It's shocking, really. I've never heard a song more accurate and relatable to someone in depression or going through overwhelmingly dark times.
The lack of breaks in lyrics combined with the only 2 breaths taken in symmetry that makes me feel a sense of urgency and an overwhelming state of mind, almost as if this isn't actually a song, but just a sudden rush of thoughts running through your mind between two breaths.
"I want to live but I'm told to die" signifying how, while you're not explicitly "told to die", you certainly feel how people can mistreat you to the point of it indirectly feeling like you're told to die
"I want to die but I'm told to live" feels like the opposite, to a certain extent. Like the negative experiences leading you to the edge, people are quick to kick you out of that, just to send you in a similar cycle, highlighted by the repeating of these two phrases. The repeating "I love you" is pictured as a cheap way to make someone feel less bad about themselves without ever taking the time to properly listen to one's personal struggles.
0:40 feels like the overall suppressing of one's emotions, as if they should be some executing machine with no personal feedback on how they feel, like "obediently becoming a dog" says, the requirement to obey everything without asking questions or expressing emotion. It's probably also why "I hold my breath" is constantly stressed onto the listener towards the end. It's the thought of having to shut up and move on without ever doing something about it, postponing it until it stacks other things and makes someone crumble.
0:48 this one hits hard. During my depression I've often been compared to people unknown to me in objectively worse situations, without ever taking a moment to think of how such a person might actually perceive it. It's easy for someone to say when it doesn't affect them, it's hard to hear when it really does. If someone wants to say something about it they should actually try to comfort someone in such a dire situation, not make them feel guilty about being in that situation. That is not helping, far from it. This is later similarly repeated at 1:52, this time in a more irritated and angry tone with the addition of background vocals exaggerating the feeling of frustration.
1:19 pretty well reminds that it's sometimes easier to "obligate ourselves to hold our breath" and not do anything about our problems, afraid of making things unnecessarily complicated and more stressful, especially with the wrong people.
1:46 perfectly pictures the fear of betrayal from trusted people.
2:00 desire of feeling pushed over the edge beyond the point of recovery, y'know what I mean..
2:18 feels like we use the anonymity that our phones give us to make us "feel secure" and the sense of distraction that can be achieved from them.
This song is truly amazing. From every way I try to look at it, it has so much weight to it, even more so to people who've been in such dark and tough situations.
not just depression, but for other people’s experiences or challenges as well; for me, this resonated deeply with me with trying to get trans hrt as a minor.
i would be forced to tell my family in order to get it anyway, but it would be so easy for them to shrug it off as “teenager phase, irrational decisions”
so i had to prove that I had emotional intelligence, wisdom learned, heard of every other person’s own experiences
then, came legal trouble; you cant get hrt in texas as a minor
i kept myself from beating myself up over it, but i wasn’t going to “hold my breath till 18” when time will march endlessly through my boy puberty
so i found a solution; transdiy
but now that solution needs to be discussed again with my family, who have their own worries and concerns, who don’t see how i’ve applied all my wisdom into helping myself not hold my breath, the importance of hrt
im so ditzy and dizzy personality wise and i should be able to worry about normal things
i shouldn’t have to decide “i need a part-time job” to pay for my hrt
“selfishly” it can be seen that i just want my more than capable financial family to pay for my medication for trans hrt
its all so overwhelming. all the research, counterpoints comebacks to explain
i would love someone to talk to aha, my dizzy cord night cord taggy is galaxychoke
ciao ciao thank yous for reading
Feels like the human condition as a whole tbh. Since I feel like everyone who’s suffered can understand this feeling, tho it really is for ppl with very specific experiences. Depression def fits the bill but it fits a lot of ppl.
excellent dissection.....i felt the same way on the feeling of the song.....and your points corroborate this....especially the indirect part....as its well known in japanese culture that people that act/look in a different way(mr goat man) is indirectly ostracized by the community as a whole....almost like a cult(as shown above)....and it gets vicious and direct when these people hide behind anonymity aka social media...as they arent afraid to tell someone to end it all....the song is the mostly about the strictness about japanese culture and the need to obey or else....but the nice thing about it is it can relate to so many different things and people that its genius...as so many miku songs have done
This is a deep interpretation. I was able to develop deep empathy for depression. Thank you.

