At 3:00 EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THIS, PLEASE PIN THIS. I got 2 of them in my package, 1 is for the UK market because their wheel is on the other side and the other one is for left hand drive, I STRUGGLED 1 HOUR BEFORE I FIGURED THIS OUT AND KEPT USING THE UK ONE!!!
Glad you solved it!
@@robdude1969 Yeah it was inverted and couldnt figure why it doesnt fit 🤣🤣 apparently UK models spin the other way around
Thanks for this video!! I’m a 30 year old girl that knows nothing about cars!!! This was a perfect step by step for me! Thanks again!!! I feel like a mechanic lol! :D
Thank you so much for your comment! I make these videos for you all! I am so glad that you were empowered enough to do it yourself!!! Honestly, I know we are all capable of so much more and all it takes is a little seeking of knowledge to build that confidence. I hope you are able to keep up with the other hiccups your car gives you along the way. There are so many people sharing fix it videos that it's worth giving it a shot!
If you're doing work on your car, you're not only a mechanic, you're a BMW owner.. lol
I love you
You are at this point lol.
This is a pretty hard job
Thanks a Lot for this amazing video. My 2002 320i had the same problem and when i visited to a local mechanic he said that all the locks in the car should be replaced. luckily I came across this video and fixed the issue. Thanks again !!!
RUclips university for the win! Education should be free.
Dude Damnnnn! lol but kinda same thing wit me, the bmw dealership said it would probably cost upwards of a $1000 or so to fix .. so I’m hoping this fixes it
Lol.. I was about to tear my door apart to replace the door lock and mechanism.. I'm so glad I watched this, because you reminded me of this failure on these cars.
I’m one of the least handy people ever. I ordered a repair kit from Amazon and sat down with this video to do the repair. The exact same part was broken. I replaced everything. However when it came to the spring, that was hard because I don’t have a vise. I used a pen and sort of muscles my way through it. This video helped me SO much. Thank you for the time you spent and for the excellent explanations! Well done! Oh and I did the repair to a 2003 E46 M3.
awesome -glad you were able to do the repair. I knew when mine broke others did too!
Thats how you do a video about changing parts! Keep doing it man, voice sounds clear and good, you give all details, impossible to mess it up with such explanation. Keep doing it!
Thanks! I'll do what I can.
Super helpful I found myself this early morning with the key stuck 5 am to be exact & im fortunate that you made this video now I’m just waiting for the pieces to arrive tomorrow so I can install & put it back together
I did this in 10 mins with the use of this video. Even linked the kit in the description. Thank you very much, now I can lock and unlock my doors again!!
So glad it helped!!! It seems all the problems I am having with this car, others will too! Pass it forward.
Great video thanks, helped me getting mine apart and back together, for some reason on mine the pin was missing and the horseshoe clip was broken in two, not only that but judging by the colours it looks like my rotatey doo-dad was broken a long time ago, a mystery for sure.
EDIT: and for anybody else watching, as has already been pointed out, the rotating part should be put back 180 degrees to what was shown in the video, makes putting the spring back a little easier.
it was amazing - I never knew mine was broken until my battery died and the key fob didn't work! Glad you got it fixed!
Pretty easy to follow the only step I would add is the 2nd collar piece that you put in (the one the spring has to work around) if you look at the bottom of the lock you can see 2 pieces sticking up that are oriented specifically for your lock. This will help anyone who mightve been in my situation where the piece that broke (same one in the video) was obliterated beyond all recognition.
Wtf this video is so simple and precise. By far the best tutorial. Good shit man
Thanks for the comment! I hope it helps.
4 Years later just want to say you saved me man, and you linked everything so easy I appriecate you grately!!
Good luck!!! I’m on my third e46 now!
First E46 one year in officially loved every mile
Notice the piece at 3:04, there's a side that is higher than the other. The way you put it in makes it very hard to put the spring in there, since it rests higher on that ridge and needs more force to compress it. I put that piece flipped 180 degrees, so that the spring rests flat with the bottom of the piece. That makes installing the spring much easier and I suspect that's why you had so much trouble.
I don't know if it's supposed to be that way, but it works fine and makes more sense to me. Anyway hope it helps other people. Great tutorial btw.
