That scene where Lance is telling Sheila about losing (for the nonce) his daughter. Then we see a shadow crossing her face and realize, omg, she has lost a child. The moment passes because Lance is too self-absorbed to notice her distress. It's a devastating and incredibly subtle piece of acting on Sophie's part.
I have worked in the tv and film industry for forty years and this series and the cast are the top of its game …a remarkable show of excellence in film making….
I can’t see there ever being a tv series being made as good as this. Everyone can relate to any of the characters in this series. It makes you laugh and cry. Sheila’s lemonade 😂😂😂😂😂
There is a moment in series 3 when Sheila is sitting on a tree branch and Terry is watching her from afar with a loving smile on his face. It was a fleeting moment you could almost have missed, but wonderful and deeply touching.
That's when he found a button on a beautiful summer's day and saw his wife smiling at him. You can see on his face, "this is as good as life gets". I hope to be as happy as that one day!
that episode has several moments like that - when Varna makes that find, Becky and Toni and the wine, even when Lance and Phil find common ground around 1978, plus of course Becky and Andy winning the auction for the cottage. That episode oozes love and human connection. It may well be the best episode of any programme, ever. Who else watches it with tears of joy rolling down their cheeks?
Her character is a beautiful kind soul. The way that Terry looks at her is inspirational. Find someone to look at you with such warm love in their eyes.
Yes and she’s so patient! And into it just because Terry loves it. The time they do the stake out and the club asks him whether he’s coming and he states with clarity that Sheila is more important. Can’t remember the line but as an obsessive detectorist myself - it was terrific reminder
Without a doubt, one of my favourite characters in The Detectorists. Sophie coveys such depth and richness to her role as Sheila. Season 2 when she is talking to Lance in the pub garden, we see her pain and feel the loss that she keeps hidden. Brilliant actress.
I've watched that episode several times, but that scene always hits me like a ton of bricks. It's brutal, but in the best way possible. So well written, so well acted, and so well directed. The fact Lance isn't even really paying attention to what she's saying. He's too self-absorbed to even notice what she's really talking about. It's so well done, and so true to life.
I can remember when we were first introduced to Sheila & Terry, and thinking to myself "Ah, there's grief here. Probably the loss of a child, maybe miscarriages or stillbirths". Sheila seems numb, and slightly distanced from reality; shell-shocked by her past trauma, but also by cocooning herself in a protective veil of manufactured happiness. Add to this their constant need to fill their time with dance classes, that "need to be doing", to blot out the grief. So when she has that moment in the pub garden, I cried hot tears on her behalf. Beautifully written. Wonderfully Acted.
I love that scene where her and Lance are talking about his daughter, you can tell there is some major loss in her life that we never get to find out about by the way she talks to him. Brilliant writing and acting.
I adore Sophie Thompson. She always brings so much to her characters (my favorite Miss Bates). Sheila is so special, and as many of you have already pointed out, OMG the picnic table scene. My husband always gets teary eyed at the last scene together, when Terry holds up the button and Sheila smiles and waves. Pure contentment. That we should all be lucky enough to experience this, in some form, in our lives.
I love the character of Sheila but behind the facade there is real sadness, as Dauphinuk (below) explains. The adoration for Sheila by Terry is so touching- this is top quality writing from Mackenzie Crook and brilliant acting on the part of the cast. Sophie Thompson, you are such an accomplished actress but your insight into the theme of Detectorists- that beneath the surface we all have our troubles, our regrets, our losses- is spot on: thank you, and please keep making the lemonade.
The rapport and interplay between McKenzie and Toby is brilliant. McKenzie Crook is such a beautiful soul and his observational and nuanced writing is a joy to behold. I watched the series first time round and loved it from the beginning.
The gentleness of the comedy and the beautiful surroundings with the various characters, the whole gives the viewer such a feel good mood that it endeared the viewer to the series. A form of love for all is created. So very well done to Mackenzie Crook and all the actors for creating an everlasting series, one we will keep going back to watch, especially when feeling down for a calm pick me up. Thank you all so much.
Every character in the series are so memorable . And as a detectorist myself , when out detecting on footpaths , I obviously meet a lot of walkers etc . Within minutes I'm asked if I've seen ' Detectorists ' on TV ? And then they all go on how brilliant it was ☺️
Sophie is a wonderful actress , Sheila has been our favourite character, the scene of Lance confiding in Sheila outside the pub is the most stand out piece of acting in the whole series, Sophie's moment of reflection in the reply to Lance is so emotionally gripping pure gold. Thankyou Sophie for taking the part.
I've always been a huge fan of Sophie Thompson's brilliant tragi-comic portrayal of Mary Elliot (Anne's snobbish hypochondriac sister) in the 1995 Persuasion movie (what a fabulous movie that is!) I am now keen to see 'The Detectorists' - it sounds terrific. I've been aware of its existence & cult status but until now, I never actually seen it.
I absolutely loved everything about the serie, but I feel really sad for her because she definitely hinted on giving a child up for adoption when she was younger. I wish they tied up that story with a happy end for her