I feel like not enough English speakers are discussing the fact that non-breath oblige is a play on words with noblesse oblige. It's like this is the responsibility of those who can't or don't breathe to everyone who does. "I want to live but they tell me to die/I want to die but they tell me to live".
そうゆうことだったんだ
0:30 「壮大な内輪ノリを歴史と呼ぶ」でなんかゾクってした。言葉選びのセンス凄まじい。

東のエデンを思い出した
Sorry for the language barrier here, but to clarify I think the song title doesn't have anything to do with "noblesse oblige". The term noblesse oblige literally translates out to nobles obligation in French.
The term non in this context also taking the French into account means no. That's pretty obvious and I don't think that mixed you up at all but put together the full title roughly translates to
No breath obligation or no obligation to breathe. Which really makes more sense ultimately but also give a bit of a heavier tone than one might expect
@@ithomas7788 My opinion is this song title focus on the part of "No breath obligation"
the whole of lyrics are writing about it's forced to live stuffy society, and this song is sang by vocaloid (they don't breathe).
At the same time, there's slightly connected to "nobles" so it's little a bit confusing.
sorry for my bad English
@@sau1721 your English was perfectly fine friend! Couple of hiccups here and there but it was perfectly understandable.
I do agree with you interpretation of the title. It's very similar to mine!
@@ithomas7788 it totally sounds like the French. Being able to feel love in a world of Love™ is a blessing, and in my experience can hurt people who see or hear about it and don't know the feeling. This is a privileged blessing which implies responsibility. They're alone together at the end, and can finally breathe. OP is correct.
I JUST NOTICED SOMETHING SO COOL!
Pinocchio usually has Miku take breaths throughout the song at the end of verses (listen closely, you’ll hear it). However, in this one, she only breathes at the very beginning and end. I thought that was pretty fitting and neat :-)
@ぃゃmeru maybe they’ll need more breaths than miku lmao
so f neat! love it
it really fits the title "non-breath oblige"
@ぃゃmeru Chogakusei Official did! His cover's so good

I do love how this song is literally impossible to sing, there are 2 breaths taken, one in at the beginning, and one at the end. Really something that can only really be done with vocaloid.

Maybe this has already been said, but in the chorus, when Miku says "I love you," it reminds me that those words are usually the thing that stop us from ending our lives. It goes back to the "I want to die but I'm told do live" and it hits me like a brick wall when I put it in that context because when someone says "I love you" when I think about dying it makes me feel terrible, like a bad person
I think everybody wants to die at some point in their lives.

Noblesse oblige is a French term (that the English nobility also enjoyed using) that generally means that the nobility have obligations to fulfil and meant acting noble.
I think the title of the song is a play on this term and personally I believe this song is all about how whenever we complain about what is negatively impacting us, many people turn around and tell us “at least you aren’t -“ or “well think of the people elsewhere who have it worse off” and that comment can easily become internalised.
In order for us to be justified with how unhappy our suffering makes us do we have to have it the worst? Are we obligated to hold our breath, to not breathe? Do we have to die to show that, yes, our suffering really was bad?
Of course not. Whatever feelings you have are valid, no matter how “well off” you believe/others believe you are but it’s a pervasive thought that is hard to erase from the back of your head.
I’m sure you could do a massive analysis on everything in the music video to both prove and disprove this theory, this is pretty surface level. Really what I absolutely love about PinocchioP’s music is that it’s so creative and sometimes very abstract that loads of theories fit. Whatever you find the most meaningful and interesting can be what the song is about.
i really like and relate to your take on this song :o

You will most likely meet new people that will understand and appreciate you for still being here. Someone else doesn't have the right to say whether you didn't go through "enough" or "the worst" since it really impacted you. You were the one experiencing it. So if it hurt like hell; it hurt like hell no matter what anybody else thinks or says. I'm glad you're getting help and hope you start to feel better soon. If anything, you have good taste in music.