Thank you for the great tip
Thank you, explained every detail without taking to much time
I just bought the kit! I have a 330i 2003 and this happened to me at Fred Meyers at 10:40 pm after I just bought a whole shopping cart of groceries lol 😂
Thank you so much!
This video saved me money and a headache. One tip for others from my own experience. Take the entire lock apart, clean it and grease it. 1. you might as well since you already replacing the hardware. 2. it was fun and I got to learn how the lock functions completely. 3. it was easier to put in the replacement parts (for some reason they were hard to fit and I realized it was because there was just so much gunk and grime there)
Thanks for sharing. I made the video for you. Do what you can to “pass it forward.”
Thanks mate - really helped. The spring bit was such a pain! Did it in my vice but the bloody thing still hit the ceiling 3 times! Great video
Daveyboy 20 they are feisty aren’t they?!? Mine launched a couple times too. Don’t do this job in a cluttered space!
Good advice@@robdude1969
Thank you for the help! I appreciate the clear info and patience! You helped my e46!
awesome!
This is a perfect tutorial, couldnt be better! great job! But be tastk itself is truly annoying. Took me nearly an hour with the help of a friend.
that freaking SPRING!!! right?
Excellent video! Great pace and easy to follow. Thank you!
Glad it helped you out!
Thanks man for this video! You really helped me a lot by saving a lot of time taking the door panels of 😂. I wanted to start with that.... great video! Clear and simpel 👍🏻
Cor Kappert - I hope your repair goes well.
If you're able to, do this project with all doors unlocked, and/or all windows open.
If the fob in your key is working, hold the front button down for a few seconds, and it should automatically open all the windows.
Equally, when windows are open, hold the front button for a few seconds, and it should automatically close all the windows
Thank you from Germany. Great repair video. Especially the detailed view is outstanding in comparison to other videos. Saved a lot of money.
great news! Glad it helped!
Thanks mate, didn't know it was this easy. Now I can finally fix it and throw away any worries about flat battery or dead fob locking me out.
You can always clime through the boot like I did lol
@@JohnSmith-hf8zn If I can get into the boot of a standard four-door US sedan UK saloon 318 E46, what should I then do?
Are there release clips on the backs of the seats to fold them down?
Do I have to remove the carpet from the backs of the seats?
RSVP ASAP.
Thanks!
THANKS FOR THIS! HERO!
My keyless entry stopped working at first. Then the door tumbler was failing. I repaired it before it completly broke. After reassembly, I installed it and hoping the keyless worked again. Tried reprogramming the key again but still didnt work.
This is the 4th or 5th time Ive done this repair on 2 different E46's. Took about 30 mins total.
All for under $30.
So, you got them working again?
Big thank you to you for this video as I was just about to also take off the hole door panel lol which Now by watching your video!
I have discovered
you don't have to do this!
😉👌🏻👍🏻
glad it worked out!
Wow! Excellent video. Gotta to do my new 1999 328i with same problem. Fortunately FOBS work, but I need key access to feel safe. Thank you. Will be ordering part and watching this 10 more times.
You can do it!
Ok so I did it and my spring decided to leave and get stuck behind the mechanism. Now I might need to break the spare parts to fix it. You don't have to tension the spring as in the video, it works fine without tensioning.
THIS WORKED! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!
You are the best!!!
@@kimba9100 so, this helped?
Thanks so much for sharing, this video. BMW got to much plastic involved in the production or bad quality materials.
Very true! That stuff breaks down over time... injection molding is so much cheaper than machining.
Great video, but as a locksmith I recommend using powdered graphite as a lubricant. Grease attracts dust and can "gum " up your lock.
Thanks for your helpful comment!!
Hi Mike, I'm trying to get "rekeying" information for a 1998 540i trunk lock. My key will not move in my original cylinder (corrosion?), and the slot is stuck at 90 degrees in a clockwise direction (horizontal). The cylinder allows very slight movement in a counter-clockwise direction, but that's it, and it has no effect on the open/close function. I have secured a replacement lock (from the junkyard) that needs to be rekeyed to the ignition key profile. Most locksmiths seem clueless, as "it's a BMW." The local BMW dealership has quoted $315 for a new barrel, which for me seems excessive. How difficult is it to rekey the cylinder?
