Great talk Al, it's my dream to own a Neve in my little studio here in Ireland. Benjy King talked about you all of the time when he was here and loved to tell stories about you guys. We had our moments but he was a really great guy and a very talented engineer/producer. Check out our Resurrection video which we dedicated to him, Benjy mixed and produced the song. He was to come back and produce our album only for his tragic accident. I guess it's a measure of the man when he's missed all the way over here in Ireland. I only worked on the VR. The preamps was amazing. Remember it sounded like a "record" on the way in! I was stunned how the funk band sounded live listening thru the Genelec huge monitors at 301 (SAE). Magic Questions though. The VR needed to be repaired all the time, Ian took out modules every month it seemed. How does the 88R stand in compare to that? How much is the 88R? I use UAD and dream it was the real deal. Someday!
One day I'll have Neve 88RS love Neve boards warmth, dynamic, nuance which is signature sound ! SSL boards are great too but not at same level as Neve.
When I walk in the room young boys look at me strange, as if I was relict from one long forgotten game, that makes my blood boil, turns my eyes to flames, if built an empire, they trie to kick me out in the rain. (LL Cool Jay) Neve Theme Song...
lol plugins, Al is a master of mic proximity-- granted he works in the finest rooms in the world with classic microphones. I suggest reading his book to get more insight.
Watching this in 2019. Man ..hard to believe Al is 88 years old, god bless him ..and what a talent!

He EQs using mic positioning and mic choice, it was the old school way before they had good eq available to them