The first Pinocchio-p song in while for it to do that to me. Felt like watching a movie
"Through the liquid crystal that robs our imagination,
we hold our breaths and feel secure"
This one hit hard. Amazing lyrics.
"Through the liquid crystal that robs our imagination, we hold our breaths and feel secure."
This part is my favourite line. The liquid crystal is smartphone or television or computer, ones of our escapes in this modern world. Imaginations run wild, be it when you're chatting with someone on the other side of the world, watching movies, listening to music. You feel empty, they're is now half of our life. Trying to escape from the cruel states of the world. Sad and amazing, really.
Our own sanctuary.
Should note that I'm pretty sure the second half of that line is mis-translated. The phrase used, "息の根を止める" means to kill, or to end the life of something, not to hold your breath. It's supposed to be a continuation from the previous line about not doing anything directly in person.
But nature can be useful as well and peaceful. Personally I did spend a lot of time on the computer , phone and video games as a kid and teenager but I think it s still important to aim to improve .
I don’t really get that. As someone on Twitter, the internet is not necessarily an escape as at the end of the day it’s only an extension of the physical world filled with people and things from the physical world. To me the only true escape is your mind.
i think he means the opposite. That phones and apps like twitter rob our ability to think for ourselves and restrict what we can think.
@@Impiedoo Yeah, but the last part is the key to everything: we feel secure. When victims are told that their situation is damaging them, is often excused by their own brains that they've gotten used to it, thus the process of getting out and recovering becomes extremely difficult. That's the same as social media and electronic devices in general, they make our lives "easier", but drain our perspectives of what's outside, how a life without it would feel (probably calling it "boring" or "unsafe".) In a generation that has grow around all of this, adding the fact that we're told to live according to what the majority lives like, supressing our own thoughts and especially the way we express what's on our imagination, being outside and being inside doesn't make much of a difference in terms of what we think, because we will still be restricted. So because one makes us feel secure, we tend to choose that over any other good thing the world outside has to offer us.

oh man I love how there's themes of having issues with the state of society in this, how there's the feeling of trying to fit in and feeling suffocated by the expectations, and you're supposed to be thankful of what you have, and that distorts to the point where it's seen as a bad thing or looked down upon when you show any negative emotion instead
I'm from latin america, and I think that's also an issue here-- we've been through a lot of bad events historically, so we've grown to be very focused on positive things to cope with our issues, but that becomes a problem when people start to expect you to tolerate everything, and people who express their unhappiness with certain things are seen as causing problems for what they see as "not bad enough"-- you're expected to tolerate things until a breaking point where you can't anymore

It was fun taking a night with friends theory-crafting about this song, which is absolutely great, added to favorites immediatly. The music, the visuals, the story, the symbolism...everything is absolutely wonderful and really interesting !
So, I'll share some thoughts here. I'm not a native english speaker and I do not understand japanese so there may be some errors here and there and things I can't understand. And I do not believe to be right about the theories or interpretations I'm about to share. I just think it'll be interesting to share them with others to give ideas, or point out things in a certain way or to put things in a certain light. And in any case, I think this song can be interpreted as you'd like it to be, we all see something different in this, but I think we generally agree that this song is awesome and the visuals are stunning. Well, onto the theories and analyzes
/!\ warning, very long post !
First, if we take the story somewhat literally, the world the character lives in is divided between two "races", humans and sheep-people (Or something of the like, it seems there are some different kind of horns here and there). It seems that they live in a society shared by the two, but this may not have been the case in ancient times because of the representation of the wolf we see at the beginning and later in the video. It may be that, before, sheeps represented humans as a danger, a hunter, thus symbolised by the wolf.