Graphite? I prefer Houdini or tri-flow - most people use waaaay to much graphite anyways. But that’s just my 2 cents.
This is actually such a useful video
Just happened to me. Thanks for video
let us know how it goes!
Amazing! Thank you so much!
Who just cut the shiz out of his fingers but now has working central locking ? THIS GUY. Thanks bud
Yikes! Cool you fixed it though!
@@robdude1969 been worrying me for a few days not having my car locked. But for only £8 and some patience it’s sorted. Honestly thank you so much dude. You’ve earned a sub
@@HarltonBanks it’s amazing to me how many of these are busted!!!
*****AT **2:23**, DO NOT LET THE LOCK CORE FALL OUT*****
A great video. However, at 2:23, Rob mentions in passing that "the lock core could fall out."
Trust me, you do not want the lock core to fall out, or you will discover a whole new level of hell.
Use sellotape or similar to keep the lock core inside the mechanism.
*****I REPEAT: DO NOT LET THE LOCK CORE FALL OUT*****
Uh oh. How bad was it?
Best tutorial! Thank You!
Thank you for the help 🤘🤘
Thanks a lot for your time to show us how to do it
Thanks for the thanks!! I hope you fixed your lock!
thanks bro,it helped me a lot
Very helpful ! Thanks for taking the time.
thank you, just ordered my repair kit
keep us posted on your repair!
Wow! You made it look so easy. What I am wondering is this basically the process for all makes of vehicles??
Similar for many I would assume.
Thank you!
thanks
You're welcome!
Good job !
Yes, very good but how do I unlock my door if I can't open the door?
having same problem
Fob
Open the US trunk = UK boot at the back of the car, pop the clips on the back of the seats to fold them forwards, and if necessary, get a child to climb through the small gap with the key in their pocket
Thank you xx Will give this a go myself xxxx
Thank you! Really needed this!
Thanks buddy that was super helpful 👍
This video has one incorrect bit: Shows spring being pulled over a post with shoulders. NO! the post with shoulders goes on 180o on the opposite side. The spring is pulled over the plain post on the other side of the ring.
at what time? My lock hasn't given any problems since this fix. I'm curious what is different?
@@robdude1969 The part you replaced, the one that was broken, was flipped. I guess it could still rotate flipped, but it's supposed to go the other way, as it has a crevice made especially for the part underneath.
@@HooperCross Thank you
The lock core won't come off even though the screw is loose. Maybe wd-40?
Thank you Bro! Very good video.
Tanks nice video
Great Video. 10/10!
Graeme Heinrich thanks! Hope it helped.
Very nice work thank you!
Great video!
It is hard to pull off even tho screw is loose
Managed to reassemble and fit into the door. Only problem is that the key is locking the door, not unlocking it! Help!!!
Take it apart completely, start again
Thx
Thank you
Same as everybody thx ✌️😎
Hi. My key is stuck in the driver's side door lock. Would removing the cylinder allow me to release the key? Is there a key release mechanism on the cylinder? Thank you!
@Tanya Wadhwani hey my key is stuck in my driver door as well did u ever get it out? I need assistance bad it’s been in there for the last 48 hrs plz lmk if u had any luck and can help me out
@@NaJohnsonWPhilly Hi. No - mine is still in the lock. It's been a few months 😬... I use the spare. If you find a solution, will you let me know? I will do the same.
@@NaJohnsonWPhilly Did you ever get your key out? Mine is still in the door. No luck. BMW dealership mechanic suggested taking the interior door panel off and releasing the key from the cylinder. Letting my son try it as soon as a few needed tools arrive.
@@tanyawadhwani6789 well to b honest I jus took a pair of vics grips and locked it on the key and pulled it out
@@NaJohnsonWPhilly With success? Key still work?? Any damage?
Great man but help with this one...I cannot get the door unlocked at all bro so cannot open the doors at all is there a way to get in with door locked...tricky one this
I’m guessing your fob is not working too huh? Oh man. Good luck. Send a tiny person in from the trunk?
Thank you for the video done it. ❤❤ Lots
Amazing video!!! Thanks mate

Hi how if the key is not turning to unlock but can turn to lock like anti clockwise to lock and clockwise to unlock it.. is it stuck or something?
