Yeah, the pandemic brought out a more natural comfortable side to these shows. Once it goes back to pre-pandemic conditions the laughter after joke will seem completely fake and many of the funny charming bits Colbert was able to do at home (including the *physical* gags) he'll have to return to the imaginary props. I get that there's the frustration of being unable to see your audience or talk to your guests in person, believe me but these one-on-one, in-home sessions made Colbert's jokes truly genuine and therefore more funny.

He loves his crew obviously, but this Covid format has been harder on him than any of the late night hosts because of how much chemistry he has with a LIVE AUDIENCE. I think it's because his background was improv, not standup. Comedians who spent their early careers in sad little venues learned how to survive dying, ha. They know how to shake off the feeling of not having a joke laughed at. But Stephen being a deliverer of scripted monologue jokes didn't start until after he was already famous from the Daily Show, and a big studio audience guarantees positive affirmation. So Covid quarantine threw the standup experience into reverse for him, going from hundreds of people scream-laughing to the first-year experience of a standup newbie, just a couple people chuckling here and there, and he doesn't have the callouses to deal with it.
I miss Our Cartoon President and want Colbert to renew it for a 4th Season! The guy who voiced Trump also voices Biden, and it's not like the government is less of a cartoon with just a different President. I even have a great idea for the Season 4 cover art image: It's Washington Crossing The Delaware with Biden as Washington, Harris as Monroe (the soldier holding the flag behind Washington), and the rest of the people in the boat could be Dr. Jill, Hunter, Doug (Kamala's husband), Pelosi, Schumer, A.O.C., Sanders, Buttigeig, Yellen, Fauci, and Psaki.
Yeah, the return to an audience is going to suck. Ha. Such an outdated format for what's basically an internet show now. Was crossing my fingers they'd announce a big change but guess the audience and fake applause is a little too engrained haha.
The informal style of these quarantine episodes have made me appreciate Stephen even more, and tonight's "bit" where he vented his frustrations over Chris' marker was both hilarious and deeply human. Just clear out the rest of the basement, thrown in another chair or two and a small bandstand for the musical acts that could all do stripped-down acoustic versions of their hits. Done!
My favorite part of this format is actually the muffled laughter from his staff. I find it really really funny and refreshing rather than the laugh from the audience that sometimes sounds like a laugh track.

Man, I hope Stephen can find a way to keep this format in the theatre! A Late Show has shown so much more of Stephen on a personal level, and I love, love, LOVE having Evie there with him 💙
I miss believing that a heavily-armed "free" society would defend itself against violent domestic terrorists. But, yeah, television shows are important, too.
i have been depressed recently do to some personal stuff but the bit from 11:58 to 13:18 is the first time i have genuinely laughed in a while and i wanted to thank you for it.
True to his words, Stephen's rant at the 11:40 mark made this first of the last three broom closet shows unforgettable. I don't care what they do on stage, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can possibly top that!
Honestly, I don't look forward to ''forced laughter'' etc of a studio audience. It takes away from the natural feeling which made the show a lot better in my opinion.
You've probably never been to a taping but none of the laughter is forced! All 100% genuine, whenever it starts and whenever it stops. Maybe you think there are red "laughter" signs or something? Nope...
I hope the improvisational quips that typifies these "closet shows" follow Colbert back on stage. So much funnier like this. Evie's giggling, and Chris' laugh being audible is pure gold. Watching Stephen dissolve into snickering and bizzare ad hoc rants is amazing.
I "like-like" Stephen's rapid, scrambling sprint to avoid being sucked into the black hole of madness...he's riding right on the edge of that event horizon.
Came here to say exactly this. It's been *years* since I watched late shows, but I've really become a fan of the button-down versions. I hope at least the suits don't make a comeback.
Yup. I'm probably going to drop it like I did with Fallon after he went back to the studio. Not a fan of the one size fits all generic version with the quick rattle through guests etc.
Same here. Watched him a few times before. Not as good as others I thought. This has been great! I will try to watch the live audience thing, but it will never have this touch.
I’m an atheist, but if that “Sea Jesus“ painting is glow in the dark, I would have to consider it. If I lived in Hawaii. And if I weren’t already vaccinated. It’s just so ‘70’s, dude!
Stephen's clearly going bonkers after more than a year in the closet and saving the sanity of Americans everywhere @ 11:10 - 13:30. Gonna miss the wackiness of Closet Colbert! 🥳
Saving the sanity of Americans everywhere? The man convinced you that one of the most peaceful and prosperous periods in American history was akin to Nazi Germany. Guess what. The reason that Trump's involvement wasn't included in a largely peaceful attempt to have voices heard in the Capitol after for the most part Capitol police let the people into the building was because there was no grand conspiracy and certainly no conspiracy directed from Trump. In fact, it is looking more and more like FBI operatives were very deeply involved in infiltrating the supposed insurrectionist 'groups' made up a a few 60 year olds to the point that the infiltrators of the organizations were very possibly the leaders and planners. And why would they decide to have inadequate security while attempting to make it appear that unarmed protesters were supposedly staging an insurrection meant to overthrow the government? Because Congress was on the verge of spending a minimum of six hours arguing why a ten day pause should take place prior to certification in order to have a forensic audit of the 2020 election before certification. it is pathetically sad to see how horribly the left has worked to try to demonize half the nation. Guess what. Those people are your neighbors and your co-workers. They attend your churches and volunteer at your children's schools. How has this nation gotten to this point? Answer. It's obvious when you take even a few steps back to recognize the hatred coming from people like Colbert.
Few things in the last month have made me laugh harder than Stephen losing it about being stuck in a studio closet, right before he returns to the theater.