But she has that line which cuts ya guts out. She says, “what you have going for you is she’s met you Lance, and you’re lovely.”
For the nonce?

Sophie’s character is so gentle and she almost floats through the episodes. Perfectly cast and written.
I can’t see there ever being a tv series being made as good as this. Everyone can relate to any of the characters in this series. It makes you laugh and cry. Sheila’s lemonade 😂😂😂😂😂
The only one I would say is Early Doors
A gorgeous piece of work.
She has the softest voice I have ever heard in my life ♥️

Beautiful shot
I also read that a false foreboding of something bad happening to Terry, wasn't there some sort of allusion to that in the script too?

I loved that bit too. It did not need any words. He really adores his wife.

Just don't drink her lemonade. ;)

I don’t remember that. What did she share with him?

Such a lovely gentle person just in the middle of watching detectorists again and Sophie's acting is something really special

Absolute gold! I loved that scene so much. I’ve told my wife that I want to grow old with her like that. #lifegoals
Love her rendition of Miss Bates with her mum playing her mum! Classic double act. Best Mrs Bates ever. Comedy gold

Sheila's character brings the "Magic" and the unpredictable to the Beautiful and Brilliant "Detectorists'.

What a lovely person.
I liked the one when she suggested they do the naked calendar. Brilliant.
Excellent actress 👏
I love how soothing her voice is. I could listen to her talk all day long.

I love in the series that Sheila is clairvoyant. It's often missed, but watch her scenes, she can tell the future.
If only her powers stretched to detecting the Holy Grail...
She was the first to see the cloaked figure 👻
Binged watched episode after epsisode, chilling on the couch with my better half. Perfect tv show
Fishing might have worked but detecting is a beautiful metaphor for yearning, searching, finding, cherishing and all the associated ripple effects.
Sophie's character is all about kindness.
Loved this series, absolutely beautiful.
Good summary from Sophie regarding the series
She has such a soothing voice.
Thank you so much for posting these!!!😊
I love Sophie Thompson and Detectorists.

Conversed briefly with her many years ago, she was incredibly sweet.
lovely lady, lovely character.
All the actors in this show are so nice and professional
Glad I didn’t have the lemon juice 😂
What an extremely lovely interview. Thanks, Sophie!
She seems lovely and a perfect choice to play the role of Sheila.
The tone of her voice is entrancing.
Love her, she's wonderful
Sophie is amazing what an actress.
Lovely voice!
Sheila's lemonade! ha ha!
A very beautiful and softly spoken lady!🩷

glorious Sophie Thompson!
Terry and Sheila pure ❤
I absolutely loved everything about the serie, but I feel really sad for her because she definitely hinted on giving a child up for adoption when she was younger. I wish they tied up that story with a happy end for her
She told her whole life story in a couple of minutes…it was brilliant
Lemon juice anyone 🍋🍋🍋x
I'd love to chat to Sophie over a drink or two, I bet she has some fascinating stories to tell.
How did I not know she was Emma Thompson's sister? (And Phyllida Law's daughter!)
I came here for the lemonade.
I remember her as a teenager in Precious Bane
I believe this is Emma Thompson's sister.
I think Sophie is way better than Emma. Her role as Mary Elliott in Persuasion was just epic.
Sheila...lemonade please...
