    Tonalist paintings involving snow, to me, completes that Tonalistic aura ... it's akin to eating the perfect bowl of spaghetti, you are just tucking in and Aunt Agnes walks into the room with some fresh parmesan cheese... boom! it's the icing on the Tonalist cake

      Hi Jigger, Check out this guy if you like snow, more of a post Tonalist but an amazing painter: www.pinterest.nz/gaitandrvet/john-f-carlson/ He has a very good book on painting thats quite old now but considered one of the best written: www.amazon.com/Carlsons-Guide-Landscape-Painting-Carlson/dp/0486229270/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=carlson+painter&qid=1574200789&sr=8-1 Cheers :-)

      @@MFrancis Hey, Mike, thanks for this...I just ordered it!

      You will love it, too bad much of it is in black & white as it's from back in the day... Still acknowledged widely as one of the best landscape painting books...

    These are wonderful learning tools and am subscribed, but could I make a suggestion to make them enormously popular?
    Speak of color mixes; techniques; scumbling; glazes etc. Thanks for the great videos!

    Sir what do you mix with your paints to make them workable, and what brush are you using here?. Thanks

    • @MFrancis
      @MFrancis  3 года назад

      Hi Scoot, I use Archival Brand odurless lean medium. Re the brush. it's most likely a robert simmons signet series flat.

    You spoke about doing , or did, a painting that was large and with the color palette of blues, grays, greens, I would love to see it, do you have it up here on your site?

      Hi Debbie, doubtful as this video is several years old now. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂

    Can you sell a “study” on someone’s painting? If labelled as such?

    • @MFrancis
      @MFrancis  3 года назад

      Hi Rick, you can if it's a long dead artist like good ol' Hugh here. I would not recommend creating and attempting to sell studies made after a living artist. Could end up in a law suit. Cheers 😊

    No cast shadow for the big tree?

    • @MFrancis
      @MFrancis  6 лет назад

      Hi Ralph, well its a study after Hugh Bolton Jones' painting but I'm guessing it was dawn or twilight. You don't really get those cast shadows at those times of the day. Cheers :-)

    • @ralphhancock7449
      @ralphhancock7449 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, I was wondering about the fact that it was a study that duplicated someone else's work, but since it was entitled "winter sunset.." it seemed that there should be some indication of a cast shadow. Other than that, nice work! I've always enjoyed tonalist paintings.

    Love the painting, but your lighting in your studio was very distracting. It keeps flashing and your wonderful painting is difficult to see.

    • @MFrancis
      @MFrancis  6 лет назад

      Hi Gail, the light changes you see are from clouds passing over the roof of my studio. There's a skylight there. No doubt the flashing effect is from this combined with the sped up video. Cheers 😊

    • @MFrancis
      @MFrancis  6 лет назад

      Thanks Gail, What your seeing is changes in t5he overall lighting in my studio caused by clouds passing above the skylight that's on my roof. Cheers :-)