Our character we follow in the video may be in love with a human, or at least someone. At 0:11, we see him trying to touch, then grab the hand of the doll, which quickly change into a white flag. At first, I thought the "I love you" 's repeated in the video were random, I think they aren't. "I love you" may be what the character want to say to this person they like, but cannot. Because they "Can't breathe", something in the social rules, or the rules he is under, prevent him from doing so without breaking the "peace". I think the song overall is centered around the idea of being prevented from expressing oneself. It's about wanting to say what you're thinking, what you're feeling, but you stop yourself from saying them because of the social shackles society put on you. Because you have a "standing" and need to abide by the rules or risk causing problems for yourself or others. Plus, as it was said repeatedly in the comments of this video, the pronunciation of "Non-Breath Oblige" is a play on the term "Nobless Oblige", which ties to not being able to express yourself because you need to maintain standing or appearance.
So, they want to say they love them, but repress themselves, symbolised by the white flag the character is holding at 0:13 after trying to take the doll hand. I do not quite understand the scene of the theater that follows, but maybe it symbolises the character having somewhat of an important place ? Or an important standing. I think this is why he is the target of some sort of hunt, or violent action towards them. They do not get shot literally, but I think it represents them realizing they are in danger. We then saw them running with leaves blowing around, I think it is literally representing them running in a forest, towards a safe place, the shelter we see then briefly at 2:25.
But what is the danger ? From what are they running from ? A violent group, most likely. After the first scenes, at 0:24, we see an abundance of weapons and humans holding them. I think it represents an increasingly violent society, the one the character is part of. I believe the society the character lives in is suffering from an increase in extremism, more particularly, cultural extremism. This increase in tension between the two groups in the video (Humans and Sheep) is valid on both side. Both side are getting worst as time goes by. At 0:34, "I want to live but I'm told to die. I want to die but I'm told to live" as the character falls into this colorful void is a representation of the paradox that if you want to exist and express yourself, there will be people who'd wish bad things upon you or agressively react, and yet if you stay silent and hold your breath to maintain appearance and peace there will be people who tell you to express yourself more and would want you to take part.
At 0:40, this scene may represents the character stuck between wanting to tell or express his love (The flowers) and not being able (or willing) to talk about it or share it with their special someone (The chair, which may symbolises depression, suicidal thoughts). So the character is in a bad place, which is important because, just after that, we see a wolf staggering, with blood on it's hand, followed by faces of sheep smeared in blood. This could symbolise that this wolf (Probably a human, which are symbolised negatively by the sheep as wolves) was perceived as a source of danger, or that the sheeps had pin their problems on them. Just after that, at 0:44 (And it's really quick, maybe have to slow down the video), we see the wolf on the floor, surrounded by sheeps (Due to their tails), followed by a hand holding a stone and throwing it. I think this scene is important and literal. I think there was a situation where some sheeps stoned a "wolf" because they may have thought that some things were their fault. And I think this "wolf" died in the process. And this was one violent event between the two people too many.
I am saying this because I think this event is referenced again at 1:57 (Again, it goes really quick, may have to slow down the video). We see bloody hands smearing the sheep people on the representation we saw at the beginning. At first I thought this was saying the sheep people were attacked, but after looking around a bit, I think it represents bloodlust. Bloodlust seeping into the sheeps, against the wolves. We then see a stone cut in half, to show the colors inside. I have no idea of the meaning of this. We see then stones on display, probably for selling them. But for what ? The next image is a bit dreadful. We see a figure hanged by their feet on a what looks like something made for an execution. We see sheep people around, so we may assume this figure is a human. The words "Sympathy, envy, jealousy and resentment" are an evolution of feelings, that grows increasingly negative which may indicate the evolution of the feelings of the character. One of my friend said that apparently, when someone is getting stoned as an execution, they sometimes get hanged by their feet ? I do not know if that's true.
But what about our main character ? We see them at 2:00 with "Black tears falling down". I believe that the character participated in this cruel event, due to their frustration and "ugly emotions", but immeditaly had regrets about the deed they had done. Since they let out their "Ugly emotions" they became "Snow White Birds". I think that's meant to say they saw the ugliness of actively participating in the increase of tension and violence, and that by expressing themselves in this wrong way, they felt at first relief of those emotions getting out, but regret realizing the horror of releasing it this way. Lastly, at 2:10, "Swimming with deep sea fish, below the freezing point" and "Looking up at the stars" can represent the path they took and where they ended up, that they saw and were at the lowest point, with a cold heart, and then immeditaly went up to see the "Stars", understanding the errors of this way, maybe.
