      Considering we are in a similar situation it wouldn't be hard to believe they would take a similar path. The DS was extremely popular and is one of the best selling consoles. It was a revolutionary console for having 2 separate screens with one being touch. It ammases a huge library of games and large player base. The next handheld comes along and they just add to the formula with a 3d screen and better performance while also allowing backwards compatibility so all those players have a reason to upgrade.
      However since the switch is the first console in a long time (gamecube for consoles, and the gameboy for portable) to not offer any sort of backwards compatibility, though unlikely due to the continued use of cartridges and is likely to be similar to the switch (with some little gimmick to entice upgrading), they could have started down a road that would lead to the end of backwards compatibility.

    Cartridges are basically necessary if you want good battery life on your handheld. A spinning disc reader eats up your battery so much and is noisy as hell. Not to mention a lot of extra parts that could break during travel or when you drop it...

  • @SenpaiSoren
    @SenpaiSoren Год назад +11

    Regarding cartridge usage: a huge problem with any optical media is that it’s incredibly prone to skipping if it’s jostled. CD players solved this in the early 2000s by reading data into memory so that, in the event of a jostle, it can detect and read from the buffer, thus preventing skips. However, in an audio CD, you can do this more easily; after you play the data for seconds 1-3, you’re going to need the data for seconds 4-6, so it’s easy to know what you need to load into memory. It’s a bit more difficult with a video game - the game doesn’t know what data you’re going to be accessing ahead of time, so it’s harder to know what to buffer. Optical media on a portable system may require increased load times to buffer more data, or increased costs for fast internal memory so more data can be buffered throughout / it can be loaded more quickly. Part of the expense of cartridges has been that flash memory prices were incredibly high through late last year due to shortages. As that’s calmed down, it seems likely that Nintendo’s next system will be able to offer larger bucket sizes for cartridges (anticipating an absolute max of 256gb which rarely if ever gets used) at the same if not better prices as the Switch’s lower capacity cartridges.

    As long as they are working with a handheld/hybrid console they have to stick with cartridges, trying to have a disc spinning while using something that could be moving around will just lead to damages, even the PSP's UMDs weren't a good solution for this (i've had the metal disc in the center come loose making the UMD useless), which is why the vita went with cartridges as well.

    I believe there's some confusion about backwards compatibility because some developers talk about it in the same sentence with cross gen compatibility on new games. And sure, a new game available on the old system doesn't provide incentive for the new system to be bought, but that's a different thing. Hopefully Nintendo is smart enough to understand this simple distinction, but I never like things that rely on hoping Nintendo understands something the rest of us see as obvious.

Insiders passed along info that a new Nvidia Tegra chip was in production, which coincided very well with production of a new dock and model (the OLED dock and SWOLED). The dock specs in particular led to analysts believing that this was a full Switch Pro and not a minor hardware revision as the OLED dock has upgraded display out to support 4K 60 signal output to 4K TVs. So the reporters put all this info together, and not unreasonably speculated that the SWOLED was actually a Switch Pro with an upgraded Tegra chip. Sakurai sure is continuing his exact SSBU marketing setup. MP4 would show off the Switch 2 nicely. Nintendo polled how people used their Switch. New building. Miyamoto telling devs to do 4K. Something's brewing.

    I'm sure the next nintendo console will be backwards compatible because people will be buying the original switch games for years to come so nintendo will still be making a lot of cash no need to worry about the next nintendo console nintendo said we will listen to what the people want I guarantee we will not be disappointed great vid keep up the good work

    To clarify, the BC comment is 3rd party publishers not happy with low software sales on PS5 and Series S/X because of BC and likely lobbying Nintendo to drop it. I doubt Nintendo will listen but the low software sales is for real. We're 3 years into the generation and cross-gen is still a thing. PS5 software sales in Japan is atrocious. The list goes on.

    The backwards compatability thing...I can't imagine they believe people will buy Switch games again for the Switch 2.
    There's a world of difference between porting a Wii U title to Switch and porting a Switch title to the Switch 2. And an even bigger difference when talking about GC and Wii games getting ported to Switch.
    It'll be very disappointing if I can't continue my backlog on the new console.

    I’d really like to see a Switch 2 console be named the “Super Switch”, evoking the old SNES format. It would add the nostalgia element for old school fans, sound more fun than a numerical sequel, and it rolls right off the tongue!
    Everyone could shortern the name to “SS” aaaaaand never mind this is a terrible idea ignore me.

    Hi Arlo ! I’m a new viewer and I love your content! I guess I’m wondering why Nintendo would drop Zelda: TOTK if they had a new console ready for next year during holiday. Why not save TOTK and promote it in a big way with the new console?

      If they have another (or several) big game(s) planned for the release they don't want to cannibalise sales. Also if the new console is backwards compatible they can use TOTK as a selling point of improved performance.

    The most obvious way holding off launch can lead to ample stock would be having an additional six months of plants manufacturing systems, so millions of additional units are available. Makes sense to me.

    10:08 This comment was about playing backwards compatible games instead of next gen ones. I don't think whoever said this didn't think of people who buy re-released games they already had but for the newer system. The group who does that is such a small minority that publishers probably don't care. What I think they meant is new next gen games needing to compete against the catalogue of games people already own or popular Switch titles that are probably cheaper and so make people less eager to buy new next gen titles.
    The release window of a console is a golden opportunity to sell a game people otherwise might not buy. Now they will buy it since the options are just so limmited. Imagine you publish a platformer with next gen graphics, something akin to Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Maybe the mechanics aren't that exciting. But it's the hot new thing that looks cool on the improved hardware. That would sell like crazy in the early release of the new console when people are hyped about what the machine is capable off. But not so much if you could also play Mario Odyssey or Kirby and the Forgotten World on the same console. Then you need to compete against a very safe bet for a first game to play on the new console.

    • @zodayn
      @zodayn Год назад +1

      It would be benefitial to both Nintendo and 3rd party publishers if the next gen consolse wasn't backwards compatible. Since Nintendo would be able to sell its biggest hits again for full price to new customers or even for the next gen upgrade to existing consumers. While 3rd party publishers would feel safe that they don't have to compete against the first party heavy hitters. For Nintendo the choice to make is mostly about early wins vs late wins. A backwards compatible console is more attractive since a large group already has tons of games they can play on it. This makes it sell better at launch but worse later on. Whereas no backwards compatibility makes it less attractive at launch but could result in better profits for rereleased games. Which makes me think that if Nintendo is confident in this console's selling power they would leave backwards compatibility out, but if they think it's not as big a sales monster they might have to include it. And by the sounds of it the thing is just a more powerful Switch. And a more powerful console that is basically just another Switch but with hardly any games on it doesn't sound like it would sell that amazingly well.
      So my bet in on it being backwards compatible. Which is good for most every gamer. I'd love to see TotK run in say 1440p or whatever. But there's downsides too. It also means MK8 is still playable which would mean there isn't gonna be an MK9 for even longer still.

    Top ten features for switch 2:
    1. IR pointer
    2. Much better Bluetooth-controller signal, maybe just as good as the wii u signal
    3. Driftless joycon
    4. Better/ harsher HD rumble
    5. Analog triggers
    6. Backwards compatibility
    7. Bought Backwards upgrade though eshop
    8. So much more storage space/ base oled display
    9. F zero gx/ax remake
    10. All new F Zero
    Garanteed to sell trillions of unit more than the switch

    I feel like the reason they sticking with cartridges is because they might go the way of the ds and gameboy advanced. the last gen cartridges still worked on them. maybe that's why that guy was saying it might affect the sales of the new console because it's going to have to sacrifice some power to do that.