Can anyone tell me what s the name of the replacement so i can order it?
There are links in the description.
Hi need it how do I order it?

Worked one time, and now my key is stuck inside the lock cylinder. What should I do? Horse shoe is turned so it wont come out.
oh man, good luck!
Ouch!
How did you solve the problem?
Hey i wanted to do this but i cant get the Key assembely out of the door i did everything you did
bigger hammer? Good luck!
What if the car is locked and this happens?
Open the US trunk = UK boot at the back of the car, pop the clips on the back of the seats to fold them forwards, and if necessary, get a child to climb through the small gap with the key in their pocket.
There's a child safety lock button between the two front seats. Tell the child to press that, and all four doors should lock and unlock
thanks for the video
Hey. I also changed the broke part but it also don't lock the car after fixing that. What could be the problem ?
Take it apart completely, start again
Will this solve my issue of my keyfob not being able to unlock the door? I can unlock manually but that's it.

Thanks Mate
Thanks
Good luck!
I can't seem to get the lock out! I unscrewed it beyond its limit, but the lock won't release. Should the door be locked, pull and hold the handle while trying to remove?
If you got all the hardware off it, perhaps it needs a love tap. Cover with folded towel and whack it gently to suggest it release from the grime and possible corrosion. Monkey taps. Not gorilla taps. From the door? Or the mechanism?!
Will it work on a 99 323i?
should be similar.
Hi how you open the car
My lock core slipped out and some of the brass guides came out... I imagine there's a specific order to this. Any ideas or help as to how I can fix this new issue?
did everything correctly but key is stuck and wont spin any help?
Mine is like stuck and i cant even move the horshoe retainer
clean and lube... good luck!
Mine won't lock or turn since I readjusted the door
Take it apart completely, start again
mine isnt turning after the repair what am i doing wrong
take it apart and try again... clean well and lube. be sure the lock core turns with your key before you install in car.
I have e the same problem but me key battery gone how to open the car I have bmw e46 cabrio
Open the US trunk = UK boot at the back of the car, pop the clips on the back of the seats to fold them forwards, and if necessary, get a child to climb through the small gap with the key in their pocket
Great video but what if the locking barrel comes out of the car door when you lock the car. .
Same question🤷🏽♂️
Very good video. This is very helpful. When you were removing the key tumble, how did you know when to stop unscrewing the allen head screw?
Till it comes out haha
lol
you have BMW and Mini keys on one as me 😂
Such silly boys we are. 🥳😊😆🤦♂️
i just did this but when i tested it the key got stuck and barely turns now what do i do
Try again. Clean and lube all parts. Try turning key while you have it apart. Good luck!
@@robdude1969 hey man, thanks for the tip, however i just took apart the lock cylinder and re did everything and it works now, thanks again.
I have the same broken piece as the one in your video, but the part I got is too small and will not fit over the post. Do you think it was just defective and I should order another one? It’s from the link in the bio
They are such low grade metal parts. I wouldn’t be surprised if you got a bad one. There are also extra parts in the kit I got - maybe wrong part? If it’s close, and you are sure it’s correct, maybe some little files could open it a bit.
Thank you for the video. I have a 2006 bmw 525i. I can't find these parts for it. is it possible to use a spare part for the 3 series bmw or they will not fit
Super
i have the coupe 46 and i dont have that first clip you took off. Any tips?
Merci a toi 💪
I was too focused on that GMT to take in what you were saying
lol. it's in most of my videos. Cheers.
Je ne comprends pas lorsque j’ai remis le morceau, j’ai fermé à clé mais la clé est resté coincée, savez vous pourquoi ?
So I can stick my key in and it feels normal but when I turned the key to lock/unlock it nothing happens, thankfully the car is unlocked. I can even use the same key to start the car no problem but I’m just worried I won’t ever be able to lock my car or unlock it if it some how locks.
QuantumKarma valid concerns, if you take that lock cylinder out, I bet it’s broken!
if your lock incompletely broken, can you have unmade by bmw to work with your key
St. Da Vinci I’m sure the dealer can do this repair for you. I’m not a fan of their pricing.
