- I was able to make the cutting time on this used mora ice auger go from 10 minutes to 18 seconds! Don't let people tell you that you can't sharpen your own ice auger blades, anyone can do this. It's very easy and will save you money. Hope this helps someone.

Thank-you…Thank-you….Thank-you.
Been Ice Fishing since the 1970’s.
Solved the problem of dull blades via purchasing new. Used to pay as little as $8 for a set.
Never recognized the Two Angle edge configuration. Very helpful.
Glad it helped you out!
Great advice. Always wanted to sharpen my own blades. Now I can do it properly. Thanks.
Thanks for the video, mine also took 10 minutes to go to 10 in, but after watching your video and sharpening I got through 10 inches in 1 minute. I just used water for the whetstone though.
@@time4nature Nice!
Awesome video. The only thing I would recommend is mineral oil instead of canola as it can't go rancid. Tight lines brother
Whole bunch of other videos on this. Just watched yours first. Good enough! Seems like you know what your doing. Thanks. Going to try it now. 👍
Thanks! Hope it works for you
@@EngineeringHooksets , thing I noticed is that you said put the shim at the back of the blade, which would force the cutting edge inwards, the wrong way. Checked another video and it says put it at the front. FYI.
@70Marc shim placement depends on how you want your blade to cut. More aggressive angle = harder to turn but more ice per turn. Less aggressive angle = easier to turn but less ice per turn.
I immediately thought of that too@@70Marc
Nice job The directions were easy to follow
YOUR PARENTS SHOULD BE VERY PROUD THEY DID GOOD.....I THOUGHT RESPECTFUL YOUNG MEN WERE A THING OF THE PAST.....KEEP IT UP!!!!!ITLL TAKE YOU PLACES ONLY FEW HAVE BEEN
Good tutorial video. It is better to sharpen your own but I get just buying new ones. Some people don't have time. But you can just sharpen stuff while you're watching TV. 👍
Yeah everyone has their own preferences
By the time you'd go to the store, find the blades, and then install them, you would have already sharpened the ones you have. Save on wear and tear on the car. Save on gas. Save on the price of the new blades.
I will be sharpening mine the next time I'm at the mountain house
Thanks for sharing. Good Stuff.
very helpful video young nab did good job.
Useful! Well done!
Thanks!
Blacken the cutting edge with a sharpie marker to see that you are at the correct angle with your stone!
Good tip!
Great practical and helpful video dude!
Thanks!
Great vid. I did buy new blades but I will sharpen the old set and have a spare. Seen Dpuck mention you in his shoutout vid, so +1 sub!
Sharpening shops never seem to do well for me. I've sharpened them fairly well myself but nothing beats new and they last a long time if you don't abuse them. Cutting bottom or slamming blades on the ice are what I see too many people do.
Its all what works for the individual
I'm 62 and bought mine when i was a teenager. Now, I haven't ice fished in 18 years. But my blades were still sharp the last time I used it. I plan on going this winter now that cold weather has arrived and I'm close to retirement. I still use the cover to protect the blades. As soon as I would be done drilling the holes I would put the cover back on. I always protected the blades and protected myself so I wouldn't get cut. I still have my ice fishing boots that I bought in high school. Waste not
You can also touch them up with a piece of emery cloth on a flat surface (glass or steel)
Good tip!
Nice job I seen you trying to use it in the first video it looked like it was not cutting to good. who say's you cant sharpen those that's crazy!! if it has a edge you can sharpen it just like a knife.
Yeah Im not sure why so many people have that opinion. Maybe its a conspiracy by the blade companies 😂
looks like a waterstone, should try soaking it in water.
Excellent tutorial, thank you. Question for you though… my 8” Mora blades are somewhat concave (moreso than yours appear to be?). What would you recommend in that case? I’m just not sure if I can get the right angle on the whetstone - Thanks again
Thank you! I would say just try to rotate the blade while you bring it across the stone as best you can to match the curve. It doesn't need to be 100% perfect, just do your best. Good luck!
@@EngineeringHooksetsI came here with the exact same question. It’s honestly better to just buy new ones
Put a sharpie mark on the bevel. Then you will know you are at the correct angle.
( 2nd generation professional sharpener)
Good tip!
Vegetable oil gets really sticky because it dries out. I would wash your stone and use a light machine oil. Water works too but not as well as oil. Just a tip
Thanks for the tip!
I have the 8' mora, but I don't have that small anodized metal spacer...can you tell me how thick that small piece is for me to try to duplicate one please?
I don't have the auger with me atm but I googled it and people are saying to either use 1) aluminum foil tape, or 2) a piece of aluminum from a soda/beer can
Nice cabinets mat
Nice backsplash myat
@@matthewmartin926 thanks mat
I use 3 in 1 oil
Mineral oil is cheap by the grocery pharmacy. It won’t go rancid.
Good tip! Thank you
👍
Thank you for the view, Dan!
Skip to 5 minutes if you want to learn how he sharpens his blades😴
I use motor oil cuz if I use cooking oil I get hungry.
I'm pretty sure that is the way everyone is trying to sharpen their blades and failing, study about how to use your stone too.
Found blades for 19.99
Nice!
No one ever makes a sharpening vid then uses said blade 😂😂😂
