What a cozy promo. The Satellaview must have felt like magic back in the 90s.
it was a live service console before live service becomes mainstream
This feels like magic in 2024
It IS magic!
The Sega Channel was the same thing over Cable TV and it came out 1 year before the Satellaview.
But the PlayCable was a cable TV game service that came out in 1980.
It was for the Intellivision.
@@common_c3nts There was also Gameline for the Atari 2600, which used the telephone line for downloading games.
This was streaming before streaming. Way ahead of it's time. Imagine being like no I can't go out tonight, zelda is getting streamed from a satellite to my snes and I don't want to miss it!
Satellaview was such a cool little service. Super before it’s time.
Super before it's time, Super Nintendo! Buy Satellaview today! Only for Super Nintendo!
Yeah, play games for a limited time only. Kind of like Super Mario 3D All Stars 30 years later
omg, y'all are my heroes. As the perfect intersection of Japanese-exclusive Nintendo esoterica and lost media, Satellaview is my jam! 🤩 So, fun fact I learned the other day; The Satellaview was supposed to have an HDD. There's an unused "EXT." bay inside it, and according to the original patent, that was for a 'hard disk drive'.
Was it really going to have a hard drive on it? If so, then I can see why it was never implemented; would have made it a bit too pricey.
@@alexk8792 Well, the patent documents certainly made it sound like an add-on they'd been planning from the beginning. 🤔 A shame they never got the chance... Satellaview HDD add-ons would have no doubt given the modern archivists a lot more to dig through! 😃
4:00 That rendition of the Dark World is fantastic. Without your preservation, I would have never gotten to hear it, even if it's short and talked over. Thanks so much for this!
It's interesting to see what else this promo is advertising. For example, I have never heard of 弟切草 (Otogirisou), basically a visual novel. I'm not quite sure what is being advertised here (the game existed outside of SatellaView so I guess this is just a "downloadable" title here?) but it's interesting to hear about these games too. Incidentally, a fan translation for it has been released just a few months ago! Neat!
I think this is the whole thing:

1:25 Glad to see Nintendo had already been practicing their Presentation *Snap* overseas in the 90s.
0:43 I love how they describe it as “A barrage of games falling from the sky!” (空からどんどんゲームが降ってくれ!)
FYI.. the auto translator for Japanese to English in the subtitle settings actually works pretty well.
Thanks to her speaking kinda slowly and articulately.
This looks so ahead of its time. I remember seeing it briefly in magazines in the 90s but was never going to be in UK.
Crying shame that Nintendo doesn't make use of modern Internet infrastructure to re-broadcast these for Nintendo switch online... Perhaps some of the rights are caught up in the St. Giga side of things (the satellite radio broadcaster who partnered with Nintendo)
Awesome! Can't wait for the Release!
This is so cool!
I had sega channel and had no thoughts about how absolutely magic it was. It wasn't until I was older that I sort of realized that I had a ding dang cable line going into my Genesis, just like how now it goes into my router.. and the Genesis just downloaded roms and loaded them.. in the 90s!
Awesome video! I'm wondering why Nintendo decided to use satellite technology. I mean, a 14.4, 28.8, or 33.6 baud modem from that era would probably also be sufficient for transferring those tiny bits of addons.
Edit to myself: As I was reading Wikipedia about how much a modem cost at that time, it's most certainly the price. Such a modem cost about $250 USD.
BS tuners were already in the home and the modem would take up the home's only phone line.
RUclips does support 4:3 videos, there is no need to add black bars and make it 16:9.
This is worthy of uploading the original capture to the Internet Archive though.
Nintendo invented Steam over 5G before valve and 5G
I miss the 90's so much.
The best era
Me too
Why
@@user-vi4xy1jw7e it was a better time for america. I feel more people were nicer to each other
BS Marvelous Time Athletic? that looks fun and ive never heard of it
Reading up on it, apparently _Marvelous_ was the first game Eiji Aonuma ever directed-before he eventually became synonymous with the Zelda franchise.
just was able to snatch a satellaview unit for $90, I tell you, importing yourself from japanese auction sites instead of Ebay, game changer...
What exactly can you do with one nowadays? Or is it just to display?
@@ZachAttackIsBack Probably just for his collection, but it could also have a rare ROM on it.
@@ZachAttackIsBack so I only got the base unit itself, which by itself, is just for display, does make your super famicom seem more complete, much like the Genesis tower of power, Kudofan did mention that it may have a rare game on it, but those are only on the data cards that would slot into the BS-X cartridge, neither of those I got. The BS-X cart itself is worth maybe $15 average, but the data cards that may have rare downloaded games and data on it are around $30 each. May look into getting some of those in the future, but in the mean time...
Looks pretty good! It looks like there's some minor timing issues on the deinterlace resulting in the flicker, but otherwise it cleaned up nice. I'm happy to share some techniques to help clean it up more if you guys are interested!
As the components at 2:13 indicate, BS refers to Broadcast Satellite, pointing out the BS Antenna (the dish) and the BS Tuner.
Also, it's weird hearing that orchestrated mix of the Dark World theme.
How come we never got all this cool stuff in the US, anyway? It also just blows my mind that Nintendo would go through the effort of releasing something as niche, risky, and ridiculous as the Satellaview, but couldnt even get a CD addon released.
Nintendo of America probably wasn’t allowed to experiment with the tech. NoJ had its foot on NoAs neck when it came to games and content.
Nintendo could get a CD addon, however they didn't had interest on the technology, since they profited with cartridge production.
@@Bruno-gq8uo yeah, but satellite downloadable games was any better? I mean the cost of the hardware to do that would have been much more complex than a simple CD ROM drive.
@@mw9771 That AND Japanese cities are FAR closer together than American cities, which means that getting internet across the country is far easier over there than in the USA where cities are widely separated(which happened in the Cold War era in case the Soviet Union was planning on nuking the USA).
@@Bruno-gq8uo That’s what the PlayStation started out as, Nintendo saw what Sega was doing with Sega CD and decided to work with Sony for their own add-on. Sony and Nintendo didn’t see eye to eye as the project went on and Nintendo tried screwing over Sony, the project fell apart and Sony decided to make it their own console. Nintendo then went to Phillips and together made a terrible deal and the worst Zelda games ever. That served them right, Nintendo in the 90s was downright arrogant.
Nice a new video I love satellaview related stuff good old Japanese tech
Practically was the most innovative way at the time to play online or receive live updates. That broadcasting feature is practically the precursor to how people did it before live streaming. Basically this made online gaming on consoles as a real possible idea all those years ago.
if monopoly is so good, why isnt the- 6:27

