    How did it work?

Lovelock published a paper in 1969 describing his "Palladium Transmodulator". In short, hydrogen gas (and only hydrogen gas) can diffuse through solid metal walls of heated palladium-silver alloy, which provides an easy way to remove hydrogen gas from gas mixtures.
More details: hydrogen gas was added as a carrier to gas samples taken on Mars by the Viking probe's gas chromatograph. None of the gases of interest in the sample could diffuse through the walls of the palladium alloy tubing, so passing the sample gas through the tube was a very simple and effective way to remove the hydrogen gas from the sample. This increases the accuracy of the concentration measurement of the other gases of the sample, since you don't need to worry about how the ratio of carrier gas (hydrogen) to sample gas is changing. So you can now achieve a higher accuracy of gas concentration measurement without precisely controlling the gas flow rates (with heavy and complicated valves) or precisely measuring and adjusting for variable gas flow rates (with heavy and complicated instruments).
