    Awesome! Great philosophical theme! I admire the patience to get these shots at golden hour, to get that red-golden halation glow and of course the great shots that use mechanical stabilization. Super nice steadycam-ish and hyperlapse shots! 2:09 - doesn't look like Super 8, but it might be just grain management in post. Fantastic choice of music. I love well written and well performed orchestral pieces. Wishing you all the success you deserve.

    • @zachmmoore
      @zachmmoore  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks so much! Glad to hear you enjoyed it. The shot at 2:09 was done on my Nizo Professional, but unfortunately there was a mechanical issue for that roll where the camera motor wouldn’t run at a consistent speed, resulting in a pretty severe flicker as each frame was exposed for differing times. I ended up keeping this shot but had to apply a de-flicker in post to salvage it so it does look a little off compared to the rest. Thankfully the camera has been fixed so hopefully no more flicker issues in the future!

    Hi Zach,
    I've watched this video 5 times it's really great. How much do you shoot with a tripod? Like the shot of the woman when she says "I've had a rough twenty years" is that a tripod, do you just set it up and wait for something to happen? Also is the boom up shot at 1:40 handheld? It looks really good. How much prep do you have to do regarding lighting? Do you test different locations at different times of day to assess sunlight? Do you have any advice for colour grading?
    I understand if you don't want to answer all or any questions. Great video, would love to watch the full film.

    • @zachmmoore
      @zachmmoore  Месяц назад +3

      @@Kourosh.Keshmiri Thanks for watching Kourosh and for your questions! I’d say about 80% of the shots are done with a tripod. In the case of the silhouette of the woman, that was just a scene I stumbled upon when looking for shots as the sun was setting so I quickly set up my tripod and camera while she stood there. For every moment like that I’m able to capture, there’s at least 10 that get away so it really can be a game of patience and luck. The boom shot at 1:40 was done using a motorized slider to keep a consistent speed and steady path. I am always keeping in mind lighting and time of day when setting up most shots, while some shots are just pure luck and done in the moment. Many of the locations are quite familiar to me so I have an idea of when to look for something particular and the right look I’m going for. It can be a combination of the time of day, time of year, crowds, etc. all playing a factor. My best advice for color grading is to hire a professional! Hah maybe not the most realistic in each case for everyone, but for me I know it is not my strongest skill. Having worked professionally in post-production for over 12 years now I have worked with some great colorists and was lucky to get some help from a former co-worker and very talented colorist named Mickey Micklos. For a DIY approach to color on super 8 film my advice would be to get an HDR Log scan in ProRes 4444 or DPX in order to have the most information to work with. Start with a good base grade of global adjustments and work your way from there on any local adjustments, power windows, masks, etc. Hope this is helpful!

    Wow! I love the filming, the editing and the way it avoids showing talking heads in this teaser. The movie would surely be great with a completely digital workflow. But the emotions that the - well shot, well scanned and well color graded - Super 8 footage triggers in connection with the voices/sound are incredible. There are just so many great shots condensed in those 3 minutes...
    Question: Which of the camera/lenses used have given you the images that you like most in terms of overall sharpness? (Some of the footage even reminds me of 16 mm films.) // Did you apply sharpening plus grain removal in post?

    • @zachmmoore
      @zachmmoore  12 дней назад

      Thank you very much Chris! The Beaulieu 4008 ZMII with the Schneider-Kreuznach Optivaron 6-66mm f/1.8 is my day-to-day camera and gives me the best results in my opinion. I typically use the Nizo and Nikon for more specific purposes. I did apply sharpening to some of the wide shots, but tried to keep it minimal and only where needed. There is no grain reduction/removal on any of the footage, while a couple of the shots needed a de-flicker applied due to a camera malfunction on one of my rolls.

      Don't ask for the camera as it's just the ususal mix of Beaulieu, Nizo and Nikon. Don't ask for the stock because it's the usual mix of Kodak Vison. Ask who set up the shots, who worked on the narrative, who did the grade. You can use any Super 8 camera for a well done project.

      This was all shot using Kodak 50D, 200T, and 500T Vision 3 negative stock. I didn't use any Ektachrome for this project. I think the super 8 negative stocks have gotten that reputation online because so few films on RUclips/social media apply a proper color grade to their flat scans. The negative stocks are gorgeous and have so much to offer when put through a proper workflow!
