Although, honestly, one of the things that most adaptations leave out, is just how funny A Christmas Carol actually is. Like, even from the very first few paragraphs, the narrator actually gets sidetracked, wondering what about doornails makes them particularly dead! What brings the story to life for me, is the narration, and having Gonzo as Charles Dickens is one of my favorite bits about this movie.
I agree! People forget that Charles Dickens was very funny. My writing partner and I were so inspired by this version while we wrote our take on A Christmas Carol because we also wanted to put comedy back into it and no one does it like the Muppets.
He often wrote tangents like that and went into in depth details about describing people, places and things because he was literally paid a penny for every word he wrote in his books
Still can't believe they cut out When Love is Gone. The moment when Scrooge joins in, remembering the lyrics after all those years, it's so tragic. Scrooge may have been a douchebag, but deep down, he's just sad and regretful.
lol this was such a legendary Christmas Carol retelling! I love your jacket- the off-shoulder look and the Hallmark movie businesswoman look are both so iconic
I think it’s implied that Scrooge had figured it out, but was still desperately trying to deny it. Seeing it just removed any possibility of denying it further.
This has been my number 1 favourite Christmas film for years. Back when I was 9, I got cast as Scrooge in our school's Christmas play, and I would watch the VHS to learn about the story. When I was really young, like under 6 years old, I would see the trailer on other Disney VHSs we had, and it showed Scrooge shouting 'UNEMPLOYED!!!!', that clip always scared me until I started watching the film regularly. There's another Muppet Christmas Special (A Muppet Family Christmas) we had where all the Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock characters came to stay with the Muppets at Fozzie's mum's house. Have you ever seen that one? It was the actually first Muppet Special I ever watched when I was 4. Before then I only saw ads and a clip from The Muppet Show that was at the end of my Jungle Book VHS. I know I'm rambling but this clip made me scared of Miss Piggy up until I saw this special, cause it ended with her whacking Kermit across the stage. It didn't help that the trailer for Muppets from Space also showed her beating up the news reporter.
It's such a great movie! I haven't seen that other special but hopefully I'll be able to get to it come next holiday season. 😊 I really appreciate your comment. Thanks for watching!
I don't think Scrooge was surprised to find that he was the dead man that everyone hated, I think he just had thee feeling reinforced now that it was confirmed.
Merry Christmas, Avery! At first, I thought you had taken one of my suggestions when you decided to review this. Then I realized I was suggesting this one to everyone but you! WAAAVE-LEEENGHT!
It kinda sucks that Disney couldn't make up their minds on wither or not to include the "When Love Is Gone" song between Scrooge and his girlfriend. It was cut from the theatrical release due to test audiences finding it boring, brought back for the VHS/Laserdisc release, taken back out for the 2002 DVD release, brought back again for the 2005 DVD release but only in the Fullscreen version and not the Widescreen version, and then taken back out again for the Blu Ray and Disney Plus release.
I know, they did a similar thing with Beauty and the Beast on Disney+ where they left our Human Again due to it being not in the original release but it was included on the DVD that I grew up with and is one of my favorite songs in the movie.
I saw this for the first time tonight and the ghost of Christmas past made me sooo uncomfortable I couldn't even look at it lol. This movie is definitely something I want to make a tradition out of moving forward 🙏🏾
It's super strange looking. It really does remind me of the puppets from Dark Crystal which were horrifying. I always forget this one exists but I need to watch it every year because it's adorable. 💛 Happy Holidays!
I think Caddicarus said it best. "My name is Michael Caine, and I'm in a kids film with a screaming door, a dying baby frog, and Death himself taking me into Hell. What have I done."
