''Gege is something a child would call their older brother or a close male friend who is older. It sounds a bit childish or flirtatious to keep doing so when you’re no longer a child. Then you switch to the singular Ge. Similar to how ‘Mama’ and ‘Baba’ are Mommy and Daddy, and when you’re older you swap to ‘Ma’ as Mom and ‘Ba’ as Dad.
Someone might call their boyfriend Gege. Its a way of acting cute. It’s serviceable in both ancient and modern times.
People are usually more familiar with Korean norms bc kdramas, so Gege is the equivalent of Oppa. It can be used flirtatiously or platonically. Just depends on context, who’s saying it and to whom.''

In Polish similiar we say "bracie" and "braciszku" more affectionately. Not used in a romantic sense, but "bracie" (nominative: Brat) can be used in the same context as the English "bro", but if a beautiful girl I didn't know came up to me on the street and said "braciszku", my heart would probably instantly melt from the overabundance of sweetness

If a woman called a random guy brother in Australia it wouldn’t be a compliment they’d just think they were being friendzoned.

    • @AndorranStairway
      @AndorranStairway Год назад +436

Yup, because “brother” in English doesn’t carry the same connotation. The word she’s using is the term for “older brother/male”. Another example would be “Oppa” in S.Korea which females use to refer to older males, but it can also be used in “cutesy/flirtatious” fashion.

Now I understand why in the Chinese novels I read in my country's language, the male lead always wants to be called "brother" by the female lead. However, in my own country, this is a very common call for a younger brother to behead his older brother or a man who is older, a call for seniors at school too.

It's funny how different cultures attach certain meanings to words. I've never had an unrelated girl call me "brother" and I'd probably think it was slightly odd if she did, though I would think of it after as a gesture of respect. But if a random girl called me "daddy," I'd probably react just like these guys, even though I think girls calling their guys "daddy" is kind of a strange feature of my culture. It's a funny world.

In Indonesia, it was normal. we called "brother" to the stranger because to honor and respect that person.
"Mas or Abang" for man and "mba" for women.
"Bapak or paman or kakek" for old man
"Ibu or tante or nenek" for old women.
We can't directly call by name or without name. Concidered impolite.

Here in Russia, if an unfamiliar woman said this to a man - “Thank you, brother,” it would cause some bewilderment, but on the whole it would be perceived positively.
But if in our country a man says this to another unknown man, then it will be perceived as normal and natural, and will be considered an expression of great respect for the person who helped!

  • @thomasheng86

The Chinese "GeGe" in this video, not simply "brother" in translation. It only from a girl (not relative) that same generation with the men, calling the men that she love/like. That's why the gentlemen so excited being called GeGe from pretty girl haha.

Gege is the equivalent of Oppa. Most Westerners can't understand how cute this is.

@@goldenhourss Really? I used to work in Shenzhen for 2 years. My male coworkers sometimes called me jie jie when they needed help. They didn't look like they were flirting with me, and I found it kinda cute. I think it's similar to how girls call Gege.

It's the same here in Java. In daily we just say "mas" mean brother in javanese. But if you say "kak" (same meaning brother, but in Indonesian). I think they will be Embarrassed a little. because we don't really use "kak", so sometimes it's a little bit akward

Its really different in India here we commonly refer people as "bhaiya" (brother) no matter what the situation is 😂 if you are asking a stranger for help or even talking with a vendor the term remains "bhaiya" unless if it is someone really old

Yeah it’s normal in China too. The reason they’re surprised is because in China, “Gege,” with the double “ge” sounds flirtatious and cutesy if you’re an adult doing it (as mostly children use it). Most actual adults would just use “Ge.”
It’s like the difference between the Japanese “Onii-chan” (more cutesy) versus “Onii-san” (more polite).
