As an actual goth who stayed in the scene until now, almost at 30, I really love seeing the kids in south park. They are basically the essence of what younglings are who just discovered the scene, take everything way too seriously and try to gatekeep the scene from others who also just learned about it.

I remember getting into my scene/goth phase as a kid, trying to find other scene/goth kids to hang out with was exhausting because of how gatekeepy they all were, especially if they had been in the "phase" for like a few more months than you.
Nowadays, I'm just happy being me, still wearing scene/goth clothes form time to time rather than try-harding all the time.

In germany there was a whole comedy group who started making more and more homosexual jokes with the homosexuals as the protagonists. They were praised in the late 90s and early 2000s, but tide shifted and the young SJW doom them.
They got awards and thanks for being so progressive in their early success, the humor was focused on stereotypes and over-dramatization in absurd situations. Its also a Star Trek Parody.
They are literally afraid to tell new stories with the fan loved characters as nowadays idiocy would probably lynch them.

One of my favorite bits about the Goth Kids came in a creator commentary (I think it was for Coon and Cthulu episode) where they mentioned how they thought about updating the Kids look. They even went out of their way to lookup more modern goth looks and trends only to realize they're pretty much the exact same as the 90's.😁

Well there's been plenty of new either goth specific or goth adjacent bands over the past several decades, but the classics are the classics. Even though Andrew Eldritch may disagree and say that The Sisters Of Mercy is hard rock... I kinda think that those classic batcave bands just feel pigeonholed and are upset that they don't have more mainstream appeal, but ultimately, rock in its various genres and sub genres has fallen off the charts in the past several decades so they should appreciate the audience they have, I doubt anyone else is about to get into their music.

I kind of wished the Matt and Trey went a little bit more into how goth and emo were started as music subcultures with goth initially being derived from post-punk and and emo being derived from post-hardcore. The original and first Gothic Novel was The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole way back in 1764 and was a Gothic horror. Then in 1818 Mary Shelly created a shuft in the genre with Frankenstein by making the villain a physical embodiment of human folly brought to life through science. Before this, the villain was usually an evil man or a supernatural creature. Edgar Allen Poe wasn't until 1840 when he wrote his first book of short fiction, Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. However it's said that his first story was Metzengerstein written in 1832, a Gothic tale of a family feud.

The music is the most important thing such as Goth Rock, Post-Punk, Darkwave etc etc. That's what separates the goths from the emos. Also, the way the Goth kids call everyone a poseur confuses me because the Goth subculture (and many other subcultures such as Punk) usually uses that word to describe someone who tries to be Goth but clearly isn't, therefore they're a poseur. If someone isn't trying to be a Goth in the first place, what are they a poseur of?

The music they listened to from the stick of truth made me start listening to goth music like The Cure, Siouxsie and the banshees, Bauhaus, bands like that. While gothic is the love of the macabre and darker stuff, Goth is about the music and politics, South Park actually put in goth music and made their OWN goth music, making one that sounds like A Forest. The explanation, goths think the world is messed up and emos think they're messed up, its kinda true- but the actual difference would be the music since both emo and goth are music :)

That's cool to know that they wrote goth kids so well. I mean I had a feeling they did but the honest truth is I've never been goth so there's a chance that I just simply thought they did it right. I wish my wife would be in the South Park because she could be a potentially good judge of it. She likes hanging out with that kind of crowd I mean I don't think they were like as hardcore as it was mostly nerds but she did like hanging out with that kind of proud. I myself am a nerd but I just have never been gone.
Actually what's strange is I've grown to appreciate them more because I think the style and how they dress is just really cool. But when I was a teenager for some reason I kind of had a problem with them and maybe it has to do with me actually generalizing goths as emos back in the day without realizing that there's actually a distinction or a difference so I don't know.

a fun fact about the vampkids is that it actually correlates with the history of the subculture, during the 90s the "mall goths" were like the amp kids they also gressed in black cosplayed goths and hung around malls to scare people, and because of the christian paranoia alot of parents got scared thinking it was satanic and thhnkinig theyre actually dangerous wich actually put alot fo goth kids in danger as parents and schools started to take action against them so it makes sense, it makes you think about how much matt and trey actually know stuff abou it and lived through it not being goth themselves

If they were only pranking the one guy (who essentially thought he was betraying humanity) why didn't they use a child actor instead of a real Goth... and did the gardener guy think he was betraying man and woman kind?

In the event that no one has said which book you were talking about, it is probably the Count of Monte Cristo. There is a very beautiful animation that is a retelling of the story in a fun sort of sci-fi like way called Gankutsuo. Highly recommend, if only for the interesting use of texture and just how pretty everything looks.

It is really good that South Park was a series that actually did their research and understood the goth culture. Then making the continuing point of the fact that they are not interchangeable with emo and vampire cultures. With the world of South Park reflecting the misjudgment and misconceptions of goth culture with the previously mentioned cultures above. Not only the point made through the show but even in their video game adaptations do so as well. Stick of Truth and even the DLC of Fractured but Whole with Henrietta as an ally. I had goth friends back in high school and even in college who said that they enjoyed the goth kids in the show. I remember even reading that one of the duo creators of South Park had been approached and thanked by a goth for the portrayal and point out that goth culture isn’t just the clothes, makeup, and fashion (which it isn’t just dressing like a goth to be goth).

It’s funny, I kind of had the opposite reaction. I knew a couple “goth kids” in high school and while they enjoyed dark literature (so do I…hp lovecraft has been my favorite horror author for 20 years…recently joined by junji ito) and were fluent in both sarcasm and nihilism, they weren’t head over heels different from the rest of us. They were mostly confused high school kids trying to make their way in a new reality in which everyone was trying on new “identities” to see what fit. In my estimation, South Park took that culture and distilled it down to its essence…much like they did with the PC frat guys, garrison as trump and basically everyone else they lampoon. That’s a good thing though…there’s a time and a place for nuance and in the world of South Park, that mostly exists in overarching “moral” of any given episode as opposed to the characters themselves.

They nailed the clothes and the bands for sure ! When that first goth saga episode first aired, I laughed my balls off when I saw the “Skippy Puppy” (referencing irl industrial act Skinny Puppy) and “blauhaus” (obviously spoofing Bauhaus) poster on Henrietta’s wall!
As for the attitude, I’d say the goth circles I move in act more like the vampire kids, waxing pretentious about “we are very thpiritual beings per se” 😂

As a trad goth I really wish you went more into detail about goth music. It's literally impossible to be goth and not listen to goth music, it's like the metalhead subculture, how you can't be a metalhead without listening to metal. The goth scene started in the 80s and it sparked from bands like Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, The Cure, etc. Music has always been the most important element and defining aspect of the scene since it started, it has always been about the music. The fashion is also important, don't get me wrong, but listening to goth music is what makes you goth, not dressing gothic. You don't just put an outfit together and now you're goth, you really just have to know the history, the bands, the songs, etc.

I promptly cast it aside once I realized how cringey it was. Anyway, I still consider myself goth to this day, and I've always liked the goth kids in South Park. If you can't laugh at yourself, then you should probably lighten up. No one is above criticism and mockery, so I take the jokes in stride.

Some things about mainstream interpretation of goth will never change, which is a shame because Trey and Matt clearly understand/respect post-punk, goth rock, and darkwave music - but a lot of people outside of the scene won't notice those details. 🙃