The "twice as big as me" turkey loses some of its grandour when its a little kid bunny saying the line over a human child..like..yeah..its still quite a feast butIi honestly want to see these dinosaur ass turkeys that apparently roamed England at this time! Like, either the kid from the origional story really was a little bunny rabbit or farms were Jurrasic Park back then! "BASTE HER!!! BASTE HERRRRR!!!' *screams and frantic gobbling*
First I apologize for not commenting before since I've seen this video a bunch (it's one of my favorite videos of yours). Don't know if you do but it took like 10 puppeteers to have Kermit walk in that Tis the Season scene, and creating the Ghost of Christmas past involved water and oil. Most people think Tiny Tim suffered from rickets, tuberculosis, and or polio. We were also robbed of getting a Bunsen and Beaker song :/ this is definitely the best version of A Christmas Carol
Truthfully what Tiny Tim had was likely not one thing, but multiple things. However, the two most likely culprits are renal tubular acidosis (a kidney disease) or rickets (a softening of the bones caused by a lack of vitamin D). On top of that some have speculated that he might have had pneumonia or whooping cough as well. All of which were survivable if treated. However treatments were expensive and, well you can probably see where I’m going with this.
I never noticed the muppets are mainly a lefty like me. :o It really does add an extra layer to the realism that they are writing since we tend to have to keep our hands off the paper or ink will smudge lol.
Yes! As a lefty I agree and I'm sure it's probably because typically use their right hand to control the puppet's face and their left hand for mannerisms but I love it regardless of the reason. 🙂
Girl, why do you upload these so close to midnight? lol Anyway, it never feels like Christmas until I watch some version of a Christmas Carol! Merry Christmas, Avery 🎄
When I was in college, our theatre department wrote and put in their own version of A Christmas Carol. In our version, Scrooge and Marley were big business women in the modern age and the ghost of Past, Present, and Future were like important figures in Scrooge's life. Past was her sister, Present was the kind Fezziwig, and Future was Tiny Tim. It was very strange not gonna lie
I’m always so impressed by your ability to find these things I’ve never heard of, I’m a bit late but Merry Christmas! Always excited to watch your videos :D
Thank you! Most of my video ideas come from something I watched as a kid or are suggestions from the community. Old and strange movies tend to find me 😂 and lol bless kermit and his tiny legs...and Seth for bringing it up.
Merry Christmas! Loved the video. Every performer in this film did a great job but do think we should give prompts to Meredith Braun who played Belle, especially when consider her deleted song "When Love is Gone". She was actually cast as Christine in the West End production The Phantom Of the Opera a year after this film. Did I mention she was in her late teens when she did this.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I think the reason why people like you who are usually don't like puppets love the Muppets or Muppet like character is because the emote, they have there own personalities, and they are treated as if we coexist with them even outside the movies and shows. Its why shows like Sesame Street, The Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock still stand the test of time.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Fun Fact: Before Disney came along this was supposed to made-for-tv special and would had the core Muppet cast as the three main ghost. This film was also dedicated to Jim Henson and Richard Hunt. Look the later up he did a lot classic characters.
I can’t believe I hadn’t seen this yet. Fun fact about the real Charles Dickens. He visited in 1842 and said “I would never live here.” In 1867, he returned to America for public reading tours of A Christmas Carol and some American fans pirates his work and he successfully sued them for plagiarism.
Also, I’m pretty sure that muppets are usually left handed, because the performers are mostly right handed, and use the less dominant hand to move the arms.
yeah I went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out what would cause his symptoms but would also be curable in the 1800s and my best conclusion is scurvy and possibly tuberculosis
Yeah it's fascinating because in researching it I've found that historians are actually not totally in agreement but know it's something to do with malnutrition and have written multiple papers on it and it's just super interesting that Charles Dickens is still generating so much discussion to this day. 😂 He'd probably be proud of that.

That's a myth I think. It's more just a feature of Victorian literature in general
Michael Caine is one of best Scrooges out there if not the best as he's acting against Muppets and plays the role completely straight.
Yes, he takes this role as seriously as any other prestige film he's done and it gives the whole movie a great balance.
The muppet one is definitely my favorite version !!

Tiny Tim’s passing is a lot sadder when you realize this was the first production following Jim’s passing.
Noooo 😭 I went to the centre for puppetry arts and saw the Henson exhibit and got choked up seeing old videos of Jim.
this is the best christmas carol adaptation