ditto.. this format has really grown on me
I'm going to miss the sound of Evie's laugh when Stephen truly hits his mark. No live audience can replace her.
Man, I hope Stephen can find a way to keep this format in the theatre! A Late Show has shown so much more of Stephen on a personal level, and I love, love, LOVE having Evie there with him 💙
I'm going to miss the intimacy of the pandemic episodes.
I miss believing that a heavily-armed "free" society would defend itself against violent domestic terrorists.
But, yeah, television shows are important, too.
Well, if the world is going back to "normal" the next pandemic is right around the corner. And this one is not over.
@@Marijuanifornia bro just post your own comment if you want the traction. Why do people feel the need to try and undermine others platform
Facts
i have been depressed recently do to some personal stuff but the bit from 11:58 to 13:18 is the first time i have genuinely laughed in a while and i wanted to thank you for it.
That Scarborough Fair parody was legit so good
True to his words, Stephen's rant at the 11:40 mark made this first of the last three broom closet shows unforgettable. I don't care what they do on stage, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can possibly top that!
Honestly, I don't look forward to ''forced laughter'' etc of a studio audience. It takes away from the natural feeling which made the show a lot better in my opinion.
💯
You've probably never been to a taping but none of the laughter is forced! All 100% genuine, whenever it starts and whenever it stops. Maybe you think there are red "laughter" signs or something? Nope...
@@mjbaldwin they "sweeten" it when needed.
they ALL do.
the FULL truth is never pretty.
@@dumpygoodness4086 have you been to a taping?
How can any live show compete with a producer yelling “gourd, gourd!”? 😂
Can we please continue to hear Evie’s laughter played in the Theatre once the show returns there on Monday? She’s a Star in her own right… right. 😃😍
I hope the improvisational quips that typifies these "closet shows" follow Colbert back on stage. So much funnier like this. Evie's giggling, and Chris' laugh being audible is pure gold. Watching Stephen dissolve into snickering and bizzare ad hoc rants is amazing.
Space Italians?
That’s a spacey-a meatball.
The Space Italian legacy was well documented in the popular blockbuster, Super Mario Galaxy.
Space Italians? Don't you mean... "specimen"?.......sorry...I'll...see myself out.
This is one of my favourite chain of comments in the last year 😃🍝
Well done everyone 😂
Man, your effects department! We NEED a full version of that song. Seriously I think it could win a Grammy in one category or another.
Whoever hollered “Gourd, Gourd!” Bravo! Inspired! Thank you.
How do we spend trillions of dollars on "national defense", but our government's main building gets overrun by our dumbest people in 2 hours?
Because the former commander in chief and his GOP minions wanted it to happen. That’s why it’s called an insurrection.
murica.
It's National (interest for our glorious oil industries abroad) Defense
They're white and America is racist.
it was an inside job.
Please keep Evie involved somehow? She’s what I’m going to miss most.
I’m really gonna miss hearing Evie’s laugh.
Me too yo. It’s like my favorite part of the show. It’s delightful.
Could we please keep Evie? Please.
Not gonna miss the many varieties of the same comment about her though.
Anyone else gonna miss his production crew laughing in the background?
Me too
Damn! I’m going to miss Evy laughing in the background!
Always makes me smile.....
They're likely still going to, it'll be drowned out by the audience, though.
@@krejados1 A lot of the show ends up drowned out by the audience. This is much better for hearing everything.
Gonna miss this format. Love the informality and Evie.
Space Italians sounds like the greatest B movie never made.
Facts!
“Until someone cracks the window of Justice...” absolutely brilliant
I will miss Stephen's interaction's with his staff in the office during the monologue. Especially, I'll miss Evie.