The Orb used this sample in “Back Side of the Moon”
When we talk about Nintendo online most people point at the DS and Wii as the consoles to start It
then people are surprised to learn GameCube had online for one game
and before that the SNES had satellaview
but noone ever talks about that famicom online system
I know It had horse betting but that's It
Finally got a Satellaview for my SFC a few weeks back as I have always wanted to collect one. It's pretty awesome to see these promo's.
When Xbox announced XCloud, I remembered this
I wonder if the NES remakes would've gotten renamed in America had this made it over. Since, you know, people would laugh at names like "BS The Legend of Zelda" making bullshit jokes. Lol
2:57 is her mariko mori??
First time i hear the letter L in Japanese. I expected something like Saturraview or Suppa-Saturra-View-San
Still cool as fuck. Wish this had expanded in some form into modern games.
Camel toe in a Nintendo promo? The 90’s were truly blessed!
luckily enough own one. also have a data card with some data on of some Japanese magazine or something no games unfortunately
All worthwhile!
1:02 Holy crap, its the SOL tunnel sound from Mystery Science Theater??
No subs? Wish I could understand what they were saying 😊
Where are the concord keys man its been almost 10 years surely youve found them
Demonetised for reused content in 3... 2... 1....
That actress is subtly not happy to be in this video. :/
First appearance of the protagonist from Another Code?
Pretty insane the the SNES had this service back in the day.
I love this channel and its content but man I hate the name lol
Japanese is like a foreign language.
Well done!
Are the games shown here lost media ?
Woah stereo audio in HD
It is amazing how tech like this was so ahead of its time. We will feature this video in the next edition of our weekly retro gaming roundup, thanks for sharing and preserving this.
I’ve got mine preordered.
That teruki hairstyle
Can I buy “Monopoly 2” in board game form?
Cool
Amazing!
this is great content. thanks for preserving a cool piece of gaming history that was thought to be lost to time. so cool.
now translate
Reminds me off sega tv. I had that for a bit in '95
we got robbed
Thanks!

This is incredible to see!
I like 80s styled and charming that was. 🙂❤️
90's*
@@Aldair98 That commerical was 80s styled even though it was shown in the 90s.

7sec ago wow, i be the first seeing this!
Anyone here know which of the first party sound link games were only playable *during* their broadcast?
I know the Zelda’s were, but I can’t find any information on if the others were downloadable and playable after the broadcast or not.
I’d really like to know about these 6 specifically, if anyone knows:
Konae-Chan’s Heartbreaking Penguin Family
BS Marvelous: Time Athletics
BS Marvelous: Camp Arnold
BS Tantei Club: Memories Lost to the Snow
Excitebike: Bun Bun Mario Battle Stadium
BS Fire Emblem: Akaneia Senki
Edit: and to be clear, I’m not talking about emulation, I mean I want to know if any of these are still playable on official, un-modded BS-X cartridges that received the broadcasts in the 90s. Unsurprisingly, my search for this oddly specific information has yielded no results.
Awesome!
Ok, sprite artists and rom-hackers, you have your assignments. :)
When you realize this is the most voice acting a (real) Zelda game has ever had.
I find it absolutely hilarious that they were really trying to convince Japanese children that this thing was actually the receiver end of an honest-to-god space satellite that they constructed and launched into reaches of space up in earth's very orbit beaming video games into Super Famicoms, and that there were actual people up there manning these probes dressed like aliens from campy Godzilla films along with it.
Well, the first part is true 😅. There was a geocentric satellite broadcasting and the Super Famicom Satellaview units were the receivers.
Lets hope we get a translation
I don't know how accurate they are, and sometimes they can take a while before appearing, but there are English subtitles.
