I took ZUPCO Train in Harare, Zimbabwe Africa Ep12.

  • The railway transport is managed by a company called ZUPCO which is an abbreviation for Zimbabwe United Passenger Company.
    It has 3 routes Tynwald route, Ruwa city route and Western Route.
    Today I shall be taking you to the
    the Western service from city center to Mufakoze. It leaves the Harare station at 5:15 am and arrives at Mufakoze by 6:10 am. The return journey leaves Mufakoze at 6:25am and arrives at Harare station, city center by 7:20am. A good time to get to work!
    These passenger trains operates only at Peak hours to ease congestion on roads . That means they only operate in the morning and evening
    One thing I must appreciate from my experience is the timeliness of the train. Also on your way from Mufakoze you will have a beautiful view of Harare as you approach the city.

    This reminds me of going back to my grandma rural home after it was neglected for almost 30 years. We had to remove overgrown weeds and shrubs to get to the dilapidated buildings left at the mercy of the weather for decades. National Railways of Zimbabwe, I hope your efforts in Zupco train will continue until we have that train to Chitungwiza which was supposed to be constructed from 1986 but is still on papers, that is If they still exist. • @donaldtelfer8468
      @donaldtelfer8468 2 года назад

      The railway line from Harare to Gweru was electrified in the early 1980s, paid for by the UK Thatcher government (development aid).
      During the hyperinflation, scrap metal, especially copper, was easily sold for cash, and all of the copper wire in the catenary above the tracks from Harare to Gweru for conducting electricity to electric locomotives, was stolen, a little at a time.
      .
      A one way ticket, second class, from Bulwayo to Victoria Falls used to be about ZWD$18, in the 1980s, from memory. Victoria Falls to Livingstone was something like 85 cents.
      The NRZ had about 600 locomotives, and Botswana had about say 5 locomotives, at Zimbabwe's independence (1980). Zimbabwe now has less than 100 locomotives left in working order, whereas Botswana now has about 45 locomotives.
      .
      Meanwhile, more recently, the PRC has built / upgraded a railway line in Kenya !