Anyway, returning at an earlier point in the video, after the stone is thrown, at 0:46 we see a book getting closed, a mouth and someone with their hands up saying "There are many people in this world who can't breathe." I think those people, increasing in numbers, represent the extremism of humans, being convinced that they must act radically because "They can't breathe", they can't express negativity against the other people, in our case, the sheeps. They oppose themselves radically and violently against this group, believing that they are trying to be supressed, repressed in a way or another by the sheeps.
After that scene, at 0:53 we get glimpses of different kind of games. I think each one is a facet of society, and the struggles within it. First we have chess, with two pawns, one sheep, one human. It may represent opposition of culture. Then we have what I believe is monopoly, so it represents money or propriety, an opposition of riches. After that comes the game of Go, which may represent an opposition of territories, a war of territory. Next comes Jenga, which represent a game of balance, probably representing the difficult and frail balance of society and how you are to be careful for it not to collapse on itself. I do not know the next game after this one and it's potential symbolism sadly. And the last one is a reference to a game called Pop-up Pirate I believe. A game of tension, because you have to put swords in the barrel until one eventually make the pirate pops up. The more you add, the more likely the pirate will pop. Therefore I do believe it to be a representation of tensions, violent ones, in society, that accumulates until one event eventually makes the whole thing blow up with dire consequences. Then, it may mean that the "wolf" we saw being stoned was this event that made everything go "pop" like said, especially because, as cards are thrown in the air, so is one doll, and the dolls without sheep wool in the video may be meant to represent humans.
(Post was way, way too long, will try to post it following this comment. What am I doing with my life I've broken the youtube comment character limit. Multiple times. I think.)
(Welcome to analysis too long, second part)
Afterwards, there is the sentence "I stop in the minefield and obediently becomes a dog", which may be again a reference to how the character feels regarding what they have to do in this society not to "blow up" the mines made by the social rules, so they "become a dog", meaning they shut their mouth and obey those rules. We then get "No-Breath Oblige" : They cannot express themselves, they abide by the rules. The scene between 1:06 and 1:28 I'm not sure I quite understand it's meaning. Maybe it represents them trying to reach for something they cannot possess ? And I am unsure of what the wooly plushes represents. They come into view at the "Complexes" part, so maybe they are representing people's complexes, or struggles ? We do see one another at the end at 3:20, so they may be representing internal struggles, like the one the character seems to be experiencing.
At 1:19 we have some visuals I'm not really sure of the meaning. At first there is an insect crossing a very thin bridge, which may represent the relation between the two cultures and maybe the insect crossing represents a change in allegiance ? We see a city, then a shot of a board with informations on it. There seems to be pictures of people put on there, maybe perpetrators or victims, if we believe the society the character lives in is becoming more and more violent. "For the sake of our convenience and freedom, we obligate ourselves to hold our breath", in order to maintain peace (Social peace, personnal peace...) with others, we swallow our feelings and what we'd want to say, we do not allow ourselves to "breathe". The fantastic visual of the character joining hands and lowering their head against a strong wind is the representation of them focusing and finding strength in order to prevent themselves from breathing, thus the multiples "I can't breathe" which is what the character truly think when he upholds the standing he has to have with others and the society around him.
At 1:38, we have a return of "Wanting to live but told to die. Wanting to die but told to live.", an echo of the paradox mentioned before, saying one thing and the contrary at the same time. The first hands seems to be trying to grab each other, but failing. I'm unsure of what it exactly represents here. The next hands symbols I do not understand. We then see at 1:46 a hooded figure holding a gun and firing it. I believe it to be a human hooded figure from the extremist movement shown at 0:46, and the character is afraid of them "Wielding chainsaw saying it's in self-defense". People are getting violent and dangerous, and they believe they are in the right, because they are defending themselves and their beliefs. Interestingly, it says "Afraid of Decent people". So it is a critique, but balanced by the fact that, in truth, the people wielding those chainsaws are "decent". I think that means that even if they react violently and out of proportions, they are still people, with reasons behind their violence, with their struggle, their complexes.
