  • X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a tool for characterizing arrangement of atoms in crystals and distances between crystal faces. This can be used to identify atoms and the crystalline form.

    Excellent presentation. Now, it is crystal clear.

    I am no teacher but have done a little with XRD. If you have the XRD data you have to figure out what the crystal structure of the material is. FCC, BCC etc. Next you use Bragg's law knowing the hkl values for each peak and you can calculate the lattice parameter (d=a/(Sqrt(h^2+k^2+l^2))

    There are some minor mistakes in this video, but she does a great job to introduce the subject. Thank you.

    Just stumbled upon this when searching for "x-ray" and was surprised to see a Bruker D8. I use one myself for my bachelors project.
    This was fun to see, cheers from Uppsala.

    Great detail, I have a 3 hour demonstration this week, not sure if the same machine but hopefully this gives a good enough overview to know what questions to ask, thanks!

    It is easy to build your own x ray machine. Take a dental x ray tube. Hook up a 30,000 tesla coil (build one from a kit) to the tube's cathode. That is it. Very simple. Buy sheet photography paper and, under a red photo lamp, hold a chicken leg between the film and the anode of the tube. Develop the film. You will see the bones but not the flesh.

    Anybody has knowledge about the price of this machine? or an estimate of the price? I'll appreciate your help cause I'm working on a project and I need that information,

    • @newfieldcharlotte324
      @newfieldcharlotte324 5 лет назад

      Don't know if it is still relevant but just the tube itself is about 9000 USD on average. Not speaking of the generator, goniometer etc. so the sum of the machine could be about 13-15000 USD.

      Good lab practice is to always wear protection.

    • @newfieldcharlotte324
      @newfieldcharlotte324 5 лет назад

      What for? The material obviously isn't hazardous and the lead glass provides protection from x-rays. Neither gloves nor goggles help with that. Unless she uses materials that require it it's absolutely needless to use so much protection. On a personal note using them is also extremely uncomfortable in most cases.