I "like-like" Stephen's rapid, scrambling sprint to avoid being sucked into the black hole of madness...he's riding right on the edge of that event horizon.
“A young hip bae like you fam” 😂😂😂🥴
What is that language you speak? Cusana fy nhin! 😄
“Smash it”
Thank you for not editing out Stephen's rant about his crew
I'm really going to miss this relaxed, totally "unprofessional", version of this show
I might not watch anymore. The sound of an audience gives me anxiety lol.
Came here to say exactly this. It's been *years* since I watched late shows, but I've really become a fan of the button-down versions. I hope at least the suits don't make a comeback.
Me too! I prefer the intimate set up they have now
Yup. I'm probably going to drop it like I did with Fallon after he went back to the studio. Not a fan of the one size fits all generic version with the quick rattle through guests etc.
Maybe they could keep up one a week...do a Friday show or something. They are truly gold.
I’m really going to miss Evie and the crew giggling in the background.
Space Italians: “that’s a spicy meteor!“
Gold.
We will reach the edges of the galaxy thanks to advancements in gabagool technology
Underrated comment! 👌🏻
Intastella Mozarella!!!
Between Donnie's pants and Rudy's constant leaks, 'Depends' is getting a lot of free advertising!

I will not miss the pandemic but I am definitely going to miss the interaction between him and the crew.
I am going to miss that so much.
I love how they have a different animation and song every night for The Vax-scene
And the fact that they are obnoxiously long! 😂
Anybody know the real song? It's bugging the hell out of me.

@@janekathy1 Thanks.
@@janekathy1 thank you so much. I scouted across the comment section to find this information.
U know a late night host is outstanding when they're funny without a pandering audience. Colbert has been brilliant the last year.
I think I prefer this format. it feels more personal.
The real reason the GOP doesn't want a commission is because just about all sitting members would be pleading the 5th by the end of the day
11:35 to 13:15 is priceless beyond measure. Thank you for being you, Stephen!
I want a bumper sticker and a t-shirt that says that -- "America doesn't have to smell like this."
I’m gonna miss this, especially the long graphics.
You people are owned by that little box you watch every night.
None of us watch this on a little box. Literally none of the people seeing this comment.
@@ricachero lol I know right? I find that comment extra weird considering the person also watched the same video we did
Precious jewel?? Yes, you are Steven! Don't let those "Television professionals" tell you any different!
"This is a bit!" says every drunk uncle at the dinner table.
hes right they truly are gems, only really watched the show this past year
Same here. Watched him a few times before. Not as good as others I thought. This has been great! I will try to watch the live audience thing, but it will never have this touch.
I’m an atheist, but if that “Sea Jesus“ painting is glow in the dark, I would have to consider it.

Short-Timer Stephen is pretty great.
That marker sniff was a power move if I ever saw one.
I'm going to miss this format. Evie is going to be missed so much. Please have her as your first guest.
I will miss the closet late show! The Chris sharpie tangent was HILARIOUS!