At 1:48, we very briefly (Slow down the video again) sheep people climbing on each other, and all holding the main character. It looks as if they're holding him down, or pulling him down. Maybe it represents the social standing the character has to have. He is from this race of sheep people, with their culture, and he feel as if those are chains preventing him from getting to "A brilliant love, brilliant spring" ? "Important things are disappearing each and every day" is the next line, while two hooded figures are putting a painting of a sheep. Again, I think the hooded figures are humans that fell into extreme ways and literally trying to remove the symbols, the representations, of the sheeps. This extremism is met by anguish, pain and resentment by the sheeps. At 1:52, we see groups of figures, but without the hood. We can see their horns, and they have their hands joined in union. It may symbolizes the fact that the sheeps answer this violence saying "There are many people in this world who don't even know love". They answer those extremes with, what I believe is, another extreme. Getting close to each other, and being one front against the humans. Because we do not see any humans in this group, sheeps and only sheeps. They answer by saying they too are surpressed, oppressed, and cry against the rising of those violence with what could be called communitarianism ? I think so too because the next scene is the one of the execution, the black tears, and the "Ugly thoughts".
What follows at 2:17 is interesting. Because I feel like it can be taken in a lot of ways, and be both literal and symbolism. At least I think the message behind it is clear, but the situation is really weird in the story theory I'm presenting. We see a hand trying to reach out, then a flash of images and colors, of previous times in the video, presented on a phone screen that is smashed at the end. With the lines "We don't directly do anything in person. Through the liquid crystal that robs our imagination, we hold our breaths and feel secure.". I think the message conveyed is related to how their community (And ours) is hyper-connected, and that we can find all kind of experiences, all kind of talk, all kind of images, all kind of anything really, with the internet, social media, our phones. And that we can "do anything" and feel secured that it will not blow up in our face directly. It's about the security of not having to "do anything" in person, protected behind a screen. About not talking directly, face to face, to one another. Maybe it also means that the social rules that binds us are less present there, and that results in chaos ? (The part with all the phones behind our character and him apparently screaming and just fading in). Not sure about "Robs us of our imagination" part however.
But well, what does it mean for our character ? So, were we last left him, he was running in a forest, in order to probably escape a violent situation, maybe a hunt for him, because he has some importance or symbolism that makes him the target of a violent act. I believe that he finds refuge in a shelter in the forest, and looks at his phone to see the situation outside. As he does, he sees all the good and bad that's put up online about his situation. Maybe it's on the news, maybe he sees comments on the situation, on the state of society, good and bad. In the end, he let go of the phone that smashes on the ground, and he looks about, maybe surprised, repulsed by what he saw through it ?
At that point, I'm unsure about the rest of the story but. I think that the character believes he may as well die this day, if he's found. Like, literally. That he has find refuge in this hidden shelter but if he's found out, he will be killed. And if that's so, he wants to at least say what he always wanted to say but couldn't to this one person he loves. "I love you". He is stuck with this feelings he wants to share. But at this point, why does he just, not do that ? Since the world is hyper-connected, maybe just calling this person or trying to talk to them online would reveal his hiding place. So he is stuck between his life and his true feelings. But that's just a bit of a stretch. At the end we see him huddled and looking at a wooly doll. I think this symbolizes him coming to term with his complex and his "Non-breath oblige". The fact that the second breath we hear in the entire song is just at the end makes me believe he finally decides to tell about his feelings. Thinking about it, maybe the first and second breath are one and the same. He tells about his feeling, so he tells the story, and how he decided to "breathe". Again, a bit of a stretch.
So yeah, that was all my thoughts and analyzes for this video. I realized I did not analyze the first lyrics, and to be honest the first part I am not sure I'm getting except for the fact he may be in love. But like said, I did not make this like it's the truth and that's really what's happening. It's just thoughts and what me and my friends believed to see and understand in this story/video.
