen.
This song is so depressing yet so happy at the same time. My god.
What a marvellous piece !
Ooooh!!! Stratospherical performance. He played with his soul and from his interior. Excellent!
He knew how to bring sound to listeners' hearts. The greatest echo I've had in mine.
me too
i think he got it just right
and his interpretation is superb :)

There is no more to say. This is wonderful music! Thank you!
It makes me sad to hear such a beautiful interpretation and see a picture of Wilhelm Kempff Oh what a great pianist
Awesome recording!
Beautiful piano playing ! Thank you for posting :)
The softness! Beautiful! New landscapes, new stories...fantastic! I'm not convinced by 4:08 - 4:44, but the rest is quite Beautiful!
i love this recording; i think he plays at just the right tempo.
probably the best piano music ever

Herr Kempff plays the most soulful Beethoven, IMO.

Thanks a lot for this sweetest melody!
Sublime!!
É música para gente grande de alma. Minha avó, mucisista, amava a Patética.
sounds so much better in this slightly faster tempo! i like his interpretation a lot!
That's so wonderful! I'm learning this piece now.
He played it exactly as it was written, it is speaking how good the piece is without chanign anything.
Had that authentic 1700's sound. Just takes you right back!!
This is so beautiful ! Heard it played tonight in a movie " The Magic of Belle Isle ".
What a fantastic piece of music!
At last, a recording of this movement which doesn't drag. I love the tempo - it flows so much better than slower renditions.
I think its just beautiful
Just beautiful

this is one of the piece that i really like

"because we play and listen to music from the "depth" in ourselves. " what a wonderful comment!!!
