  • 1. Stay in your vehicle.
    2. Call 911, then APS at 602-371-7171.
    3. Warn others to stay away.
    4. Wait for rescue workers to arrive.
    5. If you must get out of the car because of a life-threatening situation, jump out of the vehicle without touching both the vehicle and the ground at the same time, then move away using short, shuffle steps.

That is an excellent question. Hopefully, you never have this experience; however, the video is correct. You are okay to make contact with your vehicle, but you do not want to have contact with your vehicle and the ground at the same time. Doing so will complete the electrical connection, resulting in injury or worse. It's best to remain inside your car until otherwise instructed, if it is safe to do so. Stay safe!

Is it safe to touch the metal parts of the car as you are opening the door, as in the video? I thought it wasn’t…

but could you just drive your car away from the power line?

Hi Matthew. It is possible to drive away, but that is not recommended because it may cause the wire to become entangled with the vehicle and endanger other people in the area.
It’s better to stay in the vehicle if it’s safe to do so and wait for First Responders and APS
      .