Thank you for reading this far (I didn't think it was that long at first but dear god). I hope it was at least a bit interesting and it gave you ideas for your interpretation of this song and story. This song is definitely one of my favorites, and the visuals are just really good. Grats to Pinocchiop and the animator(s?) for this wonderful piece of art !
@@Silentsandmist oh man, GREAT analysis dude !!! and I love the passion you have to write such a long essay - thank you so much for helping me better understand the song, its fantastic !!!
to add my opinion, i think the "We don't directly do anything in person. Through the liquid crystal that robs our imagination, we hold our breaths and feel secure" line is abt how we have hopes and dreams to change our society for the better, but we dont do anything directly in person. we dont do anything bcs reality (the liquid crystal) robs us of our dream, hence making us feel helpless and powerless. in order to feel secure, we hold our breaths, not wanting to take the risk of possible consequences from doing what youre most passionate abt or make a change for society
i hope u had tons of fun writing this, cuz man i def had fun reading it !!! i appreciate a whole lot !!!
@@cupperskates5234 Thank you so much ! It was fun to do along with friends and I'm glad you liked it ! You have an interesting take on this line, I didn't think that it could have this meaning, but it put a new and unique spin on it I think ! This would go along the idea of not being able to do anything/express oneself, being powerless as you say.
I am glad you liked my analysis enough to comment about it. And again, it's really nice you liked it, it's really appreciated !
the game after jenga appears to be mancala, in which the objective is to capture all of the opponent's pieces or to capture more pieces than the opponent.
this was a nice theory to read through and helped me to better understand it, so thank you!
some other points that i think are worth mentioning:
the hooded figures are indeterminate as humans or sheep, as the hoods cover the main identifying features (horns/ears/eyes) of a sheep. they could be humans, or maybe they could be sheep who are trying to fit in as humans.
i think it's interesting as well how the video begins and ends. it starts with the main character sitting on the ground surrounded by a lot of other people (though they don't pay any attention to him), he breathes, and he is then seen with one of the 'human' dolls (while surrounded by a lot of other dolls). when the video ends, he is alone with only one doll, a woolly one which seems to me to represent the sheep. then he breathes again.
i wondered if the change from the dolls seeming human to having sheep-like qualities could maybe represent some sort of cultural assimilation.
i'm also not sure that the stoning is literal. i think it is more supposed to be further representation of the war between humans and sheep. the stones which are being sold and the stone which is cut open make me think that it is "normal" to throw stones at the other side-or, that it is normal to hate the other side and scorn them. it is encouraged to do so, but inside those rocks it isn't just one colour. it's many, suggesting maybe that things aren't as simple as hate (represented by the outside of the rocks being all the same) and that if people didn't just follow the crowd, if they really thought and looked past their own hatred, they would be able to form their own opinions on humans; or see them as individuals; or realise that there are more options than just hating them.
overall though this was very insightful and a good read! it's cool to see how much thought you've put into this :)
@@frostyclouded Thank you so much for those kind words ! I'm glad it helped and you found it useful. Thank you also for your insight on the game of Mancala, I was really out of ideas trying to find what it was !
I think you may be right about the stoning. I've looked again at the scenes and it's true I didn't have an explanation as for why the stone was cut open with a multy layered and colored interior. It may indeed represent the fact that, indeed, hate has a lot of reasons for it to be, that there are a lot of ways one can end up hating someone else to the point of acting against them. And that indeed each side considers it normal to "throw stones" at the other. The two other points you put a finger on are also interesting, with the first hooded figures maybe being either sheep or human, since yes, we do not see defining features. And yes, one of my friend also pointed out the mirror of the first doll scene and the end scene, and the change from a "human" doll to a "sheep" doll. Yet If the sheep doll does not represent struggle, but some sheep like qualities, I am unsure of what it could mean, perhaps as you say, cultural assimilation.
Again, thank you for reading, commenting and for your insight on the points you've mentioned, it's really cool to see what others are thinking and what meaning we each find in this !
Daamn, PinnochioP wasn't kidding with, "non-breath." Unsingable. You say "息が詰まる" that many times that fast, and it becomes true. Deathly.
And then there’s Chogakusei (’s great cover!)
